It compares the expected value of the Bitcoin produced by each machine with the incremental electricity and other avoidable costs. If that margin becomes negative, the operator can reduce load, stop some or all machines, or—where its contract allows it—return power to the grid for a curtailment credit. The result depends on the power contract, hourly market, site rules, machine efficiency, Bitcoin value and network difficulty; there is no universal electricity-price threshold at which every miner must stop.
Why higher power prices change the mining decision
Electricity is a variable cost: a miner generally pays more when it runs more machines for more hours. A price increase therefore reduces the contribution margin of every unit of computing capacity. The relevant question is not simply whether the monthly power bill is larger, but whether the next kilowatt-hour is expected to generate more Bitcoin value than it costs.

That comparison is made at the margin. An operator estimates the Bitcoin revenue attributable to a machine or site over a period, subtracts the electricity tariff and other costs that can be avoided by switching the equipment off, and then decides whether to keep the load online. Avoidable costs can include cooling, transaction-related operating costs and some labor or maintenance expenses, although the exact list differs by facility. Debt service, leases and other fixed costs may continue even while machines are idle.
Bitcoin revenue per machine is not fixed. It changes with the Bitcoin price, the network’s total hashrate and mining difficulty, pool terms, machine efficiency and uptime. Two sites paying different electricity prices can therefore reach opposite decisions at the same market price. A newer, efficient machine may remain profitable while an older machine at the same site is switched off.

There is no universal shutdown price
Public-company filings do not establish a single break-even electricity rate that applies across the industry. A threshold for curtailment depends on at least five operating variables:
- Power pricing: A fixed-price contract, a variable tariff or a wholesale-indexed arrangement exposes the site to different hourly costs.
- Timing and location: Prices can change by hour and differ between grid nodes, so a daily average can hide the hours when mining is uneconomic.
- Machine efficiency: More joules per terahash means more electricity is required to earn the same expected Bitcoin revenue.
- Bitcoin and network conditions: Bitcoin’s market value, network difficulty and competing hashrate determine how much revenue a given load can produce.
- Contract and grid rules: Curtailment rights, notice periods, penalties and any credits or demand-response payments can make reducing load more or less valuable.
Consequently, a miner may continue operating through a price level that would force another site offline. A quoted “cost per Bitcoin” should also be read carefully: it may describe purchased energy only, rather than the full cost of mining.
What an operator can do when rates rise
Continue operating
If expected mining revenue still exceeds the incremental electricity and other avoidable costs, the rational response is to keep the relevant machines online. Operators may rank equipment by efficiency and turn off the least efficient units first rather than treating the facility as an all-or-nothing switch. Whether that optimization is possible depends on the site’s controls, cooling design and operating procedures.

Curtail some or all machines
Curtailment means temporarily reducing electrical demand. It can involve lowering load at selected racks, shutting down older equipment or stopping the entire site. MARA Holdings states in its 2025 Form 10-K: “When prices rise or supply is constrained, we may curtail our operations to avoid using power at increased rates.” That is a company-specific policy statement, not a rule that every miner follows.
A 2026 working paper using Texas as its empirical setting reports that mining load falls as electricity-sector costs rise. It also finds that the size of the response depends on hashprice, a measure of expected mining revenue per unit of hashrate. Because the paper studies Texas, its relationship should not be treated as a global operating law.
Return contracted power and seek curtailment credits
A fixed-price power agreement can create an opportunity during a wholesale-price spike. If the market value of electricity rises far enough above the contract price, the operator may be able to stop mining, return the unused power to the utility or market, and receive a credit. Riot Platforms describes this logic in its 2026 Form 10-Q: “We power down operations and return power to the utility when prevailing market electricity prices offer the potential for us to realize power curtailment credits in excess of the Bitcoin Mining revenues we would have otherwise generated.”

The comparison is between the credit available for curtailing and the Bitcoin revenue forgone by stopping. The contract may also specify when the operator can curtail, how much notice is required and how the credit is calculated. A market spike by itself does not guarantee that a particular site can sell power back or receive a payment.

Participate in demand-response or ancillary programs
Some large operators bid flexible load into grid programs. Riot reports participation involving ERCOT and MISO and says credits may be available even when it is not called upon to power down. MARA, by contrast, says its curtailment is not significantly compensated. These disclosures show why “miners get paid to shut down” is too broad: eligibility, payment formulas and dispatch conditions are specific to the market and contract.
Absorb the increase or change the operating plan
An operator can also continue paying the higher rate, negotiate contract terms, alter the site’s operating schedule or reconsider where and how capacity is deployed. The filings establish that hourly exposure, contract design and curtailment programs matter, but they do not establish one generally profitable relocation, renegotiation or equipment-replacement strategy. Those decisions require the site’s own tariff, capital costs and operational constraints.

