What Happens After the Fifth Payment Retry? How to Escalate Stuck Payments

After five failed payment attempts, stop treating another automatic retry as the default. Move the payment into a defined recovery state: identify why it failed, tell the customer what action—if any—is needed, and apply the outcome your billing policy specifies. Five attempts is an example cutoff, not a universal rule imposed by payment providers.

Why there is no universal fifth-retry rule

Retry timing and limits vary by provider, payment method, failure reason, and merchant configuration. A “fifth retry” is therefore a policy choice for your product, not a standard shared by subscription services. Provider documentation illustrates how different the rules can be:

Provider and flow Documented retry behavior What can happen next
PayPal Subscriptions For the documented subscription flow, PayPal retries every five days, up to twice per billing cycle. PayPal’s guide If the second retry fails, PayPal counts it as a payment failure and adds the amount to the next cycle’s outstanding balance. A plan’s failure threshold can suspend the subscription. PayPal’s guide
Braintree Recurring Billing The merchant can configure retry intervals. If configured to continue, the system can retry once per billing cycle. Braintree’s recurring billing settings The merchant can cancel, keep retrying, or leave the subscription Past Due. The Past Due balance may grow as further billing cycles arrive. Braintree’s recurring billing settings
Adyen Auto Rescue For eligible refused or charged-back shopper-not-present transactions, Adyen schedules retries when it determines a later attempt has a chance of succeeding. Adyen Auto Rescue Webhooks report attempt results, further scheduling, and process completion. A payment link may be available after unsuccessful rescue if enabled. Adyen Auto Rescue
Adyen Pix recurring payments With a retry policy enabled, the documented Pix flow allows up to three retries and specifies conditions for the new billing date and original payment reference. Adyen Pix recurring payments This is a Pix-specific example, not a general Adyen retry limit. Adyen Pix recurring payments

These examples are not a performance comparison or a recommendation to copy one provider’s schedule. Confirm the behavior for the product, payment method, and configuration in your integration.

What to do when a payment keeps failing

A useful escalation process replaces a blind retry loop with a recorded decision and an explicit next step. The following sequence is an implementation pattern, not a provider-mandated standard.

#1 Best Overall
Square Terminal - Credit Card Machine to Accept All Payments | Mobile POS
  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
  1. Record the failure and update payment state. Store the provider’s response and update your system from authoritative API or webhook events, rather than assuming the result from the initial request is final.
  2. Classify the reason before scheduling another attempt. Payment failures can have different causes. PayPal’s failure-handling guide discusses funding problems, expired payment methods, risk decisions, and validation issues, which may call for different responses. PayPal’s subscription failure guidance and PayPal’s payment failure handling guide
  3. Retry only when another attempt is appropriate. For a recoverable failure, follow the schedule supported by your provider and tell the customer when another attempt is planned. Do not treat a problem requiring customer action as though an identical retry were likely to fix it.
  4. Give the customer a clear way to fix payment details. When appropriate, ask them to update or replace the payment method and provide a direct route back into the payment flow. The requested action should match the failure, not simply say that payment failed.
  5. Apply the configured limit deliberately. At the limit—five attempts if that is your chosen policy—stop automatic retries and take the outcome your subscription terms describe: pause or suspend access, cancel, or leave the account Past Due only if you intend to keep billing and explain the balance implications.
  6. Keep a support path open. Provide a human route for disputes, incorrect account records, and cases where automated provider signals do not give enough information to decide what should happen.

Use provider events, not just the initial payment response

A failed payment may not be fully visible at the moment the transaction is first submitted. PayPal notes that some failures are asynchronous, so they may not appear during the initial transaction. Its subscription documentation identifies payment success and failure webhook events; use the events relevant to your integration to keep subscription state in sync. PayPal’s retry and webhook guidance and PayPal’s failure handling guide

Adyen’s Auto Rescue documentation likewise describes webhooks for retry results, subsequent scheduling, and completion. Your application should distinguish an attempt’s outcome from the overall recovery process being finished. Adyen Auto Rescue

Choose the end state before the retry limit is reached

“Stop retrying” is only half a recovery policy. Decide what happens to access, the subscription, and any unpaid balance—and make sure customer messages and product behavior match that decision.

  • Pause or suspend: Temporarily restrict the subscription according to your stated policy. PayPal’s documented plan settings can suspend a subscription after a configured failure threshold. PayPal’s subscription retry guide
  • Cancel: End the subscription rather than continuing collection attempts. Braintree lists cancellation as one possible outcome for a Past Due subscription. Braintree’s recurring billing settings
  • Keep it Past Due: Choose this only if you intend to preserve the account and continue billing under your policy. Braintree warns that the unpaid balance can increase with subsequent billing cycles; PayPal’s documented flow can add a failed amount to the next cycle’s outstanding balance. Braintree’s recurring billing settings and PayPal’s retry guide

Set the attempt limit, the consequence at that limit, and the customer’s route to recover in the subscription policy and payment-failure messages. Provider documentation does not establish five as a universal threshold, an ideal retry count, or a legal notice requirement.

When automatic retries are not the right recovery path

Some providers offer retry logic beyond a fixed, repeated schedule. PayPal describes its intelligent retry timing as proprietary and says it considers payment history, risk signals, and bank availability; this is PayPal’s description of its own system, not independent evidence of recovery performance. PayPal’s payment failure handling guide

Adyen Auto Rescue is also limited to transactions it considers eligible for another attempt. If it cannot recover a payment, a payment link may be available when that feature is enabled, giving the customer another route to pay. Adyen Auto Rescue

Clover Compact Payment Terminal - Requires New Merchant Processing Account Through Powering POS.
  • The Clover Compact and Clover Mini /Station sync with each other through the Clover Dashboard and cloud-based network. This allows you to manage transactions, track sales, and access business data across both devices seamlessly. Plug in, not battery/mobile. Requires New Processing account through Powering POS. These options do not remove the need to decide what your own subscription should do at its limit. Treat provider retry features as parts of a recovery flow, and ensure your system handles their events and final outcomes.
