If a stablecoin loses its peg, its market price moves away from the value it is designed to track. You may see a discount, trading halts, withdrawal delays or redemption limits, but a price below the peg does not by itself prove that the issuer is insolvent—or that you can redeem directly at the target value. The outcome depends on the token’s reserves, legal redemption promise, your eligibility, the platform holding it and the rules in your jurisdiction.
Recovery is possible when confidence, liquidity and redemption channels return, but it is never automatic. Verify the exact token, issuer terms and platform notices before deciding whether to hold, trade or seek redemption.

What “losing the peg” actually means
A stablecoin is designed to track a reference value, commonly a national currency. A depeg occurs when the token’s secondary-market price departs from that target. The quoted price on an exchange is a market price created by buyers and sellers; it is not necessarily the amount the issuer must pay every holder at that moment.
The distinction matters because three separate questions are often collapsed into one:

| Question | What it concerns | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| What is the token trading for? | Secondary-market liquidity and sentiment on an exchange or other venue. | A discount can appear even while an issuer still has reserves, or it can signal deeper stress if confidence and liquidity keep deteriorating. |
| What legal claim does a holder have? | The issuer’s contractual or statutory obligation, the assets backing the token and who is entitled to claim them. | A market quote does not establish the strength, priority or availability of that claim. |
| Can this holder redeem now? | Eligibility, identity checks, account status, fees, processing windows, daily limits, suspensions and the route used. | Retail users commonly interact with an exchange or platform rather than the issuer, so trading, withdrawal and direct redemption may have different rules. |
A temporary discount can close if buyers return and arbitrage works. A persistent or widening discount can indicate that redemptions are constrained, reserves are questioned, banking relationships are under pressure or market participants no longer trust the arrangement. No single price movement identifies the cause.
What happens to a holder during a depeg?
Your quoted balance can fall immediately
If you hold the token on an exchange, the platform will usually mark it at the current market quote. A token intended to be worth one unit of the reference currency can therefore show a lower fiat value even though the number of tokens in your account has not changed. Selling at that quote realizes the market loss.
Trading and withdrawals may diverge
A venue may continue to display a market while pausing deposits, withdrawals or conversions. It may also impose its own maintenance window, risk controls or limits. The venue’s status is separate from the issuer’s redemption policy. Read both before moving funds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDirect redemption may be unavailable to you
An issuer can restrict redemption to verified customers, approved institutions, residents of certain jurisdictions or accounts that meet minimum amounts. Some holders have no direct issuer relationship because they acquired the token through a platform. A depeg therefore does not answer the practical question, “Can I redeem at par?”
Emergency measures can reduce immediate options
Depending on the legal regime and token category, a recovery plan may include redemption fees, daily limits or a temporary suspension. These steps can protect remaining liquidity while making it harder for an individual holder to exit immediately.
Why a stablecoin can break its peg
Run dynamics and thin liquidity
When many holders sell or request redemption at once, market depth can disappear. A small order may then move the price substantially. The Bank for International Settlements has identified poor reserve management and insufficiently liquid assets as sources of run risk. Large redemption requests can force an issuer or its intermediaries to sell assets quickly, potentially widening the discount.

