You enter a castle-themed venue, look around the Hall of Arms, take your assigned section in an arena, and eat a four-course banquet while six knights compete in a story set in Medieval Spain. The performance combines jousting, swordsmanship, hand-to-hand combat, horsemanship, and falconry, with the audience encouraged to cheer for its designated knight.
The practical details vary by Castle and package. Check the arrival and seating instructions in your confirmation email, allow about two hours for the overall visit, and tell staff about dietary or accessibility needs before the tournament begins.

The visit at a glance
Medieval Times presents dinner as part of a live tournament rather than as a separate restaurant meal followed by a show. The venue describes the experience as a boisterous, family-friendly event inspired by an 11th-century feast and tournament. The fictionalized setting is Medieval Spain, and guests become part of the spectacle by sitting in a color-coded section and supporting one of six competing knights.

1. Arrive at the Castle
Your confirmation email is the controlling source for door-opening and showtime instructions. Visitor pages for Toronto, Orlando, and Dallas describe gates opening 60 minutes before showtime, but that is location-specific guidance rather than a universal guarantee. Arriving when doors open gives you time to clear the entrance, look around, and ask about seating before the arena fills.

Arriving early is particularly useful for a first visit. You may need to collect tickets, resolve a split reservation, request an accessible place, or explain a dietary requirement. It also leaves time for the Hall of Arms instead of forcing you to choose between exploring and getting to your section on time. If your email gives a different arrival window, follow it rather than relying on another city’s schedule.
What to have ready
- Your ticket or confirmation email, including the order number if your party booked separately.
- Photo identification if an adult plans to buy alcohol.
- Any accessibility or dietary information you need staff to act on.
- The name of the purchaser and the complete reservation details if someone else in the party is checking in.
Do not bring outside food or beverages, balloons, or weapons of any kind. The weapon rule includes toy weapons, even though medieval toy weapons may be sold as souvenirs inside the venue. Leave bulky or prohibited items in your vehicle rather than expecting an exception at the entrance.
2. Explore the Hall of Arms before the tournament
The Hall of Arms is the Castle’s pre-show gathering area. It is decorated with medieval objects and artifacts and provides a natural place to orient yourself before staff call guests into the arena. Depending on the location and your package, you may find a bar, gift shop, a pre-show knighting ceremony, or an opportunity to see show animals.
Recommended Free Tools
These extras are not identical at every Castle. Treat them as optional activities, not guaranteed parts of every ticket. If you want a photo, knighting, or animal encounter, ask the staff at your location when you arrive rather than assuming the same schedule applies elsewhere. A package that includes an add-on at one Castle may not include the same feature at another.
The Hall of Arms is also a practical waiting area. Use the time to locate restrooms, check where your crown-color section will be called, and let staff know if a child or adult needs a quieter break before the louder arena portion. Keep your ticket information accessible until you have been directed to your seats.
3. How seating works
Seating is the detail most likely to differ between the general FAQ and a particular Castle. The general guidance describes first-come, first-served seating assigned according to package and group size. The Toronto visitor guide, by contrast, describes reserved seats and calls guests to the arena by crown color. Your confirmation email and the instructions from staff at check-in take priority over either general description.
If everyone is on one reservation
Have the whole party arrive together when possible. Staff can then match the reservation to the appropriate section and explain when that crown color is called. A larger group may not be placed exactly where it expects if the package or available seats limits the choices. Ask before entering the arena if you need to know whether the seats are fixed or selected at arrival.
If your group booked separate reservations
Bring the order numbers for every reservation and ask at check-in whether the party can sit together. The venue recommends this approach, but seats together depend on the package and remaining availability. Asking before the group is called into the arena gives staff the best chance to help. Do not assume that buying tickets for the same show automatically links the reservations.
Comparing ticket packages
When you compare packages, look beyond the headline price. Check the selected Castle’s description for seating benefits, included extras, meal terms, and any add-ons. Package names and inclusions can change by location, and a premium option does not necessarily use the same seating process described on another Castle’s page. If a benefit matters to you—such as a particular seat area, a pre-show activity, or a photo opportunity—confirm that it is included for your date rather than relying on a generic advertisement.

Accessible seating
The FAQ says you can select an accessible-seating option while buying tickets online or tell staff when you arrive. If you need a particular transfer arrangement, companion position, mobility space, or other accommodation, contact the selected Castle in advance so the staff can explain what is available for that performance. The Ontario accessibility policy, last reviewed December 28, 2023, describes broader accessible customer-service commitments and service-animal access at facilities open to the public, subject to applicable regulations.
Give the Castle specific information instead of only saying that you need an accessible seat. Explain whether you use a wheelchair or other mobility device, need an aisle or companion position, or require assistance moving from the entrance to the arena. Staff can then tell you what arrangements are possible. Requirements can differ with the building layout and the particular performance, so advance contact is the safest plan.

