The token and the underlying asset are not automatically erased, but the normal path for burning, transferring, reconciling, valuing, and paying out can become impracticable. Your actual rights depend on the asset’s offering documents, token terms, service agreements, and applicable law.
What “network unavailable” means in a tokenized asset
Redemption is rarely one blockchain transaction. It is usually a coordinated process involving several technical and financial systems. A holder may need to submit a valid request, transfer a token to an issuer or authorized intermediary, have the token burned, reconcile platform and transfer-agent records, liquidate or deliver the underlying asset, and receive cash or another asset through a bank or custody network.

An outage at any indispensable point can stop the complete transaction. The underlying asset’s blockchain may be functioning while the separate token network is halted. Conversely, the token may transfer normally while a custodian, transfer agent, bank wire system, or settlement counterparty is unavailable.

Because these dependencies are linked, a healthy blockchain does not guarantee a completed redemption.

What usually happens during an outage
- Transfers or delivery attempts stall. If the relevant chain cannot confirm transactions, a holder or intermediary may be unable to deposit the token, deliver the underlying asset, or send the token to the address required for redemption. A request might remain unconfirmed rather than be permanently rejected.
- The issuer or agent evaluates whether the request is practicable. Product documents commonly give an issuer discretion to postpone settlement, reject an order that is not in proper form, or suspend creations and redemptions during an emergency. The exact trigger and decision-maker differ by instrument.
- Other settlement legs may wait. An asset sale, token burn, custody transfer, or bank payment can each be a separate bottleneck. Completing one step does not oblige the other participants to finish while a required rail is unavailable.
- New orders may be limited. An issuer can stop accepting creation or redemption requests, impose a temporary queue, or process only orders that can be completed under the remaining infrastructure. A platform may also restrict transfers to approved addresses while records are reconciled.
- Holders receive notice through the channels specified for that product. Those channels can include a trust or issuer website, a prospectus supplement, an exchange notice, or a regulatory filing. A notice may describe the affected service without promising a universal restart date.
These are operational possibilities, not an automatic sequence for every token. Read the instrument’s governing documents to determine which powers actually exist.
Can you redeem while a blockchain is down?
Sometimes, but only if the outage does not affect a required step or the issuer has an approved alternative. A cash-only route, a different settlement network, manual processing, or an authorized intermediary might allow some redemptions to proceed. Those alternatives must be stated or supported by the product’s contracts and operating arrangements; a holder cannot assume that a substitute chain or payment method is available.
Three common contract outcomes

Suspension does not by itself prove that redemption rights have disappeared. It means the contractual process is paused or altered under the authority granted to the issuer or its agents. Whether a delayed request retains its place, must be resubmitted, or is cancelled is product-specific.

Why the token and underlying asset can depend on different networks
A tokenized representation may be issued on one blockchain while the asset it represents is recorded or settled elsewhere. A 2026 SEC-filed Solana trust disclosure describes tokenized shares whose additional operations include minting and burning on Ethereum and reconciling platform records with transfer-agent records. The filing warns that disruption to Ethereum, the platform, or an allowlist could prevent timely minting, burning, or transfer.
That example demonstrates a design pattern, not a rule for all tokenized assets. Before assuming that a Solana outage, an Ethereum outage, or any other chain outage is decisive, identify every network named in the product’s documents and determine which one is used for each step.
What happens to price and liquidity
Many tokenized products rely on authorized participants or other intermediaries to exchange tokens for underlying assets. That creation-and-redemption activity normally gives professional traders a way to arbitrage a market price back toward the value of the underlying holdings. If redemptions are suspended, that mechanism can weaken or disappear.

- The token or an exchange-traded wrapper may trade at a premium to its underlying value if buyers cannot obtain new units through creation.
- It may trade at a discount if holders cannot redeem for the underlying asset or cash.
- Bid-ask spreads can widen because market makers face greater inventory and settlement risk.
- Volume can fall even while price volatility increases.
- A displayed reference value may become less useful if the normal pricing source or valuation process is also disrupted.
These are disclosed risks, not predictions of a particular price move. The direction and size of any premium or discount depend on supply, demand, the outage’s scope, and the product’s valuation rules.
What the product documents should tell you
The Basel Committee’s 2021 consultative material on crypto-assets with stabilization mechanisms says arrangements should clearly define redemption rights, the redeemer’s obligations, the redemption timeframe, the assets exchanged, and how redemption value is calculated. It also highlights operational resilience, third-party risk, data integrity, and related controls. That material is governance guidance, not a personal promise that a particular investor can redeem on demand.
For a specific token, examine these documents before relying on a redemption assumption:

