Chanel CEO Leena Nair recalled that ChatGPT turned a prompt for an image of Chanel’s senior leadership team visiting Microsoft into a scene of “all men in suits.” She shared the anecdote at a Stanford Graduate School of Business View From The Top conversation hosted by Ayesha Karnik. It was a striking mismatch, but one remembered output—not a controlled test of ChatGPT or proof of how image generators behave in general.

What happened in the ChatGPT demo

In an account reported by Hindustan Times on October 31, 2024, Nair said she and others were at Microsoft and asked ChatGPT: “Show us a picture of a senior leadership team from Chanel visiting Microsoft”. She recalled the generated image as “all men in suits.”

Nair contrasted that depiction with figures she gave for Chanel: 76% of her organization were women and 96% of her clients were women. She also identified herself as a female CEO. Those percentages are Nair’s reported statements in 2024 coverage; the reports do not independently verify them or establish that they remain current.

Why did ChatGPT show an all-male team?

The reports do not establish why the image looked that way. They do not identify the exact ChatGPT model or version, say whether the prompt was entered once or revised, or provide the original image for examination. Without those details or a reproducible test, the anecdote cannot show whether a particular prompt, model behavior, or other factor produced the result.

The mismatch raises a useful question: when an image generator is asked to depict “senior leadership,” whose characteristics does it treat as the default? Answering that more broadly would require evidence beyond this single recollection, such as repeated runs, documented model and prompt details, and comparisons across roles and genders.

What Nair said about AI

Futurism’s November 2, 2024 report also recounts the incident and quotes Nair urging technology leaders to think about the human consequences of AI: “I constantly talk to my friends in tech, all the CEOs, saying, ‘Come on, guys, you gotta make sure that you’re integrating a humanistic way of thinking in AI,’”

That comment places the anecdote in a wider conversation about representation in AI-generated images. It is Nair’s call for attention, not evidence that this one output establishes systematic bias or explains how a current model works.

What this incident can—and cannot—show

  • It can show: Nair recalled a prompt for a Chanel leadership-team visit to Microsoft and described the result as an all-male group in suits.
  • It cannot show: how frequently ChatGPT or other image generators produce similar results, why this output appeared, or how a specific current model version would respond.
  • It leaves open: whether repeated, documented tests with the same and varied prompts would produce a similar pattern.

The exact date of the Stanford conversation and a primary transcript or recording were not established in the two reports. The incident is best understood as Nair’s account of one surprising output, not as a benchmark or a general verdict on image-generation systems.