Fixed-price and variable-price arrangements compared
| Operating dimension | Fixed-price power arrangement | Variable or market-indexed arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Exposure to a wholesale price spike | The mining energy price may remain fixed for the contract term, subject to its clauses. | The site’s cost can rise with the tariff or market index, potentially making high-price hours uneconomic quickly. |
| Value of curtailment | Returning power may create a spread or credit if the contract and market rules permit it. | There may be less contractual spread to capture; the benefit is primarily avoiding the expensive consumption. |
| Operational conditions | Notice, minimum load, dispatch and settlement terms are contract-specific. | Tariff rules, hourly price calculations and utility requirements are contract- and location-specific. |
| Grid-program payments | Possible where the site qualifies; Riot reports ERCOT and MISO credits. | Possible in some markets, but availability and compensation are not established universally. |
| Evidence of compensation in the cited disclosures | Riot reports curtailment credits; MARA reports no significant compensation for its curtailment. | Not stated as a universal outcome. |
This comparison is about incentives, not a guarantee that either arrangement is cheaper. A fixed contract can protect a miner from rising prices but may impose take-or-pay obligations or limit flexibility. A variable contract can expose the operator to spikes while allowing consumption to respond directly to cheaper hours.
How Bitcoin economics amplify or offset a power-price move
Bitcoin value
When Bitcoin’s value rises, the revenue obtainable from a machine can increase, allowing the operator to tolerate a higher electricity cost. When Bitcoin’s value falls, the same tariff can make the machine uneconomic. A curtailment decision therefore cannot be inferred from the power price alone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Network difficulty and hashrate
Mining revenue is shared across competing hashrate. If global hashrate or network difficulty rises faster than an operator’s own capacity, each machine may earn less Bitcoin even when it consumes the same electricity. MARA attributed the increase in its owned-site purchased energy cost per Bitcoin in the second quarter of 2026 partly to higher power costs and global network difficulty outpacing its hashrate growth.
Best Value
Efficiency and facility load
Two machines drawing the same electrical power do not necessarily produce the same hashrate. Cooling overhead and facility power usage also affect the cost of delivering a unit of hashrate. An operator may therefore curtail inefficient machines first, preserve newer hardware, or vary the site’s load by season and hour.

The following figures illustrate exposure at named U.S.-focused public companies. They are not industry averages, and the periods and definitions differ.
| Company and period | Reported measure | Figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| MARA Holdings, 2025 | Energy cost as a share of revenue at owned mining facilities | 38.5% | Company-specific ratio; the filing identifies energy as its most significant cost driver. |
| MARA Holdings, 2024 | Energy cost as a share of revenue at owned mining facilities | 40.8% | Comparable company-specific ratio for the prior year. |
| MARA Holdings, 2025 and 2024 | Average direct energy price at owned facilities | $0.04 per kWh in both years | An average that does not reveal every hourly price, site difference or contract structure. |
| MARA Holdings, 2025 | Purchased energy cost per Bitcoin at owned facilities | $38,956 | Purchased energy only, not an all-in mining cost. |
| MARA Holdings, 2024 | Purchased energy cost per Bitcoin at owned facilities | $29,084 | Purchased energy only, not an all-in mining cost. |
| MARA Holdings, Q2 2026 | Purchased energy costs for owned mining operations | $48.8 million | Up from $41.7 million in Q2 2025; MARA attributed the increase primarily to site expansion and 22% growth in total hashrate, not solely to power prices. |
| MARA Holdings, Q2 2026 | Average cost at owned sites | $0.04 per kWh | Its letter said purchased energy cost per Bitcoin was $38,690, versus $33,735 in Q2 2025. |
| CleanSpark, three months ended June 30 | Energy expense as a percentage of Bitcoin mining revenue | 61.8% in 2026; 45.3% in 2025 | Period-specific CleanSpark figures. |
| CleanSpark, nine months ended June 30 | Energy expense as a percentage of Bitcoin mining revenue | 57.6% in 2026; 44.1% in 2025 | Period-specific figures for the corresponding nine-month periods. |
MARA also reported that power costs rose relative to the prior quarter in Q2 2026 because of adverse weather, while kilowatt-hours consumed were relatively consistent year over year. That example demonstrates why a higher energy bill can reflect more than a higher unit price: site expansion, hashrate growth, weather and network conditions all matter.

A practical decision process for a mining site
The exact controls differ by operator, but a site assessing a price increase generally needs the following sequence:
- Identify the applicable price: Read the tariff or power agreement for the relevant hour, node, demand charge, pass-through item and any minimum-purchase obligation.
- Estimate current machine revenue: Use the site’s hashrate, machine efficiency, pool arrangement, Bitcoin value and current network difficulty to estimate revenue for the same period.
- Separate avoidable and fixed costs: Include the electricity and other costs that actually disappear when a machine is stopped; do not treat every accounting expense as avoidable.
- Check contractual options: Confirm whether curtailment is allowed, required or penalized, what notice is needed, and whether a credit or demand-response payment applies.
- Rank the load: If controls permit, reduce the least efficient or highest-cost machines first and preserve capacity with the strongest expected margin.
- Execute and verify: Ramp down according to electrical and cooling procedures, record the dispatched load and settlement data, and restore machines only when the expected margin and grid conditions justify doing so.
This process should be repeated as prices, hashprice, difficulty and contract signals change. A monthly average can be insufficient when a site pays hourly prices.
Trade-offs and failure modes
- Stopping avoids consumption but loses revenue: The operator gives up Bitcoin production during the curtailed interval and may incur restart labor or wear.
- Credits are not guaranteed: A program may require registration, dispatch capability, metering or specific market conditions. MARA’s disclosure of insignificant compensation is a reminder that curtailment can be purely defensive.
- Average prices can conceal exposure: MARA’s reported $0.04 per kWh average does not describe every hour or facility.
- Energy cost per Bitcoin is incomplete: The MARA figures for $38,956 in 2025 and $29,084 in 2024 cover purchased energy, not the total cost of mining.
- Network changes can overwhelm a power move: Difficulty or competing hashrate can reduce revenue even if the electricity tariff is unchanged.
- Grid obligations can constrain timing: A site may not be free to switch off or restart whenever it wants if its agreement specifies notice, minimum load or reliability conditions.
Bottom line
Rising power prices squeeze a miner’s marginal profit. The operation keeps running when expected Bitcoin revenue covers incremental power and avoidable costs; otherwise it reduces load or shuts down, and some contract holders can earn more by returning power or participating in grid programs. Because tariffs, contracts, market rules, machine efficiency, Bitcoin value and network difficulty differ, the correct answer is a site-specific calculation—not a universal shutdown price.
