A cracked iPhone XR back can expose you to sharp glass and means you should no longer rely on the phone’s original water resistance. Keep it dry, avoid handling loose fragments, and arrange an assessment by a qualified repair provider. Apple warns against using an iPhone with cracked glass because it may cause injury.
What a cracked iPhone XR back can mean
Broken glass can cause injury
Cracks may leave sharp or loose fragments. Apple’s safety guidance says, “Don’t use iPhone with cracked glass, as it may cause injury.” If the damage exposes loose glass, stop handling the phone and avoid continued use. A case or tape may help contain fragments temporarily, but it does not repair the glass or make the phone safe.

Do not count on water resistance
Apple lists iPhone XR among models tested for splash, water, and dust resistance under controlled conditions. Apple also says resistance is not permanent and may decrease with normal wear, and advises avoiding impacts and disassembly. Its guidance does not specify how a particular crack affects resistance, so treat a damaged phone as vulnerable to liquid and keep it dry.

Wireless charging behavior is not established
The available guidance does not establish whether a specific crack will disable Qi wireless charging. Do not assume either that wireless charging is unaffected or that the crack has made it unusable; have the phone assessed if charging is a concern.

What to do now
- Check for immediate hazards. If the back has sharp or loose fragments, stop using the phone and avoid direct contact with the damaged area. If the phone or battery appears damaged, discontinue use: Apple warns that suspected device or battery damage can lead to overheating or injury.
- Keep it away from liquid. Do not rely on the XR’s original water-resistance rating after physical damage. Avoid wet environments while you arrange service.
- If it got wet, disconnect cables. Apple advises unplugging cables after liquid exposure and not charging until the phone is completely dry. Its guidance says to allow at least five hours before cable charging and to ensure the device is dry before placing it on a compatible wireless charger. These are liquid-handling instructions, not evidence that a cracked back by itself causes charging problems. See Apple’s liquid-exposure and drying guidance.
- Arrange a repair assessment. Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or choose another suitably qualified repair provider. Ask what repair method applies to an iPhone XR in your location, whether the phone has additional damage, and what service terms and warranty apply.