- Offering document and supplements: Look for emergency, force-majeure, market-disruption, suspension, postponement, and valuation clauses.
- Token terms or smart-contract documentation: Identify who can mint or burn, whether transfers are permissioned, and what happens if a contract is paused.
- Service-provider agreements and disclosures: Check dependencies on custodians, administrators, transfer agents, platforms, and payment banks.
- Redemption procedure: Confirm who may submit an order—every holder, an authorized participant, or another intermediary—and whether minimum sizes or cut-off times apply.
- Fallback provisions: Search for cash alternatives, another settlement route, manual processing, or in-kind delivery.
- Notice and resumption terms: Determine where updates will appear and whether the documents promise a deadline or merely say processing will resume when practicable.
- Valuation language: Find out which price source applies when the normal market, oracle, exchange, or asset network is unavailable.
A product-specific example of suspension language
In a 2026 SEC-filed Solana trust disclosure, the contract states: “The Trust may, in its discretion, suspend the right of creation or redemption or may postpone the redemption or creation settlement date”. This is an example of a contractual power for that trust. It is not a blanket rule for every tokenized asset, and it does not establish how long a suspension will last for another product.
Another SEC-filed trust disclosure describes delayed proceeds as deliverable as soon as practicable after the issue is resolved under that trust’s liquidity policy, with notices through specified channels. That timetable and notice method should not be generalized to unrelated instruments.

What to do if your redemption is delayed
- Check the official status notice. Use the issuer, trust, platform, or administrator channel named in the documents. Avoid relying on social-media claims or an exchange’s generic outage banner.
- Record your order details. Save the submission time, wallet address, transaction hash, confirmation status, quantity, and any reference number. This evidence helps determine whether the request was accepted, pending, or never received.
- Do not repeatedly resubmit without instructions. Duplicate requests can create separate queues, fees, or conflicting instructions. Ask whether the original order remains valid.
- Confirm which component failed. Ask whether the issue concerns the token chain, underlying asset, allowlist, transfer agent, custodian, valuation source, or bank payment rail.
- Ask for the governing rule, not a forecast. Request the clause that authorizes suspension or postponement, the conditions for resumption, and the treatment of pending orders.
- Keep custody and security controls unchanged. Do not disclose private keys or send assets to an address supplied through an unverified message claiming to offer emergency recovery.
- Escalate through the formal complaint route. If the issuer does not answer within the stated service process, use the administrator, broker, exchange, or regulator contact described in the product documents.
How recovery and settlement may unfold
Once the failed component is restored, the issuer may first reconcile records, validate queued orders, and confirm that prices and eligibility data are reliable. It may then resume creations and redemptions, process pending requests in a stated order, or require new instructions. A blockchain showing new blocks is not necessarily enough; the platform, transfer agent, custodian, and payment bank may need to complete their own checks.
There is no universal outage duration, recovery deadline, or fallback route established across tokenized assets. “As soon as practicable,” “following resolution,” and similar language can leave timing dependent on technical restoration, reconciliation, liquidity, legal restrictions, and the availability of counterparties. Treat a specific deadline as real only when the product’s current documents expressly promise one.
Common misconceptions
“The token is frozen forever.”
An outage can block transfers or redemption temporarily, but it does not automatically extinguish the asset or establish that the issuer has repudiated its obligations. The contract, legal structure, and subsequent notices control.
“The underlying blockchain is online, so redemption must work.”
Redemption can still fail at the token network, transfer agent, allowlist, custodian, reconciliation layer, valuation source, or bank rail.

“A different wallet or bridge will solve it.”
Moving a token through an unapproved route may violate transfer restrictions or create loss without satisfying the issuer’s redemption procedure. Use only methods authorized by the product documents.
“A suspension guarantees the market price will fall.”
A halt can produce either a premium or a discount, depending on which side of the creation-and-redemption mechanism is constrained and how market participants respond.
Bottom line for holders
An unavailable redemption or settlement network can interrupt the transaction chain, permit a contractual delay or suspension, and separate a token’s traded price from the value of its underlying asset. It does not by itself determine whether you will ultimately receive cash or assets. To assess your position, identify every required system, read the instrument’s suspension and valuation clauses, preserve your order records, and follow only the issuer’s verified notices and procedures.
