The school must immediately keep an ineligible player out of all intercollegiate competition. The rest of the basketball team can continue to play, although the coach must adjust the rotation. Whether the player’s past appearances affect the team’s record or lead to other sanctions depends on the circumstances and applicable rules; an ineligibility ruling does not automatically erase wins.
Can the team keep playing?
Yes. NCAA rules require the institution to withhold the ineligible athlete, not to suspend the entire team. Eligible players may continue competing, with the coach deciding how to cover the player’s minutes and role. The basketball impact varies with the roster and game situation.

Under NCAA Bylaw 14.1.3.1, the institution must apply the applicable eligibility rule immediately. A pending review of an interpretation does not pause that responsibility.

Can the player be reinstated?
The institution may appeal for restoration if it believes the circumstances warrant it. The NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee evaluates reinstatement requests individually; an appeal is an avenue for review, not a guarantee that the athlete will be cleared to play.

- Premium Carcass Construction - Excellent rebound and durability
Reinstatement and enforcement are separate processes. Reinstatement addresses whether the individual athlete may compete. Enforcement determines whether violations occurred and whether the school should face sanctions.
What if the player already appeared in a game?
If an athlete competes while ineligible, NCAA Bylaw 14.1.3.2.1 says the athlete shall be denied eligibility in that sport. The institution can appeal for restoration, but the appearance creates an additional eligibility issue beyond the player being held out going forward.

That rule does not mean every team result involving an ineligible player is automatically changed. The NCAA manual describes a specific restitution process when an athlete competed under a court restraining order or injunction that is later vacated, stayed or reversed, or a court finally determines the relief was unjustified. In that situation, the NCAA Management Council may impose one or more measures under Bylaw 14.1.3.2.2, including:
- Vacating individual or team records, abrogating victories or forfeiting games.
- Requiring the return of individual or team awards.
- Making the institution ineligible for postseason competition in the affected sport and season.
- Imposing financial consequences.
Those measures are tied to that injunction-related situation; they should not be treated as automatic penalties for every ineligibility finding. The outcome depends on the facts and the applicable rule.

Which eligibility rules apply?
The answer can depend on the player’s NCAA division and enrollment cohort. Division I adopted an age-based eligibility model in June 2026, with transition rules that distinguish athletes already eligible after the 2025–26 academic year, first-time full-time enrollees in 2026–27, and prospects first enrolling in fall 2027 or later. For the first two groups, schools apply either the prior rules or the new age-based model, whichever is more favorable to the individual; fall 2027-or-later entrants use the new model. See the NCAA’s June 2026 Division I announcement.
NCAA Division I and II guidance says the age-based model generally allows up to five years when age and enrollment conditions are met, with the eligibility period running continuously once triggered. Academic and other athletics requirements still apply, so being within that period alone does not establish that a player is eligible to compete. Consult the NCAA’s Division I and II age-based eligibility guidance and identify the athlete’s division and cohort before applying the precise rule.
