You may still be able to request a redemption, transfer your shares to an eligible investor, or sell them on a secondary market—but none of those routes is guaranteed just because the fund uses tokens. If the fund cannot readily sell its underlying assets, its documents and applicable rules determine whether redemptions can be delayed, restricted, charged a fee, or suspended. A blockchain transfer can record or initiate a transfer; it does not create a buyer or make the fund’s assets liquid.
First identify which kind of exit you mean
“Sell my token” can describe three different transactions. They have different counterparties, prices, processing steps, and risks. Start by identifying which one the fund actually supports.

| Exit route | Who is on the other side? | What determines whether it works? |
|---|---|---|
| Redemption | The fund, under its redemption process | The fund’s dealing terms, valuation rules, available liquidity, and any applicable restrictions or suspension powers |
| Private or peer-to-peer transfer or sale | A specific eligible investor | Transfer restrictions, recipient approval, register-update procedures, and whether a willing counterparty agrees to the transaction |
| Secondary-market sale | A buyer trading through an established venue or platform | Whether that venue is actually operating for this product, access and eligibility, market depth, and the price a buyer will pay |
A token standard, wallet balance, or permissioned transfer facility is not itself a public trading market. For example, a J.P. Morgan Trust IV prospectus filed May 13, 2026 describes blockchain transfers as instructions to the transfer agent to update the official Investor Register. The prospectus says peer-to-peer transfers are not a public trading market, the fund had no current secondary-market agreement, and there might be few or no eligible recipients. Those statements describe that fund, not every tokenized fund.

A fund’s investors own an interest governed by the fund documents; they do not automatically have a right to sell the fund’s portfolio assets themselves. If those assets cannot be sold readily, the fund may not be able to meet every redemption request immediately on ordinary terms. What it can do in that situation depends on the specific fund documents and the rules that apply to it.

Possible consequences include a delay in processing or paying redemptions, limits on how much can be redeemed, a liquidity-related fee, or a suspension where permitted. These are not universal features, and a fund’s documents may set conditions and procedures for using them. A token ledger cannot remove the underlying constraint: recording shares on a blockchain does not make the fund’s investments easier to sell.
For a product-specific example, a Franklin Templeton government money-market fund prospectus filed with the SEC says that at least 99.5% of its total assets are invested in government securities, cash, and fully collateralized repurchase agreements. It also reserves the board’s ability to impose liquidity fees or redemption gates after prior notice. The filing says blockchain recording does not affect the fund’s investments and that no alternative trading system arrangement was then in place; it says such a feature might never become available. The allocation and powers are specific to that prospectus and should not be generalized to other funds.
Redemption: check the fund’s actual terms
Redemption means asking the fund to buy back or cancel shares under its primary-market process. It is not the same as finding a buyer on a trading platform. A redemption request may have to meet a cutoff, be submitted in proper form, and be accepted during specified dealing windows. The fund may calculate the applicable price after the request is submitted rather than using the latest displayed NAV.

Before relying on redemption as an exit route, locate the current prospectus and dealing procedures, then check the following provisions:
- Submission requirements: who may submit a request, what information or authorization is required, which channel must be used, and what makes a request complete or in proper form.
- Cutoffs and dealing windows: when requests are accepted, the relevant time zone, and whether requests outside a window are processed at a later dealing time.
- Valuation: whether the redemption price uses the next calculated NAV or another method, and when that NAV is calculated. A displayed or previously reported NAV may not be the price for a new request.
- Payment: the stated settlement or payment period, how it is counted, and whether exceptional circumstances permit a delay.
- Liquidity tools: any fees, gates, limits, or suspension provisions, including the conditions under which the fund may use them.
The Superstate prospectus filed with the SEC illustrates why the details matter. For that fund, redemption is at the next calculated NAV and payment is typically made in one to two business days. The prospectus says payment may take up to seven days in stated circumstances and that redemption may be suspended or postponed longer in unusual circumstances as authorized by SEC rules. These are that fund’s terms, not a timetable or promise for tokenized funds generally.
Transfer or private sale: a recipient is not automatic
A holder may be allowed to transfer shares to another investor, but permission to transfer does not mean any wallet can receive them. The recipient may need to satisfy eligibility rules or be allowlisted, and the transfer agent may need to process the change on the official register. Until the required registration step is complete, the sender’s on-chain instruction or the recipient’s wallet display may not, by itself, establish that the recipient is the recognized owner.