Questions about reserves or custodians
Confidence can weaken when holders cannot determine what backs the token, how liquid those assets are, who holds them or who has a legally enforceable claim. A reserve disclosure is evidence to assess, not a promise that every holder can receive immediate cash in every circumstance.
Banking and issuer stress
Exposure to a bank, custodian or payment partner can transmit stress to the token. The European Systemic Risk Board has described doubts about a bank holding an issuer’s deposits, together with large redemption requests, as potential depegging pressures.
Operational and governance failures
Smart-contract incidents, inaccurate reporting, weak controls, outages or unclear decision-making can damage confidence even when reserves exist. The BIS also identifies operational incidents and weak governance as contributors to run risk.
Illustrative case: USDC in March 2023
The ESRB cites USDC’s loss of its dollar peg during the Silicon Valley Bank crisis as an example of banking exposure and market confidence interacting. That episode demonstrates one pathway to a depeg; it does not establish that every stablecoin will have the same trigger, duration or recovery.
How to check whether redemption is really available
Use this sequence for the exact token and account involved. It is a verification process, not individualized financial or legal advice.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Identify the asset precisely. Record the token’s full name, ticker, contract address and network, plus the venue where it is held. Wrapped, bridged or similarly named tokens may not carry the same issuer relationship or redemption claim.
- Locate the issuer’s current redemption policy. Check who may redeem, whether an account or identity verification is required, minimum or maximum amounts, accepted currencies, fees and the stated processing window.
- Read incident notices and status updates. Look for announcements about banking access, reserve transfers, maintenance, withdrawal pauses, redemption queues, daily limits or suspensions. Use the issuer’s official channels and note the publication time.
- Review backing and disclosures. Examine the latest reserve composition and any assurance or disclosure describing custody, liquidity and publication frequency. Under the U.S. requirements described below, covered permitted payment stablecoin issuers publish reserve composition monthly, but that disclosure does not guarantee instant retail access.
- Check the platform separately. Confirm whether your exchange or wallet supports trading, deposits, withdrawals or direct conversion for this exact token and network. Federal Register material notes that retail users generally interact with an exchange or platform rather than directly with an issuer.
- Compare the quote with the actual terms. A market price near the target does not prove that you can redeem immediately at par. Conversely, a discount does not by itself prove insolvency. Compare the executable price, fee schedule, queue or limit and settlement time.
- Preserve evidence. Save the token identifier, account and transaction records, platform status messages, issuer notices and timestamps. These records help when contacting support, an issuer or a relevant authority.
Can the price return to the peg?
It can, but there is no guarantee. A recovery toward the target value generally requires enough confidence and liquidity for buyers to return, functioning transfer rails and a credible path to redemption or arbitrage. If those channels remain open, a trader can buy the discounted token and seek redemption at the target value, which tends to narrow the gap. That mechanism fails when redemption is unavailable, delayed, too costly or limited to parties the trader cannot access.

Recovery can be impaired by illiquid reserves, operational capacity limits, a bank or issuer under stress, or emergency measures. A market quote may improve before an individual holder’s redemption request is processed, or it may remain depressed while the issuer works through a queue.
Issuer recovery measures can help and hurt
An issuer may publish reserve information, arrange additional liquidity, restore banking access, improve communications or reopen a redemption channel. Those actions can support confidence. The same issuer or regulator may also impose fees, daily caps or a temporary suspension to slow outflows. Such measures can preserve the arrangement while reducing a holder’s immediate flexibility.
What EU MiCA recovery and orderly redemption rules do—and do not—mean
For covered EU asset-referenced tokens, MiCA Article 46 requires a recovery plan whose options can include liquidity fees on redemptions, daily redemption limits and suspension of redemptions. Article 47 addresses an orderly redemption plan in specified failure circumstances where the competent authority determines that an issuer is unable, or likely to become unable, to fulfil its obligations.

These provisions apply according to the token’s category, issuer and supervisory scope. They do not govern every stablecoin worldwide, and they do not promise that a retail holder can redeem immediately at the target value during a market event.
What U.S. requirements can tell you
Section 12 U.S.C. § 5903, in statutory text displayed as current to September 9, 2026, requires covered permitted payment stablecoin issuers to maintain identifiable reserves on an at-least-1:1 basis, disclose a redemption policy with clear procedures for timely redemption and fees, and publish monthly reserve composition. “At least 1:1” is a legal threshold for the covered issuers and regime; it is not a performance statistic or a guarantee that every token holder has a direct, immediate claim.
The statute’s applicability depends on whether the issuer and token fall within the covered category. New York Department of Financial Services guidance applies to supervised U.S.-dollar-backed stablecoins, not automatically to every token available to a New York resident or every global issuer. Always match the rule to the issuer, token, account and jurisdiction.

