Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAfter you report a stolen car, police can enter a stolen-vehicle alert and investigate if officers encounter it; you should also contact your insurer promptly to start a claim. A report does not guarantee that police will find the car or follow a fixed timetable. What happens next—including how a recovered car is released and whether insurance pays—depends on your location, the circumstances and your policy.
What to do immediately after reporting the theft
Follow your local police authority’s reporting instructions, then notify your insurer as soon as possible. Keep the police incident or crime reference number: insurers commonly ask for the police report or its reference when you open a claim.

Be ready to provide the vehicle’s registration or license plate, make, model, color and VIN if available. Also share the approximate time and location of the theft, anything you observed at the scene, and details of any tracking system. Tell police and your insurer if you have information that could help locate or identify the vehicle.

In the UK, GOV.UK says to tell the police and insurance company straight away; its guidance asks for the registration, make, model and color and says police will give a crime reference number. What police do after taking the report
A stolen-vehicle alert can help officers identify the car
A report may result in an alert associated with the vehicle’s registration, so officers who encounter it can check its status and investigate. New Zealand Police, for example, says it places a stolen alert against the registration provided; if officers come into contact with the vehicle, driver or passengers, they may investigate further. See the New Zealand Police stolen-vehicle FAQ.
A report is not a promise of a search or recovery date
Police procedures and investigative steps depend on the case and local practice. Do not assume detectives will immediately search a particular area, that every stolen car is continuously tracked, or that there is a standard point when an investigation ends. If you have new information—such as a possible sighting—give it to police and reference your report number.
NICB says its data show 35% of recovered stolen vehicles are recovered on the same day as the theft and 45% within two days. The cited NICB page does not state the data year, so these figures are not a current-year estimate or a guarantee about an individual case. Prompt reporting can help police act on identifying information, but recovery is never assured. See the NICB guidance on what to do if your car is stolen.

How to open an insurance claim
Contact your insurer promptly, provide the police reference number and ask what documents and next steps apply to your policy. Insurers may accept claims by phone, online or through an agent; the available channels depend on the insurer.
The type of coverage matters
In the United States, NICB describes comprehensive coverage as the type that covers theft. Liability and collision coverage alone do not provide theft coverage. The actual result depends on your policy’s terms, exclusions, deductible and applicable law, so check the policy or ask the insurer to explain the coverage in writing.
Settlement may depend on whether the car is found
An insurer may record the claim while recovery remains possible, then assess the vehicle’s condition if it is found. Depending on the damage and policy, the outcome may be a repair claim or a total-loss decision. There is no universal waiting period or payout amount: claim handling depends on the insurer’s procedures, the facts and governing law. NICB discusses those variables in its guide to theft-claim investigations.

If police recover your car
Find out who has control of the vehicle
Police or another authority may document the vehicle, investigate how it was used, or arrange to remove it if it is unsafe, obstructing a road or needs to be secured. Ask the police or recovery/impound authority:
Recommended Free Tools
- Where the vehicle is and who is responsible for its release.
- Whether it is being held as evidence and, if so, how that affects collection.
- What identification or paperwork you need to collect it.
- Whether towing, recovery or storage charges apply, and how to pay them.
- Whether your insurer wants to inspect the vehicle before you authorize repairs.
Do not assume you can drive it away immediately; the authority holding it can explain its condition and release requirements. Towing and storage rules differ by jurisdiction. For example, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) explains its vehicle-removal powers and charges. In Northern Ireland, PSNI says reasonable recovery expenses may be charged and storage charges become payable the day after the owner is told the vehicle is available. That rule is specific to Northern Ireland, not a general rule for other places.
Document the condition and coordinate with your insurer
Before repairs, ask the insurer whether it needs to inspect the car or receive photographs and recovery details. A claims investigation may include a recovery or condition report. Keep records of communications, damage and any charges so you can give the insurer the information it requests.

If the car is not recovered and the insurer pays
Once the insurer confirms a payout, ask what administrative steps apply where the vehicle is registered. In the UK, police notify DVLA about theft and recovery. If the insurer pays out, the keeper must tell DVLA the vehicle has been sold to the insurer. If you want to retain a personalized registration plate, deal with that before notifying DVLA. These are UK-specific requirements described in GOV.UK’s stolen-vehicle guidance; other jurisdictions have their own vehicle-registration procedures.
What varies by location and policy
The broad steps—report, share identifying details, notify the insurer and follow recovery instructions—are useful in many places, but the operational details are local. Reporting channels, the kind of reference number issued, how an alert is handled, who controls a recovered car, and any towing or storage charges can differ. Coverage, evidence requirements and claim decisions depend on the insurance policy and applicable law. For a specific case, follow the relevant police authority’s and holding facility’s instructions and confirm claim requirements directly with your insurer.
