If Indian Railways cancels your Vande Bharat Sleeper service, an IRCTC e-ticket refund is processed automatically. If the train is running more than three hours late at your journey-commencing station and you decide not to travel, you can claim a full fare refund without cancellation charges—but an e-ticket passenger must file an online Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) before the train actually departs, and nobody on that PNR may have travelled. Those disruption rules are different from the deductions that apply when you cancel a confirmed ticket for your own reasons.
The two situations passengers must keep separate
There are two different rule sets. A railway-initiated disruption means the railway cancels the service or the train is more than three hours late. A passenger-initiated cancellation means you decide not to use a confirmed booking even though the service is operating under its published schedule.

| Situation | What you must do | Refund treatment | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Railway cancels the Vande Bharat Sleeper | For an IRCTC e-ticket, normally nothing; retain your booking and payment records. | IRCTC says the refund is processed automatically. | No TDR filing requirement is listed for a train-cancelled e-ticket. |
| Train is more than three hours late at the journey-commencing station and you do not travel | File an online TDR before the train actually departs. | Full fare refund with no cancellation charge under the late-running rule. | All passengers on the PNR must not have travelled. |
| You cancel a confirmed ticket for personal reasons | Cancel within the applicable Vande Bharat Sleeper window. | 25% or 50% of the fare may be deducted, or no refund may be due. | The 2026 amendment sets an eight-hour cutoff for cancellation or online TDR filing. |
Do not apply the voluntary-cancellation percentages to a train that the railway cancelled or to a qualifying late-running claim. The cause of the change determines which rule applies.
What if the Vande Bharat Sleeper is cancelled?
IRCTC e-tickets are refunded automatically
IRCTC’s e-ticket refund table states that when the train is cancelled, the e-ticket refund is processed automatically. The cited guidance does not require you to file a TDR for this case. The refund is for the eligible fare under the booking; the material does not promise a particular number of days or hours for the money to reach your original payment method.

Keep the PNR, ticket PDF or message, payment reference and bank or card statement until the credit appears. If the automatic refund does not show, those records give you the information needed when contacting IRCTC or your payment provider. Do not submit a late-running TDR merely because you have not yet seen the automatic credit: a cancellation and a delay claim are separate categories.
Check that the service really is cancelled
A delayed train, a rescheduled train and a cancelled train can produce different remedies. Confirm the status through an official railway enquiry channel close to departure rather than relying on an old launch announcement, a social-media post or a search result. The first commercial Vande Bharat Sleeper service announced by the Ministry of Railways was Train 27576 from Kamakhya to Howrah, with departures scheduled from Kamakhya on 22 January 2026 and from Howrah on 23 January 2026. Those dates describe the launch announcement, not a guarantee that the same route, timetable or service is operating today.
My train is more than three hours late—can I leave and get my money back?
The threshold is measured at the starting station
The late-running rule applies when the train is delayed by more than three hours from its scheduled departure at the station where your journey begins. “More than three hours” is not the same as exactly three hours. Check the scheduled and expected departure for your journey-commencing station, not merely the train’s delay at a later stop or your estimated arrival at the destination.

You must not travel
If you choose the full-refund remedy, the journey must not be undertaken. IRCTC’s guidance says the rule covers passengers holding fully or partially confirmed tickets, but it also states that all passengers on the PNR must not have travelled. If one passenger on a shared PNR boards or uses the booking, do not assume the other passengers can automatically claim the same disruption refund.
File the online TDR before actual departure
For an IRCTC e-ticket, file the online Ticket Deposit Receipt before the train actually departs. Use the booking’s online TDR function while the record still shows the affected journey. Select the reason that corresponds to the train running more than three hours late and submit the claim; save the TDR number or confirmation screen.
Website and app labels can change, so follow the current IRCTC prompts rather than an old screenshot. The critical facts are the reason selected, the submission time and the train’s actual departure. Filing after departure can make the claim ineligible even if the train eventually arrived much later.

What refund is promised?
IRCTC’s stated rule is: “No cancellation charge will be levied and full fare will be refunded back to all passengers holding fully or partially confirmed tickets, if the journey is not undertaken due to late running of the train by more than three hours.” This is a fare-refund rule, not a promise to reimburse every cost caused by the delay.

