There is no standard shutdown plan: saved accounts and progress may be lost or may transfer only through a specific process. The publisher’s official notice is the only reliable guide to what will happen to a particular game.
What “end of service” can mean
Publishers use end-of-service announcements for different outcomes. Some terminate the game entirely; others release an offline version or preserve selected content in a viewer. Those options are not interchangeable: an archive may let you revisit story scenes without letting you play the original RPG.

- Full termination: The app or its online functions may no longer be usable.
- Offline conversion: Some gameplay may continue without the original servers, but events, online features, or other systems may be removed.
- Limited archive: A theater, story viewer, or gallery may preserve selected content without the full game.
Do not assume a shutdown means either that everything disappears or that the whole game will remain playable. The announced plan determines what is supported.
Will you still be able to play?
Possibly, but “play” can mean anything from continuing a reduced offline version to viewing scenes in an archive. For example, Square Enix said KINGDOM HEARTS Union χ Dark Road would be playable offline, while KINGDOM HEARTS Union χ would remain available as a theater mode. Even an offline version may differ from the live game. Check whether the publisher says it retains the main story, events, characters, battles, or other features you care about, and which functions depend on the servers and will be removed.
What happens to your account, characters, and purchases?
Account data does not automatically carry over. Aniplex said data from before service ended for Alterna Vvelt: Blue Exorcist Another Story would not transfer to its offline version. Read the notice for each category of data separately. It may distinguish account details, progress, characters, purchased items, and save data; a statement that “some data” transfers does not mean everything does. If a transfer is offered, check what must be done before service ends and whether it has a deadline.
Can reinstalling the app or changing phones affect access?
Yes. An installed app, an account, or a previous download is not by itself a guarantee that you can use the game later. Square Enix’s Dark Road notice warned that player data would not transfer if the app was deleted and reinstalled or if the player changed devices. Before deleting the app, replacing a device, or relying on a future reinstall, check the game’s own instructions. Availability through an app store and the ability to restore data are separate questions.
What a shutdown plan can specify
Shutdown announcements can spell out different combinations of playability, data, content, access requirements, and timing. A useful contrast is SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada, an online game rather than a gacha RPG. In an announcement dated September 26, 2026, Bandai Namco said online service was scheduled to end after May 2027 and that an offline-exclusive version was planned. The announcement described transfer of some saved data and certain purchased items, while noting that some online-dependent functions would be removed. The FAQ also says the physical package can be played by applying offline-version update data with the applicable game disc. That is a specific access condition for this game, not evidence that a physical copy will preserve a different title after its servers close.
What to check in the official notice
- Dates and region: Find the final service date and confirm the notice applies to your region. Look for separate deadlines for purchases, data transfer, or app availability.
- Post-shutdown access: Identify whether the publisher promises an offline game, a story or theater viewer, a gallery, or no continuing app.
- Exactly what transfers: Check whether the notice covers the account, progress, characters, purchased items, or only selected save data. Note whether you must initiate a transfer before service ends.
- Device and reinstall conditions: Look for restrictions on changing phones, deleting the app, or reinstalling it later.
- What content remains: Check whether the main story, events, battles, characters, and online-dependent features are included or removed.
- How to access the offline version: Note any required update, app, disc, or other condition, and distinguish a scheduled release from one that has already happened.
Rely on the publisher’s stated plan for supported access. A third-party server or unofficial workaround is not a universal guarantee of continued play.
