Tap the Bee Card on the Bee Card reader as normal. The card is a prepaid public-transport smartcard, not a phone-dependent payment method.
The Apple Wallet part needs a qualification: Bee Card’s official information describes a physical card and does not document a Bee Card stored in Apple Wallet. Apple’s low-battery power reserve can support some eligible Wallet items configured for Express Mode, but Apple does not identify Bee Card as one of them. If the card cannot be used, you still need a valid ticket; in most regions, the Bee Card FAQ says you can buy a cash ticket from the driver.

First, identify which card you are actually using
The answer depends on whether “Bee Card” means the plastic Bee Card or a different transit card in Apple Wallet.

Bee Card describes itself as a prepaid travel smartcard used for public transport in ten New Zealand regions. You present the card to a Bee Card reader to tag on and, where the service requires it, tag off. The transaction is handled by the card and the transport system, so your iPhone’s battery level is irrelevant.

Official Bee Card information explains the physical-card process in its Frequently Asked Questions and on Get a Bee Card. Those pages do not establish that a Bee Card can be added to Apple Wallet.
A transit card stored in Apple Wallet
Apple Wallet can use Express Mode for certain supported transit cards, passes and keys. Apple says an eligible item may continue working in power reserve after the iPhone needs charging. That is a general Apple Wallet capability; it is not confirmation that Bee Card supports Wallet or Express Mode.
Therefore, do not assume that an iPhone with a flat battery can replace a physical Bee Card. Treat the Apple exception as applying only to a transit item that is officially supported, already added to Wallet and configured for Express Mode.
What happens when the physical Bee Card is used with a dead iPhone?
Nothing unusual: the physical card should continue to work. Hold the Bee Card to the reader’s marked area until the reader confirms the transaction. The phone can be switched off, out of charge or left at home because it is not part of the card’s tap transaction.

- Tag on with the Bee Card before boarding where the local service requires it.
- Tag off when you leave if that route or operator uses tag-off.
- Wait for the reader’s successful beep or other confirmation.
- Keep the card separate from other contactless cards while tapping to avoid presenting the wrong card.
A phone battery is useful for checking journey information or contacting the operator, but it is not a prerequisite for a physical Bee Card fare transaction.
Can Apple power reserve pay when the iPhone is flat?
Sometimes, but only for qualifying Express Mode items. Apple’s support guidance says power reserve works for up to five hours with some cards, passes and keys that have Express Mode turned on. “Up to five hours” is a maximum stated for supported items, not a promise that every iPhone, transit card or Wallet configuration will last that long.
Apple’s security documentation, published May 7, 2024, describes the mechanism this way: “If iOS isn’t running because iPhone needs to be charged, there may still be enough power in the battery to support Express Card transactions.” The wording matters. The reserve is intended for a small set of low-power transactions after the phone reaches its charging threshold; it is not normal iOS operation and does not mean every Wallet card remains usable.

Conditions that must be true for the Apple exception
The item must support Express Mode
Power reserve is not a universal “dead-phone payment” feature. The transit card or other item must be one Apple and the issuer support for Express Mode. The Bee Card sources cited above describe a physical card and do not name an Apple Wallet version, so there is no published basis for saying a Bee Card itself qualifies.
Express Mode must be enabled
Apple says Express Mode is turned on by default when an eligible transit card or compatible item is added, but you can inspect or change the setting in Wallet. Open Wallet, select the card, open its card details and look for the Express Mode setting. The exact labels can vary by iOS version and card issuer. If the item is not eligible, an Express Mode control may not be available.
The phone must be in the low-battery state, not manually shut down
Power reserve is different from choosing Settings › General › Shut Down or using the physical-button shutdown controls. Apple warns that a standard manual shutdown makes the feature unavailable. A phone that has reached the “needs charging” state may retain a small reserve for supported Express Mode transactions; a phone that you deliberately turn off does not.