J.P. Morgan Trust IV’s May 13, 2026 prospectus says that, under normal conditions, its transfer agent updates the Investor Register at least daily on business days. It also says a transferee is not yet the owner of the shares until that update is complete. This is a specific operational arrangement; other funds may have different registration and processing rules. The practical questions are whether a transfer is permitted, who must approve it, how the official register is updated, and what event the governing documents treat as completion.
A private sale additionally requires a counterparty willing to buy at an agreed price. The fund’s or platform’s ability to process an eligible transfer does not establish that a buyer exists, what price that buyer will offer, or when the transaction can settle. A transfer can also be a gift or other change of ownership rather than a sale; the fact that a token moved does not show that cash changed hands.
Secondary trading: a venue and liquidity must both be real
A secondary market can give holders another possible exit, but it must be available for the particular product. Check whether trading is live or merely contemplated, which investors can access it, whether market makers or other buyers are present, and what happens when trading is thin or disrupted. A platform listing or a regulatory framework allowing secondary trading is not a guarantee of execution at a particular time or price.

Even when a secondary transaction executes, its price can differ from the fund’s NAV. NAV is part of the fund’s primary subscription and redemption process; a secondary-market price is determined by the buyers and sellers in that market. The difference matters if an investor is choosing between selling to another holder and submitting a redemption request. Neither the latest NAV nor a price displayed on a platform necessarily guarantees the proceeds from the other route.
Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) set requirements for secondary trading of tokenized SFC-authorized investment products in its April 20, 2026 circular. The requirements include arrangements with market makers, liquidity monitoring, investor alerts for significant deviation from indicative NAV, disclosure of the primary subscription or redemption alternative, and operational links between secondary and primary markets. The circular also notes that primary orders may remain subject to ordinary dealing windows, liquidity-risk tools, and forward pricing. These are requirements for the relevant firms and products; they do not promise that an investor can always trade, or dictate the price at which a trade will occur.

In the UK, the Financial Conduct Authority’s PS26/7, published April 30, 2026, introduced an optional Direct to Fund model for authorized funds, whether traditional or tokenized. The FCA says the rules and guidance took effect immediately. The model is UK policy context; it is not a universal exit right and does not establish the redemption terms of a particular fund.
Hong Kong’s SFC framework concerns secondary trading of tokenized SFC-authorized products. Its requirements for participating firms do not mean every tokenized fund has a secondary market, nor that every investor can access one. Read the fund’s offer documents and the venue’s terms together rather than treating “tokenized” as a single legal or operational structure.
A practical check before you rely on an exit
- Open the current offering documents and dealing procedures. Confirm that the version applies to your share class, jurisdiction, and investor category.
- Write down each supported route separately. Record whether you can redeem with the fund, transfer to an eligible holder, or trade through a named secondary venue. Do not infer one route from the existence of another.
- Confirm who may receive or buy the shares. Check allowlisting, investor eligibility, transfer-agent approval, and any platform access restrictions.
- Map the timing from request to completion. Note the dealing cutoff, NAV calculation, register-update process, settlement, and payment timing. Distinguish a token transaction from completion under the official register or redemption process.
- Compare the relevant prices and costs. For redemption, identify how NAV is calculated and whether a fee can apply. For a transfer or trade, identify the agreed or market price and any applicable transaction charges.
- Find the stress provisions. Locate the fund’s fee, gate, delay, and suspension powers and the circumstances in which they may be used.
- Verify that the market is operating now. If relying on a secondary venue, check current product availability, actual access, and whether there are buyers or market makers—not just a plan or permission to launch one.
If any essential point is unclear, ask the fund administrator, transfer agent, or platform to identify the governing provision and explain what event completes the transaction. The reviewed prospectuses and regulator materials are examples, not individualized financial advice; your own fund’s current documents control.
Bottom line
If the fund cannot sell its assets readily, a token does not guarantee that you can cash out before the fund’s liquidity improves. You may be able to request redemption under the fund’s terms, transfer shares to an eligible recipient, or sell through a functioning secondary market. Which route is available—and its price and timing—depends on the specific fund, transaction arrangements, and applicable jurisdiction.
