The result is controlled by the contract’s renewal, extension, notice, termination, default and payment clauses, together with the site’s utility, interconnection and generation arrangements.
To determine the outcome for a real facility, identify the agreement’s exact end date, check whether renewal is automatic or requires consent, confirm notice deadlines, and map the supply arrangement that would operate if the current deal is not renewed.

The four outcomes an expiry date can produce
An “end date” can describe several legally and operationally different events. The date itself is not enough to tell you whether the facility will keep receiving power.
Automatic renewal
Some agreements continue unless one party sends a timely non-renewal notice. A September 2026 U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing describing a Luminant power-purchase agreement provides one example: the initial term is 20 years from first delivery, followed by successive one-year renewals unless either party gives written notice of non-renewal. The same filing discusses default, termination and force-majeure remedies.

That structure is a contract example, not an industry rule. The notice method, recipient, deadline and renewal length must be read from the agreement itself. Missing the deadline can leave a party committed for another period even if it intended to exit.
Optional extension
An agreement may give one or both parties an option to extend, with a specified notice period or pricing process. In a 2026 disclosure of the DTE–Google arrangement, service for a planned 1.0-gigawatt data-center load is described through December 2047, with options to extend. The disclosure also refers to minimum monthly charges and possible early-termination fees; it does not say that an extension is automatic.
An option is different from a renewal obligation. The holder may have to exercise it in a defined window, satisfy conditions or accept a revised price. If the option is not exercised correctly, the original service term may end even though the parties expected the project to continue.

Non-renewal and replacement supply
If a party gives valid non-renewal notice, the existing agreement normally runs until its final day, then the parties must rely on another documented supply path. That could be ordinary utility service, a new power-purchase agreement, a generation-backed arrangement, or a combination of contracts.
Non-renewal does not by itself prove that the data center will lose power. It also does not prove that replacement power is ready. The project must have the physical capacity, interconnection rights, transmission or distribution service, metering and commercial arrangements needed for the alternative.
Termination, default or force majeure before the scheduled end
Many agreements permit early termination for defined defaults, prolonged force majeure, insolvency or other specified events. Remedies can include cure periods, damages, security draws, replacement-power costs or negotiated termination payments. An expiry analysis that considers only the calendar end date can miss a much earlier termination right or a surviving payment obligation.
Why a PPA is not the same as utility service
“Power-supply agreement” is a broad phrase. A power-purchase agreement (PPA) may set the commercial terms for energy or capacity from a generating project, while a utility-service agreement governs delivery through a regulated network. A data center may also have a separate interconnection agreement, transmission or distribution service, and backup-generation arrangements.
Utility-delivered electricity
Under a utility arrangement, the customer receives service through the utility’s network under a tariff or special contract. Ending a separate PPA may change who supplies energy or how it is priced without ending the utility’s obligation to serve, subject to the tariff, credit requirements and applicable law. Conversely, ending a utility special contract can affect the physical delivery arrangement even when a PPA remains in place.

