A galaxy can exist, grow and form stars without a central supermassive black hole. Its stars, gas, dust and dark matter remain bound by gravity; nothing has to replace the black hole at the center. The main difference is that the galaxy loses one possible source of energetic feedback: an accreting black hole cannot launch jets or outflows to heat or expel gas.
That absence does not produce one universal outcome. In some massive galaxies, especially those at the centers of galaxy clusters, less black-hole heating could let more gas cool and make stars. In a small, isolated galaxy, gas supply, stellar activity and interactions may matter far more than a missing black hole.

A black hole is not required for a galaxy to exist
A galaxy is a gravitationally bound system of stars, gas, dust and dark matter. Its structure is maintained by the combined gravity of all those components, not by a single object in the nucleus. A central supermassive black hole can be an important component, but it is not the foundation that holds the galaxy together.

“Central” also does not mean that the exact middle must contain a compact object. Stars, stellar remnants, gas and dark matter can occupy a galactic nucleus. If a galaxy has no central supermassive black hole, it does not need a neutron star or another replacement object to qualify as a galaxy. The center is a region defined by the distribution of matter and the galaxy’s gravitational potential, not a hole that must be filled.

How common are central black holes?
Evidence indicates a strong difference between small and massive galaxies, although detecting a black hole is difficult when it is not actively feeding. A 2025 NASA summary of a Chandra X-ray analysis used observations of more than 1,600 galaxies collected over more than two decades.
| Galaxy group | Finding reported in the NASA summary | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Dwarf galaxies | About 30% likely contain supermassive black holes | Many dwarf galaxies may lack a central supermassive black hole, but the percentage is an estimate rather than a census of every dwarf galaxy. |
| Massive galaxies, including Milky-Way-mass systems | More than 90% show evidence for a central supermassive black hole | Central black holes are common in this mass range, although a particular galaxy can still be quiet or difficult to detect. |
| Galaxies below about three billion solar masses | Usually lacked bright central X-ray sources in the study | A faint or absent X-ray source can indicate weak accretion, a smaller black hole, or no black hole; it is not by itself definitive proof of absence. |
The analysis accounted for the possibility that a small black hole would simply be too faint for Chandra to see because it accretes little gas. The researchers concluded that the shortage of bright central sources was larger than faint accretion alone predicted, which is consistent with a real deficit of black holes in many low-mass galaxies. The result should still be stated as “likely”: an X-ray non-detection cannot identify every individual galaxy that has no black hole.
What disappears when the central black hole is absent?
No accretion-powered active nucleus
A black hole that is not present cannot accrete gas, form a luminous accretion disk or produce an active galactic nucleus powered by that engine. The galaxy may still contain bright stars, supernova remnants, star-forming regions or other sources of radiation, but it lacks this particular central power source.

No jets or black-hole-driven outflows
Growing black holes can channel some of the energy released by infalling matter into narrow jets and broader outflows. If there is no central black hole, those jets and outflows cannot occur. This removes a possible way to move energy and momentum from the nucleus into surrounding gas.
No black-hole feedback loop
In a feedback loop, gas cools, some of it falls toward the center, and accretion onto the black hole powers jets. Those jets push into nearby gas and reheat it, reducing the amount that can cool again. Without the black hole, that loop is unavailable. The consequence depends on whether the surrounding gas would otherwise cool efficiently and whether another process can heat or remove it.
What does not disappear?
The galaxy’s gravity and structure
Removing a central black hole does not remove the stars, dark matter or gas that make up the galaxy. A supermassive black hole is extremely massive by human standards, but the large-scale orbit of a star is governed by the total mass spread throughout the galaxy. Stars do not automatically fall into the center, and the galaxy does not dissolve simply because its nucleus lacks a black hole.

Star formation and gas flows
Stars can continue to form from cold, dense gas. The rate depends on how much gas enters the galaxy, how efficiently it cools, how stellar winds and supernovae return energy to the interstellar medium, and whether interactions or mergers disturb the gas. None of those mechanisms requires a central black hole.

