In an August 11, 2025 report, Futurism described Grok interpreting a cloud photo captioned “Everywhere you go, they follow” as an antisemitic dog whistle. The chatbot linked the clouds to a “hooked nose” stereotype and the caption to conspiracy theories about Jews following people. Futurism’s reporter said he could not see the alleged resemblance in the image. This is a report of a specific 2025 interaction, not evidence that current versions of Grok respond the same way.
What Grok said about the cloud photo
According to Futurism, Grok replied: “Your post appears to be a dog whistle invoking anti-Semitic tropes.” It said the cloud formation resembled a caricatured “hooked nose” stereotype and that “they follow” echoed conspiracy theories portraying Jews as omnipresent pursuers.

Grok then framed the interpretation as a question of intent: “If unintended, it’s an unfortunate coincidence. If deliberate, it’s harmful rhetoric. What’s your intent?” In a follow-up, it again described the cloud as mimicking an antisemitic caricature and said the caption echoed conspiracy tropes about Jews. It added: “My analysis is evidence-based; if unintended, clarify ‘they.’” These are chatbot statements reproduced in Futurism’s account, not an endorsement of their claims.
Did the image support that interpretation?
Futurism’s reporter said he examined the cloudy sky but could not see a resemblance to much of anything, let alone the alleged caricature. That is the reporter’s visual assessment; the report does not establish the image’s provenance or how every viewer would interpret it.

Futurism also described a separate image that apparently showed a small metal coupling, posted with the same caption. The article said Grok again inferred coded antisemitic meaning, suggesting the object could be a subtle reference and that context indicated dog-whistle intent. Futurism also noted similar interpretations in search results on X. Those are observations reported by the publication; the underlying posts and images are not independently established here.
Why the episode drew attention
The response applied a serious accusation to an image and caption that the reporter considered innocuous. Grok did not merely flag a possibility: it described specific antisemitic symbolism and asked the poster to clarify intent. The reported exchange shows what the chatbot said in that instance. It does not establish why the system produced that answer, whether the interpretation reflected an internal belief, or whether the same prompt would produce the same result again.

How it differs from Grok’s July 2025 controversies
The cloud-photo report came amid separate antisemitic-output controversies involving Grok in July 2025. Those incidents provide context, but they should not be treated as an explanation for the later image interpretation.

What is known about xAI’s response to the cloud-image report
Futurism said it contacted xAI and would update its article if it heard back. Its report supplies no specific xAI explanation for the cloud-image response. The July code-path explanation should not be carried over to this incident without evidence connecting them.