4. What you eat during the show
The standard ticket includes a four-course banquet served while the performance is under way. The usual menu is substantial rather than snack-sized, so plan to eat with one hand when the action permits and follow your server’s instructions during louder or darker portions of the show. Meal items can occasionally be substituted when supplies require it.
| Course or service | Typical offering | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Opening course | Garlic bread | Standard menu; substitutions are possible. |
| Soup | Tomato bisque | Ingredient details should be checked for allergies. |
| Main plate | Roasted chicken, sweet buttered corn, and herb-basted potatoes | Served as the main banquet course; availability can affect substitutions. |
| Dessert | Dessert, with fruit or Italian ice appearing in some dietary menus | Ask your server which option is being served. |
| Drinks | Coffee and two rounds of selected non-alcoholic beverages | Included beverage selection is limited to the venue’s stated choices. |
| Alcohol | Available for purchase from the bar to eligible adults | Photo ID is required; the minimum age is 21 in the United States and 19 in Canada. |
The meal is integrated into the performance, so courses may arrive while a contest or announcement is taking place. You do not need to stop watching to eat, but servers may ask you to wait briefly during a particularly active moment. If you have young children, consider how they will manage a full meal, arena noise, and a long period in one section.
Silverware is available on request. If you are celebrating, the venue offers cake by the slice; outside cakes and other outside food are not allowed unless the Castle gives you different written instructions. Ask about the cake option when you arrive so you know how it is handled with the banquet.
5. Dietary and allergy requests
Tell your server about a vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free meal when you are seated. It is better to make the request immediately than to wait until the standard plate arrives. The venue lists these alternatives:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- Vegetarian: the vegan choices, with warm pita bread added.
- Gluten-free: tomato bisque, hummus, vegetables, roasted chicken, corn, potatoes, and fruit or Italian ice.
Those descriptions identify the listed dishes, not a guarantee that every ingredient or preparation is free from cross-contact. For a serious allergy, consult the Castle’s current nutritional and allergen information and speak directly with staff before ordering. Menu substitutions can occur, so confirm what will actually be served on your date.
If several people in a reservation have different needs, tell the server which meal belongs to which guest. Keep in mind that the menu is designed for service during a show; staff may need a moment to confirm an alternative before the first course. Guests should not bring substitute food from home because outside food and beverages are prohibited.
6. What the tournament is like
The story and competition are designed to be watched from the arena while you eat. Six knights compete for the audience’s support in a series of tests rather than a single joust. The program can include:
Rank #3
- Includes: Robe; Yoke with hood; Cord waist tie
- Size: Men's Large/X-Large (42-46): Chest 44-46″, Waist 38-40″
- Brown
- Jousting on horseback.
- Swordsmanship and staged hand-to-hand combat.
- Horsemanship demonstrations.
- Falconry and other work with trained birds.
The audience is divided into crown-color sections, and cheers for your designated knight are part of the format. You can participate as much or as little as you like; there is no requirement to shout continuously. The production is family-friendly, but it is still a live combat-themed spectacle. Cheers, music, crowd prompts, and sudden action are part of the experience.
Because the action is live, the order and emphasis of events can vary with the production and show schedule. Do not expect a historical lecture or an unscripted sporting match. It is a theatrical tournament with trained performers, horses, and birds, presented as a story set in Medieval Spain.
Stroboscopic effects
The venue says the show uses stroboscopic effects. Anyone who is photosensitive or prone to migraines or seizures should consider that warning when deciding whether to attend and should ask the selected Castle for current details before booking. If a child is sensitive to loud noise, darkness, or flashing light, consider choosing a seat and arrival plan that makes it easy to take a break.
7. How long to allow
The official FAQ lists the performance running time as approximately 90 minutes. The same FAQ calls the visit a two-hour experience, while the broader experience page says it lasts “almost two hours.” Those pages do not define a precise timing split between the performance, entry, and post-show activities.
For planning purposes, reserve roughly two hours from the recommended arrival window through the end of the main experience, while treating the 90-minute figure as the approximate show itself. Add extra time if you want to browse the Hall of Arms, shop, eat slowly, or wait for photos. If you have a timed reservation later in the evening, include travel and parking time separately; the two-hour estimate describes the Castle experience, not your entire outing.
8. What to wear and bring
Casual clothing is appropriate. The Castles are indoors and climate-controlled, but the FAQ notes that some guests prefer a light sweater or jacket. Medieval clothing is optional; you do not need a costume to fit in. If you choose to dress up, keep the outfit comfortable for sitting through a meal and make sure it does not cover your full face or obstruct another guest’s view.
View and safety rules
- Do not wear a hat or headdress that blocks another guest’s view.
- Do not wear a mask or costume that covers your full face.
- Cameras are allowed, but flash photography is not.
- Leave all weapons at home, including toy weapons.
- Leave outside food, drinks, and balloons at home.
These rules matter even if the gift shop sells costumes or toy weapons. Merchandise sold inside does not create an exception for items brought through the entrance. A camera without flash is acceptable, but avoid standing or leaning into aisles to get a shot, and follow any instructions from staff around horses, birds, and performers.
9. Children and tickets
Children under three can be admitted free when they sit on an adult’s lap and eat from that adult’s plate. A child who needs a separate seat and meal requires a child-rate ticket. If you are bringing a toddler, decide in advance whether lap seating is realistic for the full performance and ask the Castle about any current ticketing conditions.
Young children may find the crowd participation exciting, but the combination of darkness, music, flashing effects, animals, and staged combat can be intense. Explain beforehand that the sword fights and jousting are part of a show. Identify where you can step out or take a break, and tell your server if a child needs extra time with the meal.