Stellar processes can heat or expel gas, while galaxy interactions can compress gas and trigger bursts of star formation or strip gas away. Gas arriving from the surrounding environment can replenish the reservoir, and environmental pressure can alter a galaxy’s supply. These channels can dominate in systems where black-hole feedback is weak or absent.
The outcome depends on the galaxy’s environment
| Setting | Likely role of a missing black hole | Important qualifiers |
|---|---|---|
| Low-mass or dwarf galaxy | The missing black hole may have little immediate effect if the galaxy has little central gas to accrete. Star formation can be governed mainly by stellar feedback and its external gas supply. | Some dwarfs may contain small or inactive black holes that current observations cannot easily reveal. |
| Milky-Way-mass galaxy | A central black hole is statistically common, but if one were absent, the disk, halo and ordinary star-formation processes could still operate. | The exact history would depend on mergers, gas inflow and stellar feedback; no fixed increase or decrease in star formation follows. |
| Massive galaxy at a cluster center | Removing the black hole removes a feedback channel that can reheat cooling gas. More gas could remain cold and available for star formation. | This is a specific environment in which the feedback cycle is observed and discussed, not a rule for every galaxy. |
NASA’s Chandra reporting describes the cluster-center case this way: hot gas can cool into clouds; some clouds form stars, while some reach the black hole and trigger jets that push against and reheat the gas. MIT researcher Michael McDonald summarized the implication as: “Without these black holes and their jets, the central galaxies of galaxy clusters would have many more stars than they do today.” That statement applies to central cluster galaxies, where the hot-gas reservoir and cooling cycle are especially important.

More cooling does not guarantee more stars
If black-hole heating is absent, the first physical change would be the loss of that heating and gas-displacement mechanism. It does not follow that every parcel of gas would turn into stars. Gas must reach sufficiently high density, and it can be heated or expelled by supernovae, stellar winds, radiation and galaxy-scale motions.
A galaxy can also be starved. If its surroundings supply little fresh gas, removing black-hole feedback does not create a new fuel reservoir. Conversely, a gas-rich galaxy may experience more cooling and a higher star-formation rate for a time, but mergers, turbulence or stellar feedback can still interrupt that activity. The direction and size of the change are therefore model- and environment-dependent rather than a single predictable number.

“No black hole” is different from “no detected black hole”
Observations usually constrain activity, not existence directly. An accreting black hole can emit X-rays, but a black hole that is inactive, starved of gas or very small may be too faint to detect. The Chandra study’s low-mass-galaxy result is important because the researchers modeled the expected faintness and still found fewer sources than that explanation alone predicted. Even so, the two statements remain distinct.
Best Value
| Observation or condition | What can safely be concluded |
|---|---|
| Bright, compact central X-ray source | Strong evidence for an actively accreting central black hole or another energetic nuclear source that requires further classification. |
| No bright central X-ray source | The nucleus is not bright in that observation; it may contain no black hole, or a black hole that is too faint or inactive to detect. |
| Statistical deficit across many low-mass galaxies | Evidence that black holes are genuinely less prevalent in that population than in massive galaxies, while individual cases remain uncertain. |
Why the black-hole and galaxy connection remains unsettled
Massive galaxies and their central black holes show strong correlations, including links between the black-hole mass and properties of the host galaxy. Those correlations do not by themselves prove that the black hole controls every stage of galaxy growth. A black hole and its host may respond to the same gas supply, mergers and gravitational history, or influence one another through feedback.
A Nature review has described the broader hypothesis that even a small fraction of the energy released by a growing black hole, if absorbed by the host, could heat or eject ambient gas and halt star formation. How much this mechanism explains the low star-formation rates of large elliptical galaxies remains an open quantitative question. NASA has likewise noted that the relationship between massive black-hole growth and galaxy growth is strongly correlated but not yet described in complete numerical detail.
Questions astronomers are still testing
- How often do black holes form in dwarf galaxies, and what initial conditions determine whether they do?
- How many quiet black holes remain hidden because they are accreting too slowly to produce detectable X-rays?
- At what galaxy mass does black-hole feedback become an important regulator compared with stellar feedback?
- How efficiently do jets couple their energy to hot halo gas, cold clouds and the wider galaxy?
- When a galaxy lacks a black hole, does its long-term star-formation history differ measurably, or do other processes erase the distinction?
Answering these questions requires combining X-ray observations with optical, infrared and radio measurements, plus models of gas inflow, star formation and feedback. A prevalence estimate from one wavelength is not the same as a complete inventory of every central black hole.

The practical answer to the counterfactual
A galaxy without a central supermassive black hole would still be a galaxy. Its stars would orbit in the gravitational field of its stars, gas and dark matter; gas could still flow in and form stars; and mergers or stellar activity could still reshape it. What it would lack is the feedback channel supplied by an accreting central black hole: no black-hole-powered jets, no corresponding outflows and no jet-driven reheating cycle.
In a massive cluster-center galaxy, that missing channel could allow more gas to cool and produce more stars than it otherwise would. In a dwarf or relatively isolated galaxy, the difference could be small because other processes control the gas. Current observations support the existence of many black-hole-free or black-hole-poor low-mass galaxies, but they do not justify one guaranteed fate for every galaxy without a central black hole.