- Train cancelled: The cited IRCTC e-ticket table says the refund is automatic and does not list a TDR requirement.
- More than three hours late and you will not travel: Yes. File the online TDR before actual departure, and ensure nobody on the PNR has travelled.
- You are cancelling for personal reasons: Follow the Vande Bharat Sleeper cancellation process and the eight-hour cutoff. A voluntary cancellation is not converted into a delay claim simply because the train is inconvenient.
Take a screenshot or download the acknowledgement after submitting a TDR. If the claim is later questioned, the reference number and timestamp show what you submitted and when.
What if I cancel a confirmed Vande Bharat Sleeper ticket myself?
The 2026 Railway Board amendment, G.S.R. 41(E), sets a Vande Bharat Sleeper-specific schedule for confirmed-ticket cancellations. It says that when a confirmed ticket is presented for cancellation, the fare is refunded after the applicable cancellation charge is deducted:

| When you cancel before scheduled departure | Deduction from fare | Refund position |
|---|---|---|
| More than 72 hours | 25% of the fare | Fare less the 25% cancellation charge, subject to the applicable ticket rules. |

| Less than 8 hours | Not stated as a percentage because no refund is admissible. | No refund. |
The time windows are measured against the train’s scheduled departure. They are not measured from when you first hear about a delay, when you reach the station or when you decide to change your plans.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The special eight-hour cutoff
The amendment contains a separate deadline: “no refund of fare shall be admissible on the tickets in case the ticket is not cancelled or TDR not filed online upto eight hours before the scheduled departure of the train.” In practical terms, do not wait until the last few minutes if you already know you will not travel. Cancel or file the relevant online TDR as early as possible and before the applicable cutoff.

Because the eight-hour amendment and the operational late-running instruction address different parts of the process, a passenger who may rely on a delay refund should submit the TDR immediately after confirming the qualifying delay rather than waiting for the train to leave. If the train’s status or the correct reason is unclear, preserve the live status and ask IRCTC or railway support while the booking remains active.

A safe step-by-step response to a disruption
- Check the official status. Verify whether the service is cancelled, rescheduled or merely late, using a current Indian Railways enquiry channel.
- Identify the station and time that matter. For a delay claim, compare the scheduled departure and expected departure at your journey-commencing station. The qualifying threshold is more than three hours.
- Decide whether anyone will travel. A full late-running refund requires that the journey not be undertaken and that all passengers on the PNR have not travelled.
- Use the correct action. For a cancellation, wait for the automatic e-ticket refund while keeping records. For a qualifying delay, file the online TDR before actual departure. For a personal change of plan, use the voluntary-cancellation schedule.
- Act before the deadline. The Vande Bharat Sleeper amendment makes the eight-hour cutoff important. Do not assume a request filed after that point will be accepted.
- Save evidence. Keep the PNR, ticket, status details, TDR acknowledgement and payment reference until the refund is visible.
- Escalate with specifics. If an expected automatic refund or approved claim does not appear, provide the PNR, journey date, train number, payment reference and TDR number to the relevant official support channel.
What the rules do not promise
No published average-delay figure
There is no standalone official statistic in the cited material establishing how often Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are delayed or how long delays usually last. Do not use an online average or a launch-day claim to predict your particular journey.
No stated processing-time guarantee
The automatic-refund guidance confirms the process but does not specify when the money will arrive. A delay in seeing the credit is not, by itself, evidence that the claim was rejected.
No established compensation for consequential losses
The rules described here establish fare-refund eligibility. They do not establish a separate entitlement for a missed connecting train, hotel, meals, lost work, taxi, event ticket or other consequential cost. Do not budget on the assumption that those expenses will be reimbursed.

- Using ordinary cancellation percentages for a railway cancellation: the 25% and 50% deductions concern a passenger cancelling a confirmed ticket, not an automatically cancelled service.
- Waiting until after departure to file a delay TDR: the late-running instruction requires filing before the train actually departs.
- Counting exactly three hours as “more than three hours”: the stated threshold is strictly greater than three hours.
- Letting one traveller use a shared PNR: IRCTC says all passengers on the PNR must not have travelled for the qualifying delay refund.
- Relying on an old route announcement: launch dates and inaugural routes are not live operating-status information.
- Assuming a refund date: the cited guidance gives no fixed arrival timeline, so retain records and monitor the original payment method.
Quick decision guide
| Your situation | Best next action |
|---|---|
| The railway has cancelled the service. | For an IRCTC e-ticket, wait for automatic processing; retain the booking and payment evidence. |
| The train is more than three hours late at your starting station and nobody will travel. | File the online TDR before actual departure; make sure every passenger on the PNR remains unused. |
| The train is operating, but you no longer want to go. | Cancel under the Vande Bharat Sleeper schedule: 25% deduction over 72 hours, 50% from 72 through 8 hours, and no refund under 8 hours. |
| You are unsure whether the train is cancelled or delayed. | Check a current official railway enquiry channel before choosing a cancellation or TDR reason. |
Bottom line for passengers
A cancelled Vande Bharat Sleeper e-ticket is handled through automatic IRCTC refund processing. A qualifying delay is different: the train must be more than three hours late at the journey-commencing station, nobody on the PNR may travel, and an online TDR must be filed before actual departure. If you simply change your mind, the Vande Bharat Sleeper cancellation table applies instead, with 25% or 50% deductions depending on how early you cancel and no refund under the eight-hour window.