The reserve is limited
Apple’s “up to five hours” figure applies only to some supported items and is not a measured Bee Card result. Age, battery condition, temperature, device model, prior use and the particular Wallet item can affect what remains available. Do not plan a full day of travel around the maximum.

How to check whether an Express Mode item is still available
When an iPhone needs charging, Apple says you can press the side button on a Face ID iPhone or the Home button on a model that has one to check which cards, passes or keys remain available. The phone may show the available item even though ordinary apps cannot open.
- Leave the iPhone in its low-battery state; do not perform a standard shutdown.
- Press the side button or Home button once to check the available Express Mode items.
- Use only an item that Apple indicates is still available.
- Present the iPhone to the compatible reader in the same way you normally would for Express Mode.
- Look or listen for the reader’s confirmation. Apple’s security guide says an eligible low-battery transaction can provide haptic feedback without a normal on-screen notification.
Do not repeatedly wake the phone just to check. Apple warns that checking repeatedly can significantly reduce the remaining reserve, shortening the time available for an actual transaction.

Apple’s documentation explains the behavior of eligible Wallet items; it does not turn every contactless transport card into an Apple Wallet card. Unless Bee Card or your regional transport authority explicitly provides Wallet instructions, carry and use the physical card.

What to do if the Bee Card will not tag on or off
A failed tap does not automatically mean your phone battery caused the problem. The Bee Card FAQ says a passenger must still have a valid ticket and advises checking with the driver if there is no successful beep or confirmation. The problem could be the card, the reader, an account or balance issue, or a local service rule.
At the reader
- Hold the Bee Card flat and still over the reader until it responds.
- Remove other contactless cards, bank cards and electronic passes from the same wallet or sleeve.
- Try the reader again once; rapid repeated taps can create uncertainty about which transaction was accepted.
- If the reader still gives no success indication, ask the driver before boarding or continuing.
If you cannot tag on or tag off
According to the Bee Card FAQ, cash tickets from the driver are available in most regions. “Most” is not “all”: cash acceptance, exact fares, change, route rules and boarding procedures vary by regional operator. Ask the driver or consult the local transport provider for the current alternative before assuming cash will be accepted.
Keep the ticket supplied by the driver. A dead phone does not remove the requirement to hold a valid ticket, and the availability of a physical Bee Card does not excuse an unsuccessful or missing tag where the local rules require one.

Practical preparation before a journey
If you rely on the physical Bee Card
- Carry the Bee Card itself; do not rely on a photo, card number or Wallet shortcut.
- Check that the card is readable and that you know whether your route requires tag-off.
- Keep a backup payment method or enough cash for a driver-issued ticket where that option is offered.
- Save the local operator’s contact or service information before leaving if you expect your phone may run low.
If you are using another transit card in Wallet
- Confirm that the issuer supports Apple Wallet and Express Mode in your region.
- Check the card’s Express Mode setting while the iPhone is charged.
- Do not manually shut down the phone when you are trying to preserve power-reserve access.
- Carry a physical alternative when missing a fare would be difficult, because Apple’s five-hour statement is only an upper limit for some items.
Charging equipment
A portable charger can reduce the chance of reaching the low-battery state, but it is optional preparation, not a requirement for using a physical Bee Card. If you buy one, check the capacity, size and weight, charging speed, connector compatibility and whether your iPhone supports the charger’s wired or wireless output. Those specifications depend on the charger and phone; they do not change Bee Card’s physical-card operation.
Common situations and the correct response

The short answer for this exact question
If “Bee Card” means the standard physical Bee Card, your iPhone battery dying has no effect on the card: tap it on the reader and follow the local tag-on and tag-off rules.
If you actually mean another transit card stored in Apple Wallet, power reserve may allow a limited transaction after the phone needs charging, but only when that card is eligible for Express Mode and Express Mode is enabled. Apple’s “up to five hours” guidance is not Bee Card-specific, and manually shutting down the iPhone disables the feature. When no tap succeeds, obtain a valid ticket from the driver or another local option rather than travelling without proof of payment.