Federal Reserve Governor Michael S. Barr stated in an October 16, 2025 speech: “Stablecoins will only be stable if they can be reliably and promptly redeemed at par in a range of conditions, including during stress in the market that can put pressure on the value of even otherwise liquid government debt, and during episodes of strain on the individual issuer or its related entities.” The statement describes the condition a robust arrangement should meet; it is not a guarantee for a particular token.
How to compare two stablecoins or two redemption routes
If you are deciding between tokens or between direct and platform-based exit routes, compare the items that determine what you can actually recover:
| Comparison area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Reserves | What assets back the token? How liquid are they? Who has custody? How often are composition and assurance information published? |
| Legal claim | Who is the creditor or beneficiary? Is the claim direct, indirect or limited to a particular class of holder? |
| Eligibility | Can an individual in your jurisdiction open the required account and pass identity checks? Are minimum amounts or institutional restrictions stated? |
| Execution terms | What fees, processing times, daily limits, queue rules and suspension provisions apply? |
| Access route | Will you redeem with the issuer, trade on a platform, withdraw on-chain or use another intermediary? Which party controls each step? |
| Operational dependencies | Which banks, custodians, networks and governance bodies must remain available, and who publishes incident updates? |
| Regulatory scope | Which token category and jurisdiction does the cited law cover? Does it apply to this issuer and account, or only to a narrower class? |
Common mistakes during a depeg
- Assuming every dollar-priced token is interchangeable. Tickers can look similar while contracts, networks, issuers and claims differ.
- Treating a reserve report as a withdrawal guarantee. The composition and liquidity of reserves must be considered alongside the redemption policy, eligibility and operational capacity.
- Confusing a platform balance with an issuer claim. An exchange may be your counterparty for trading even when the issuer controls direct redemption.
- Ignoring fees and settlement time. A nominal redemption at par can produce a lower net result after fees, delays, network costs or a queue.
- Relying on social-media price screenshots. Use the executable quote and official status notices for the exact venue and network.
- Sending funds to an unsupported network. A withdrawal pause or network mismatch can create a separate loss from the depeg itself; confirm the supported chain before transferring.
- Assuming a recovery announcement is final. Check whether the notice describes a plan, a limited pilot, a restored service or a fully open redemption channel.
A practical decision framework
If you need liquidity soon
First establish whether you can complete a verified redemption or withdrawal within the stated time. If that route is closed, the only available market exit may carry a discount and platform risk. Do not represent a market sale as issuer redemption.
If you can tolerate delay
Monitor the issuer’s reserve and incident disclosures, platform status and any announced limits. Keep records and reassess when a specific redemption channel is confirmed rather than relying on a general promise that the peg will return.
If you are considering buying the discount
The apparent spread is compensation for uncertainty about redemption, liquidity, timing and loss. Before treating it as arbitrage, verify that you are eligible to redeem, that the issuer accepts the exact token, that fees and limits leave a viable margin and that settlement rails are operating.

What authorities and issuers are expected to provide
The Financial Stability Board’s recommendations call for global stablecoin arrangements to give users a robust legal claim and guarantee timely redemption. In practice, that means a reader should be able to identify the responsible issuer or arrangement, understand the redemption procedure and see the conditions that could delay or restrict it. If those details are missing or contradictory, treat the uncertainty itself as a material risk.
Rules, reserve composition, platform support and redemption terms can change quickly. Recheck the exact documents and notices immediately before acting; a statement that was accurate during one phase of a depeg may not describe the current queue, fee or eligibility status.
Bottom line
A lost peg is a warning that the market’s price, the issuer’s promise and your practical access to redemption may no longer line up. Separate those three questions, verify the token and venue, read the current terms and account for limits, fees and delays. A return to the target value is possible when confidence and liquidity recover, but no source or rule guarantees that outcome for every stablecoin or holder.