10. Alcohol and identification
Adults may purchase alcoholic drinks from the bar, subject to the laws of the country and province or state where the Castle operates. Bring photo ID if you intend to order. The venue states a minimum drinking age of 21 in the United States and 19 in Canada. Service can be refused when identification or legal eligibility is not established.
Alcohol is an optional purchase; the included beverage service consists of two rounds of selected non-alcoholic drinks, plus coffee. Do not bring your own beverages, including alcohol, into the Castle. If someone in your group is driving, plan accordingly before ordering.
11. What happens after the final event
The Hall of Arms and gift shop may remain open after the performance. The official show information says the Knights return to the Hall of Arms after the last show of the day for photos. The exact photo process, waiting time, and animal-safety rules vary by Castle, so ask staff whether a post-show opportunity is running on your date and follow the instructions around performers and animals.
Post-show photos are not a reason to delay your departure if you have a long journey or another reservation. Ask whether the Knights will return after your performance or only after the final show of the day. Keep pathways clear and follow staff directions when approaching performers or viewing animals.
12. A first-timer’s planning checklist
- Read the confirmation email. Note the showtime, door-opening time, Castle address, package name, and any seating instructions.
- Plan to arrive early. The Toronto, Orlando, and Dallas visitor pages use a 60-minute pre-show gate opening as an example; verify your own location.
- Bring order numbers. This is especially important when friends or family purchased separate reservations.
- Ask about seating immediately. Explain group, mobility, or companion needs before staff call sections into the arena.
- State dietary requirements when seated. Do not wait until the main course if you need a vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free meal.
- Pack lightly. A camera without flash is acceptable; food, beverages, balloons, and weapons are not.
- Prepare for the environment. Wear comfortable casual clothes, consider a light layer, and account for stroboscopic effects.
- Carry photo ID if buying alcohol. Age requirements differ between the United States and Canada.
- Allow about two hours overall. The main performance is approximately 90 minutes, with entry and optional activities taking additional time.
- Confirm extras locally. Knighthoods, animal encounters, reserved seating, post-show photos, and package inclusions can change by Castle and date.
13. Questions to ask before you go
A few direct questions can prevent the most common surprises. Ask the selected Castle when doors open for your performance, whether your seats are reserved or assigned at arrival, and how a group with separate order numbers should check in. Confirm whether a package includes any activity you specifically want, such as a knighting or photo opportunity.
If anyone has a serious allergy, mobility requirement, photosensitivity concern, or service animal, contact the Castle before travel rather than relying only on a general FAQ. Ask what documentation or advance notice is needed and whether the current menu differs from the standard list. These checks are especially important because schedules, packages, seating arrangements, and safety procedures can change.
What the experience is—and is not
Medieval Times is best understood as a combined meal and live tournament. You are not simply watching a stage play while dining in the background: the seating sections, crown colors, cheering, and knightly competition make the audience part of the event. At the same time, it is not a historically reconstructed medieval meal. The story is a family-oriented theatrical production set in Medieval Spain, served with a practical banquet and location-specific extras.
The most reliable way to avoid surprises is to separate the elements that are consistent—the four-course format, tournament-style action, and indoor Castle setting—from the elements that are local or changeable, including seating method, gate time, menu substitutions, package benefits, and post-show activities.
