The steps are not identical at every school: the institution’s policy, the allegation, and the circumstances shape what happens next. You can ask about supportive measures even if you have not filed a formal complaint.
What happens when a college receives a report?
Information about an alleged sexual assault can reach a school from the student, a parent or another responsible person, an employee, or another source. The school should explain relevant options and its responsibilities, but receiving a report does not mean every case automatically follows the same formal investigation path.

The response can depend on the allegation, who reported it, the students’ ages, the institution’s structure, and other circumstances. A report, a request for help, and a formal complaint are not necessarily the same thing. Ask the Title IX coordinator which process the school is considering and what choices are available to you.
Can you get support without filing a formal complaint?
Yes. The Title IX coordinator should promptly discuss supportive measures with the complainant whether or not a formal complaint has been filed, and explain how to file one. These measures are intended to address needs related to access to education and campus participation; they do not by themselves determine responsibility.

- Counseling services
- Campus safety arrangements

How does the school’s grievance process work?
A campus grievance procedure is the institution’s internal process for handling a sex-discrimination complaint. The college’s current policy is the best guide to its actual stages, contacts, deadlines, evidence procedures, and any appeal provisions. Policies and implementation can differ, so do not assume that another school’s process applies to yours.

Relevant safeguards identified by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) include notice of the procedures, an adequate and impartial inquiry, an opportunity to provide witnesses and other evidence, reasonably prompt timeframes, and trained employees. The precise sequence and the way a school handles interviews or shares information depend on its policy and the case.
What does an investigator do?
An investigation should be prompt, impartial, and thorough. Investigators may gather accounts and relevant information, including material from the people involved and potential witnesses. The process is meant to examine relevant information—not to presume that a report proves or disproves an allegation.

There is no single interview or evidence sequence that can be assumed for every college. The school’s policy should explain what participants can submit, whether and how they can review information, and how the institution reaches a decision. Ask the investigator or coordinator about those steps and any deadlines that apply to you.
Could there be a hearing?
A hearing or another decision stage may follow under the procedure that applies. The Department of Education says the 2020 Title IX regulations are currently the basis for OCR enforcement after a federal court vacated the 2024 Final Rule on January 9, 2025. Because regulations and litigation can change, check the Department’s current information and your college’s policy for the rules in effect when your case is handled.

Under the 2020 rule text, postsecondary live hearings use cross-examination conducted by the parties’ advisors. The decision-maker must not rely on a statement from a party or witness who does not submit to cross-examination. How a particular institution implements its procedure should be confirmed in its current policy.
How is an OCR complaint different from a campus complaint?
Contacting OCR is a separate route from using a college’s grievance process. OCR handles complaints about discrimination under federal civil-rights laws and describes itself as a neutral fact-finder, not an advocate for either party. Its process has its own intake rules; filing with OCR is not the same as asking a college to investigate under campus policy.

| Route | Who handles it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Campus grievance process | Your institution, under its own policy | Coordinator, process stages, deadlines, evidence procedures, and appeal provisions |
| OCR complaint | The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights | Current filing instructions and the deadline for your situation |
OCR’s general complaint-filing deadline is 180 calendar days after the discrimination, according to the Department’s complaint-process guidance. Consult OCR’s current instructions about the deadline and whether any exception or other requirement applies to your circumstances.
What should you ask the Title IX coordinator?
To understand the process without assuming a particular outcome, ask practical questions and request the current policy in writing.
- What options are available, including options short of a formal complaint?
- What supportive measures can be requested, and how are they arranged?
- What are the next steps, who will handle them, and what timeframes apply?
- How can you provide relevant information or identify witnesses?
- What does the policy say about access to information, a hearing, and any appeal?
If you are considering the separate OCR route, review its current filing instructions rather than assuming that campus deadlines or steps apply.
