If a sleep-sounds stream loses its internet connection, it may buffer and then stop or show an error once the player runs out of audio stored locally. There is no universal outage time or guaranteed auto-reconnect behavior: what happens depends on the service, device, and local buffer. A downloaded track or a device’s built-in sounds can keep playing without the stream’s internet connection.
Why a 24/7 stream can still stop
“24/7” describes the intended availability of the audio, not immunity to a network outage. When a service sends sound over the internet, the connection is part of the playback chain. Sleep Jar, for example, says third-party audio content on Amazon Echo is streamed over the internet. If that connection fails, playback can continue only while audio already buffered on the device remains available.
A brief interruption may first cause buffering; a longer one may lead to silence or an error. The timing and whether playback resumes are specific to the app and device. The available service guidance does not establish a universal buffer duration or automatic-reconnection rule, so do not count on a stream restarting by itself.
Streaming, downloads, and built-in sounds are different

Some smart speakers also have their own ambient-sound feature. Google documents supported ambient sounds that can continue for up to 24 hours unless stopped, with a sleep timer duration of up to 24 hours. That documentation applies to Google’s own supported feature; it does not mean audio cast or streamed from another app will survive an internet loss.

What to check before relying on overnight playback
- Identify the source: a live online stream, a downloaded track, or a device’s own sound library.
- If you need audio without internet, use the service’s documented offline feature and verify that the intended tracks are actually downloaded. Sleepiest specifically recommends downloading the track ahead of time when a connection may be poor.
- Check power separately from internet. A network outage and a power outage are different failure points, and a local sound device still needs a working power source.
- If using a smart speaker, distinguish its built-in ambient sounds from audio being streamed or cast by a separate app.
What to do when the sound stops
- Check whether other apps or web pages work. Spotify recommends this as a way to tell whether the problem may be the internet connection rather than Spotify itself. If other services are also offline, check Wi-Fi or contact your internet provider as appropriate.
- Restore the connection. Spotify’s troubleshooting guidance includes restarting Wi-Fi and the router. After the connection returns, reopen or resume the audio service rather than assuming it has reconnected automatically.
- If only one app is affected, use that app’s playback troubleshooting. YouTube Music recommends checking for a strong data or Wi-Fi connection; its general playback guidance also suggests restarting the device and clearing the app cache.
- For future outages, prepare a local fallback. Download the intended audio in advance if your app supports offline playback, or use a device with built-in sounds. Verify its power source and runtime for your intended use.
When a local sound machine makes sense
If uninterrupted audio matters more than access to a changing online catalog, a sound machine with built-in sounds avoids dependence on an internet stream. Check its actual controls, power arrangement, sound selection, and runtime rather than assuming all models work the same way.
Hatch describes its Rest Go as an unconnected sound machine that needs no app, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth, and lists ten built-in sounds. Hatch’s support page, updated June 25, 2025, specifies up to 15 hours of battery use depending on usage; that is the manufacturer’s specification for Rest Go, not an independently measured result or a runtime claim for sound machines generally. It provides its own sounds, not your particular online stream.