Generation-backed or directly connected supply
Some projects are tied to a specific generating source. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2024 description of an AWS–Talen nuclear agreement discusses 960 megawatts of capacity and notes that a directly connected facility can receive electricity from a plant rather than through the wider transmission network. That example shows a possible delivery configuration; it does not establish what happens when any unnamed project’s agreement expires.
A directly connected data center may need a new generation contract, a grid connection, or both if the original arrangement ends. Switching paths can require engineering work, interconnection studies, protection changes, transmission rights and regulatory approvals.
Renewable-energy PPAs
RWE Supply & Trading announced in 2025 a PPA to supply renewable electricity to Telehouse’s London campus through the end of 2035, a stated 10-year term. The announcement illustrates a finite energy contract, not a guarantee that physical electrons to the campus stop at the end of that term. The site’s utility and grid arrangements would determine physical continuity, while a replacement contract could determine the commercial source and environmental attributes.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat the project team should check first
- Collect every linked document. Review the PPA, utility or special-service agreement, interconnection agreement, transmission or distribution service, leases involving generation equipment, guarantees, credit-support instruments and amendments. Definitions in one document may incorporate obligations from another.
- Write down the operative dates. Separate the signature date, commercial-operation date, first-delivery date, scheduled expiration date, option windows, notice deadlines and any milestone that starts a renewal period. The Luminant example measures its initial 20-year term from first delivery, not from signature.
- Map the notice mechanics. Confirm who may give notice, the required form, delivery address, lead time, business-day convention and whether notice is irrevocable. Calendar the deadline with a substantial buffer for internal approvals.
- Classify the right after expiry. Determine whether the clause creates automatic renewal, an extension option, a mutual-negotiation process, month-to-month continuation, a holdover rate or no continuation at all.
- Test the physical supply path. Ask the utility, generator and transmission providers what would serve the site on the following day. Confirm available capacity, interconnection status, metering, scheduling, balancing responsibility and outage procedures rather than relying on a commercial promise alone.
- Price the exit. Identify minimum bills, demand charges, termination payments, liquidated damages, replacement-energy costs, security requirements and obligations that survive termination. Model both an orderly non-renewal and an early default.
- Obtain jurisdiction-specific advice. The governing law, utility commission rules, market design and project permits can change the practical result. A contract review should be paired with advice from counsel and the relevant utility or regulator.
Financial exposure can continue after the supply relationship ends
Large-load contracts often protect the provider against building or reserving infrastructure for a customer that later leaves. The protection may appear as minimum monthly charges, an early-termination fee, collateral or a requirement to pay for a defined period.
Minimum monthly charges
The Michigan Public Service Commission’s 2026 page describing the DTE–Google special-contract case reports a termination-payment structure under which Google ultimately pays at least 15 years of minimum monthly charges. That is a case-specific regulatory description, not a standard charge for data centers. It demonstrates why a project can stop taking power yet still owe substantial contractual payments.
Notice periods and security
Tucson Electric Power’s project description for a planned Tucson-area data center refers to multi-year notice, a termination fee supported by financial security and minimum monthly bills. The details apply to that project. In any other agreement, the notice period, security amount and fee must be confirmed from the executed documents.
TEP President and CEO Susan Gray said, “This agreement will allow us to satisfy our obligation to serve this new customer without compromising reliable, affordable service for the rest of our community.” The statement describes TEP’s arrangement for that planned project; it is not an independent finding about all utility contracts.
Costs that survive the end date
Check for obligations that continue after expiration, including unpaid invoices, reconciliation of energy or capacity, renewable-energy certificates, confidentiality, indemnities, equipment removal, restoration, taxes, audit rights and dispute procedures. A contract can end for future deliveries while those clauses remain enforceable.

Why large-load departures can affect other customers
A data center’s demand can influence a utility’s generation, transmission and distribution investments. In a concurrence concerning a ComEd–Aligned transmission-security agreement, a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission commissioner discussed transmission commitments and the possibility that other customers could face increased costs if the large-load customer ends service after ten years.
That discussion is the commissioner’s case-specific analysis, not a settled prediction for every utility or project. Whether costs shift depends on approved rates, cost-allocation rules, asset-use assumptions, credit support and the terms of the particular agreement. A project team should therefore examine both its own exit bill and any regulatory process concerning stranded or shared infrastructure.
How to compare renewal with replacement options
Do not rank a renewal, utility service or generation-backed alternative without project-specific documents. Use the same questions for each documented option:

Common failure modes and how to avoid them
Assuming the end date means an immediate blackout
A contract expiry may change the commercial source while utility service continues. Verify the physical delivery documents before communicating a shutdown risk.
Assuming continuity is guaranteed
Automatic renewal may require timely notice, and an extension option may expire unused. Obtain written confirmation of the operative term instead of relying on an informal statement from a counterparty.
Confusing energy ownership with delivery rights
A PPA can cover energy, capacity or environmental attributes without granting the transmission, distribution or interconnection rights needed to deliver electricity to the campus. Review those rights separately.
Ignoring construction and approval lead times
A replacement contract signed shortly before expiry may not help if a substation, line, protection system or interconnection study is unfinished. Build a schedule backward from the last dependable day of the current arrangement.

A practical decision timeline
More than two years before expiry
- Inventory contracts, options, notice periods and surviving obligations.
- Ask the utility and any generator for written confirmation of capacity and delivery rights after the current term.
- Begin interconnection, permitting and procurement work for any replacement path.
One to two years before expiry
- Obtain firm pricing and credit terms for renewal and alternatives.
- Complete engineering studies, regulatory filings and security planning.
- Decide whether to exercise an extension option or issue non-renewal notice, subject to the contract’s exact deadline.
During the final year
- Execute replacement agreements and confirm effective dates.
- Test metering, scheduling, communications, protection and backup systems.
- Reconcile deposits, minimum bills, renewable attributes and equipment responsibilities.
At transition
- Verify the new supplier or utility has accepted the account and delivery schedule.
- Record meter readings, settlement data and security releases.
- Keep emergency operating procedures aligned with the new supply configuration.
The answer for an unnamed project
Without the project’s contracts, location, utility, generation source, expiry date and governing law, no responsible answer can say that power will stop or that operations will continue unchanged. The defensible conclusion is conditional: the agreement may renew, be extended, end with replacement supply, or trigger termination and payment obligations. The controlling documents and the site’s physical delivery arrangements determine which result applies.
