When a cryptocurrency moves faster than your order can be matched, the price you expected and the price you receive can differ. A market order may fill across several order-book levels, while a limit order can remain unfilled or execute only partly. A stop order can trigger without guaranteeing a fill at its trigger price. The outcome depends on order type, order size, available liquidity, processing time, and the rules of the trading venue.
What “slippage” means in a fast crypto market
Slippage is the difference between an order’s expected price and its actual execution price. Coinbase defines it this way in its help guidance. The difference can be unfavorable, but it can also be favorable if the market moves in your direction before the order completes.

The price shown on a trading screen is usually a snapshot: it may be the last traded price, the best bid, the best ask, or an estimate based on current orders. It is not automatically a promise that your entire order will execute at that number. Between clicking Buy or Sell and the venue matching the order, other traders can remove liquidity, add new orders, or trade through the displayed level.

How a market order gets a different price
The order book determines the fill
A market order tells the venue to seek immediate execution at the best available prices. It does not set a maximum purchase price or a minimum sale price. For a buy, the matching engine takes available sell orders from the lowest asking price upward. For a sell, it takes available buy orders from the highest bid downward.

If your order is larger than the quantity available at the best price, the unmatched portion moves to the next price level. The result is one order with several fills and a weighted-average execution price. Coinbase’s trading rules explicitly note that market orders can execute at multiple prices and can be significantly away from the most recent trade, depending on order size and available quantities.
A numerical example
Assume a coin shows a best ask of $100, but only 0.4 coin is offered there. The next asks are 0.8 coin at $100.50 and 1 coin at $101. Your 1.2-coin market buy would take 0.4 coin at $100 and 0.8 coin at $100.50, producing an average near $100.33 before fees. The last-traded price could still display $100 while your order is filling above it.
During a sudden rally, those levels can disappear before the matching engine reaches them. A new best ask might be higher by the time the remaining quantity is processed. A fast decline creates the mirror image for a market sell: bids can be consumed rapidly, leaving later portions of the order at lower prices.
Why order size matters
A small order may fit entirely at the best available level. A larger order reaches deeper into the book and has more exposure to changing prices. “Deep liquidity” does not mean that every displayed order will remain available; it means there is comparatively more quantity near the current price at that moment. Liquidity can thin abruptly around news, liquidations, market openings, or a surge in one-sided trading.
What a limit order changes—and what it cannot change
A limit order sets the worst price you are willing to accept. A buy limit can execute only at its limit price or lower; a sell limit can execute only at its limit price or higher. This price boundary prevents the order from drifting through the book like an unrestricted market order.

The trade-off is execution certainty. If the market moves away before a matching counter-order appears, the order can wait indefinitely or expire according to the venue’s time-in-force setting. If only part of the requested quantity is available at acceptable prices, the order can receive a partial fill and leave the remainder open or unfilled. Coinbase’s order-management guidance describes this distinction between price control and guaranteed execution.
Fast-move scenarios for a limit order
- Price runs through your buy limit: the market rises above your limit, so no further buys occur.
- Price touches your limit briefly: your order may fill only partly because earlier orders at the same price have priority or because available quantity is small.
- Price gaps over your limit: the order remains inactive at that price rather than chasing the market.
A limit order therefore controls price, not the probability or timing of a fill. Whether that is preferable depends on whether avoiding an unexpected price is more important than entering or exiting immediately.

| Order choice | What it controls | What can happen during a rapid move | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market order | Requests immediate execution against available liquidity | Fills can span several price levels and the final average can differ from the displayed price | High immediacy, low price certainty |
| Limit order | Sets the highest buy price or lowest sell price you will accept | May remain open, miss the move, or fill only partly | Price boundary, but no guaranteed execution |
| Stop order | Activates when a trigger condition is reached | After triggering, the resulting order can encounter the same liquidity and price movement as other orders | Useful for conditional action, but the trigger is not a guaranteed fill price |
| Stop-limit order | Uses a trigger plus a limit price for the resulting order | Can trigger and then fail to fill if the market moves beyond the limit | More price control, with greater risk of no execution |
There is no universally safest order type. Choose according to the priority in that moment: speed, a maximum acceptable price, a minimum acceptable sale price, or a conditional trigger. Also check how the venue handles partial fills, cancellations, time-in-force, and triggered orders.
Why stops can fill away from the stop price
A stop price is normally a trigger, not a promise that the trade will execute at that number. Once triggered, the venue applies the rules of the resulting order. If that order is marketable and the book has moved, the available execution price can be different.
Coinbase’s U.S. derivatives guidance gives a specific gap example: if the market opens after a closed period beyond the trigger, a stop can execute at the available opening price. The difference between the trigger and that fill is slippage. This example applies to Coinbase’s U.S. derivatives service and should not be treated as a universal rule for every exchange, spot market, or jurisdiction.

With a stop-limit order, the limit condition may prevent an unexpectedly bad price, but it can also leave you without a fill during a sharp gap. A protective order that never executes may not reduce exposure when you expected it to.

