Losing access does not always mean losing the cryptocurrency. The outcome depends on who controls the keys and what remains available: an exchange login, a device, a local PIN, a recovery phrase, a private key, or a recovery method set up in advance. A custodial exchange may be able to restore your account after identity checks. In a self-custody wallet, the recovery phrase or private key is normally decisive; the wallet company cannot recreate a missing secret or move the assets for you.
First identify what kind of wallet you used
“Crypto wallet” can describe two very different arrangements. The recovery process starts by separating them.

Coinbase’s guidance on exchanges and self-custody wallets makes this custody distinction explicit. Ethereum.org’s wallet FAQ states that without a seed phrase or private keys, funds cannot be recovered. These are different security models, so an exchange password reset should never be treated as a universal wallet solution.

Before entering credentials anywhere, write down exactly what changed. The device may be missing while the phrase is safe; the app may be locked while the exchange account still works; or the phrase itself may be unavailable. Each case has a different answer.

You lost a phone, computer, or wallet app
A device is usually a container for wallet software, not the cryptographic ownership itself. If you still have the correct recovery phrase, install the same wallet or another wallet that officially supports that phrase format, then use its restore or import option. Follow the provider’s instructions for selecting the correct account and supported assets.
MetaMask distinguishes its local password from its Secret Recovery Phrase. The local password unlocks that particular installation; the phrase restores the wallet on another device. Losing the password can therefore be less serious than losing the phrase, provided the phrase was backed up securely.
Coinbase Wallet documents reimporting with a recovery phrase and, where enabled for that product, restoring from a Google Drive or iCloud backup. It also supports signing in through the original email, social, or passkey method in applicable configurations. Those options are product-specific, so do not assume that a cloud backup or social login exists in every wallet.
You forgot a local PIN or password
A PIN or password may protect only the local app installation. Look for the wallet’s official “restore,” “reimport,” or “forgot password” path rather than repeatedly guessing. If the wallet uses a recovery phrase, restoring the wallet normally creates a new local password on the replacement installation.

Never type the phrase into an unofficial recovery website or a form sent through a message. Use the wallet application downloaded from its official site or app store listing, and verify that the process is an ordinary restore flow rather than a request to “validate” or “unlock” your funds.
You lost access to an exchange email address or two-step verification
For a custodial account, start at the exchange’s official website or app and open its account-recovery workflow. Do not rely on links sent by people who claim to be support agents.
Recovery requirements differ by exchange. Coinbase’s documented process for lost email or two-step-verification access can include identity verification or approval by a trusted contact in eligible cases. Coinbase says its ID review can take up to 24 hours and may restrict sending funds for 24 hours after the review is completed. Those timings apply to that documented process, not to every exchange or every account.

You lost a recovery phrase or private key
This is the critical self-custody case. Search only the secure locations where you intentionally stored the backup: a written copy, an encrypted backup, or another method you created before the loss. Check for transcription mistakes, missing words, incorrect word order, and confusion between similarly named wallets.
A phrase restores only the wallet it belongs to and only when the wallet implementation derives the relevant accounts and supports the assets you used. If an import appears to show an empty account, stop before creating transactions: you may have entered a different phrase, selected a different account or network, or used a wallet that does not expose the same account format.
Ethereum.org says plainly: “Without your seed phrase or private keys, your funds cannot be recovered.” A wallet provider can explain its software, but it generally cannot reconstruct a missing self-custody secret or sign a transaction for you.

You lost a passkey or use a smart-wallet design
Some smart wallets have a separate recovery design rather than a conventional single seed phrase. Coinbase’s Smart Wallet guidance says its recovery phrase must be generated while the original passkey still works. That phrase can then be used to add a new passkey. If the original passkey is already unavailable and no phrase or other signer remains, creating the recovery phrase afterward is not possible.

Changing signers in that product incurs network fees once for each chain in use. The fee is a blockchain transaction cost, not a universal wallet-recovery charge. This mechanism is specific to the smart-wallet product and should not be assumed to exist in standard self-custody wallets.

- Classify the account. Determine whether the assets were held by an exchange or in a self-custody wallet. Check the app or account name, but do not infer custody from the word “wallet” alone.
- List the credential that remains. Note whether you still have the device, local password or PIN, recovery phrase, private key, passkey, email address, social login, or two-step-verification method.
- Use only the official recovery flow. Reach support from the provider’s own website or app. Ignore direct messages, search-ad links that look suspicious, and unsolicited “recovery” offers.
- Restore without moving funds first. After a self-custody import, confirm the expected address on the correct network and verify that the wallet supports the assets before signing a transaction.
- Complete identity checks carefully. For an exchange, submit documents only through the provider’s authenticated recovery page. Record the case number and any stated hold period.
- Secure the restored access. Once access returns, create a new local password where appropriate, enable available multi-factor protection, and make a durable offline backup of the recovery material.
What cannot be recovered
There is no central “reset” button for a self-custody private key. If every copy of the phrase and private key is gone, every configured recovery method is unavailable, and no still-authorized device or signer remains, the blockchain will continue to show the address and its balance but you will not be able to authorize a transfer.
A backup product can preserve an existing phrase for the future; it cannot discover a phrase that has already been lost. Likewise, buying a hardware wallet after losing the phrase does not restore the old wallet. A new device can protect a newly created wallet, but it has no authority over the old address unless you can import the old key material or use an existing recovery path.
How to recognize recovery scams
People who publicly describe a wallet problem are common targets for fake support accounts. Bitcoin.org’s “Avoid Scams” guidance warns that no legitimate firm offers guaranteed cryptocurrency recovery. Treat the following as stop signs:
- A person asks for your seed phrase, private key, backup code, or passkey.
- A supposed support agent asks you to paste secret words into a website, chat, or online form.
- Someone requests remote control of your computer or phone to “recover” the wallet.
- A service promises guaranteed recovery of lost or stolen coins in exchange for an upfront fee.
- A message creates urgency, threatens account closure, or directs you away from the provider’s normal help center.
Legitimate support can explain a product’s documented steps, but it does not need your signing secret. If you have already exposed a phrase or private key, assume the wallet is compromised: move remaining assets to a newly generated wallet from a clean device, if you still can, and do not reuse the exposed phrase.
Recovery paths compared

After you regain access: make the next loss survivable
- Keep at least one offline, legible copy of the recovery phrase in a secure location that you can reach during a device failure.
- Consider a durable metal backup plate for a phrase you still possess; it is a storage accessory, not a recovery service.
- Do not photograph the phrase, store it in ordinary cloud notes, or email it to yourself unless you fully understand the security consequences.
- Test the backup procedure with a small amount or a watch-only check before relying on it for larger holdings.
- Document which wallet type you use, which networks and accounts matter, and which recovery methods were configured.
- For exchange accounts, keep the email address and two-step-verification recovery options current and save the provider’s official support route.
The central rule is simple: an exchange may be able to verify you and restore an account, while a self-custody wallet can be restored only with the key material or recovery mechanism that controls it. Knowing which of those two situations you face prevents wasted time and makes it easier to reject dangerous promises.