Liquidity, volatility and processing time
Liquidity near the price
Slippage is more likely when there is little tradable quantity close to the current price. A market can show a narrow spread while still having shallow depth just beyond the best bid and ask. Large orders, thinly traded tokens, and sudden withdrawals of resting orders can expose that weakness.
One-sided urgency
When many participants try to buy at once, sellers can reprice or cancel offers faster than new supply arrives. In a selloff, buyers can pull bids or move them lower. The order book then changes while your order is waiting to be matched.
Latency and matching sequence
Your click, network transmission, venue risk checks, queue position, and matching all take time. Even a short delay matters when prices are moving quickly. Orders submitted at nearly the same moment are processed according to the venue’s sequencing rules, so two traders seeing the same quote can receive different results.
Fees are separate from slippage
The execution price difference described as slippage is distinct from the trading fee charged by the venue. Your total cost can include both the average fill price and applicable fees, but a low fee does not prevent the order from filling across multiple levels.

Venue protections: warnings, limits and halts
Trading platforms may add safeguards, but their names and effects are not interchangeable. A warning informs you; an order-protection rule can restrict or stop an order; a market halt pauses matching under defined conditions.
Coinbase market-order warning
Coinbase’s trading rules say its interface can display slippage or warn when a market order could fill more than 2% away from the last trade price. That 2% figure is a Coinbase interface rule, not a statistic for typical crypto slippage and not a market-wide threshold. It also refers to the last trade, which may differ from the best bid or ask you are viewing.
Derivatives protection points
Coinbase separately documents market-order protection points for its derivatives product, including treatment of partial fills. The applicable behavior depends on that product’s current rules, your region, and the contract. Do not assume a spot order receives the same protection.
Futures price bands and halts
Coinbase’s U.S. perpetual-style futures market-controls guidance describes defined price bands and a two-minute halt after a fluctuation limit is reached. Those controls belong to that futures product. They do not mean every crypto market pauses after the same percentage move, and they do not guarantee a particular fill when trading resumes.
Recommended Free Tools
Before relying on a safeguard, read the current rules for the exact venue, product, and jurisdiction. Confirm what happens to open orders, triggered stops, partial fills, and unfilled quantities during a warning, protection event, or halt.

How to estimate the likely execution before submitting
- Identify the exact order type. Confirm whether the ticket is market, limit, stop, or stop-limit. A button labeled “Buy now” may still open a configurable order ticket.
- Check the order-book depth. Look at the quantity available on each price level on the side your order will consume. Treat displayed depth as temporary, not guaranteed.
- Reduce the order size if appropriate. A smaller order may stay closer to the best level. Splitting an order can reduce market impact, but it also exposes you to additional price changes and fees.
- Review the venue’s estimate. If the interface shows expected average price, estimated slippage, or a warning, compare it with your maximum acceptable deviation.
- Set a limit boundary when price matters most. Enter the highest acceptable buy price or lowest acceptable sell price, understanding that the order may not complete.
- Check time-in-force and partial-fill behavior. Determine whether the remainder stays open, cancels automatically, or can be canceled manually.
- Verify the contract and region. Spot, margin, and derivatives products can have different triggers, protections, price bands, and trading hours.
- Submit only after checking the final quantity and side. A decimal-place mistake can make an otherwise reasonable order much larger than intended.
What to do after an unexpected fill
Read the execution report, not just the chart
Open the order or trade history and inspect each fill: quantity, price, timestamp, fees, and any remaining amount. The weighted-average price explains the total result better than a single candle or last-trade number.
Distinguish a partial fill from a failed order
An order can be partly executed while the remainder is still open, canceled, or expired. Check the status before submitting a replacement; otherwise you could unintentionally double your exposure.
Compare the fill with the applicable rule
If a warning, protection point, or halt was displayed, save the order identifier and the venue’s rule for that product. Support can investigate a specific execution, but an unfavorable price is not necessarily an error when the order was allowed to consume available liquidity.
Do not chase automatically
Submitting a second market order immediately after a surprising fill can compound the same problem. Reassess the remaining position, current depth, and your price limit before acting again.
Common assumptions that fail in fast markets
- “The last price is my execution price.” It is a historical trade, not a guarantee for your order.
- “A market order will fill at one price.” It can consume several levels and produce one average price.
- “A limit order always fills if the chart touches it.” Queue priority, available quantity, and the exact matching price determine whether you trade.
- “A stop guarantees the stop price.” The trigger can be followed by a gap or a thin order book.
- “A 2% warning is normal crypto slippage.” Coinbase’s warning is a venue-interface rule, not a market average.
- “A halt protects my exact entry or exit.” A halt pauses matching under its rule; it does not set a guaranteed reopening price.
A practical decision framework
Use a market order when completing the trade immediately is more important than knowing the exact price and the expected depth is sufficient for your size. Use a limit order when crossing a stated price would make the trade unacceptable and you can tolerate waiting or a partial fill. Use a stop when an event should activate an order, but treat the trigger as a condition rather than a guaranteed execution. Use a stop-limit only when avoiding prices beyond the limit outweighs the risk of no fill.
For every choice, write down three numbers before submitting: the intended quantity, the worst acceptable effective price, and the maximum exposure you can tolerate if the order is only partly completed. Then check the venue’s current rules for the specific market instead of relying on behavior from another platform.
Bottom line
When crypto prices move faster than expected, the order book—not the quote on your screen—determines what trades. Market orders favor immediacy and can suffer multi-level slippage; limit orders preserve a price boundary but may not fill; stops can trigger into a gap; and venue safeguards differ by product. Understanding those trade-offs, checking available depth, and setting an acceptable price before sending the order are the practical ways to avoid being surprised by the execution report.
