Microsoft gave users until that date to move to Windows 8.1 if they wanted to remain supported. Windows 8.1 then reached the end of support on January 10, 2023. A Windows 8.1 computer will still boot and run, but Microsoft no longer supplies security updates, software updates, bug fixes, technical support, or updated online help. Microsoft offers no Extended Security Update program for Windows 8.1, so continued internet-connected use carries increasing security and compatibility risk.
When did Windows 8 support end?
There are two dates to keep separate because “Windows 8” is often used to describe both the original release and its 8.1 update.

| Product | Main support event | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 8 | Support ended January 12, 2016 | Users had to move to Windows 8.1 by this date to remain on a supported version. |
| Windows 8.1 | Mainstream support ended January 9, 2018 | Only extended support remained after this date. |
| Windows 8.1 | Extended support ended January 10, 2023 | Security updates, non-security updates, bug fixes, technical support, and online technical content updates stopped. |
| Windows 10 | Support ended October 14, 2025 | It is not a currently supported long-term destination for a new migration. |
Microsoft’s lifecycle table displays January 11, 2023 for the Windows 8.1 extended-support entry, while Microsoft’s end-of-support notice identifies January 10, 2023. For practical planning, use January 10, 2023: that is the cutoff Microsoft gives users in its support guidance.

Why Windows 8.1 mattered
Microsoft treated Windows 8.1 as the supported successor to Windows 8. The company’s lifecycle guidance told Windows 8 customers to upgrade by January 12, 2016. Remaining on the original Windows 8 release after that date meant losing support even before Windows 8.1 itself reached its later deadline.

What “end of support” means on an existing PC
End of support does not remotely deactivate the computer. Windows 8.1 can continue to start, run installed programs, open saved files, and connect to networks. The change is Microsoft’s maintenance commitment, not an automatic shutdown.
- No security fixes: newly discovered operating-system vulnerabilities will not receive Microsoft patches.
- No feature or quality updates: Microsoft no longer develops regular improvements or bug fixes for the system.
- No Microsoft technical support: official troubleshooting assistance for the operating system has ended.
- No updated online technical content: Microsoft’s support documentation for the retired product is no longer maintained as a current platform resource.
- No Windows 8.1 ESU: Microsoft has said it will not offer an Extended Security Update program for this operating system.
Existing third-party programs may continue to install or run, but that does not make the operating system supported. Each application vendor decides how long its software remains compatible with Windows 8.1.
Will my Windows 8.1 computer stop working?
Microsoft Support uses that exact question in its end-of-support FAQ. The answer is no: the computer continues to function, but it will not receive Windows updates or technical support. A working desktop, taskbar, printer, or application therefore should not be mistaken for a secure or supported computer.

Can you still use Windows 8.1 safely?
There is no responsible way to describe an internet-connected Windows 8.1 installation as fully safe. Microsoft warns that a PC without continuing software and security updates is at greater risk from viruses and malware. Unsupported software can contain vulnerabilities that remain unpatched after they become public or are actively exploited.
Microsoft does not publish a single percentage that predicts an individual user’s chance of compromise. Risk depends on factors such as whether the computer is online, which services it exposes, what software is installed, the value of the accounts used on it, and how quickly vulnerabilities are exploited. The important conclusion is qualitative: the risk is higher than on a currently supported operating system and rises as the support gap grows.
Why antivirus software is not a complete answer
An antivirus product, firewall, cautious browsing, and safe password practices can reduce some dangers, but they cannot turn an unsupported Windows installation into a supported one. Security tools may themselves stop supporting Windows 8.1, and they cannot guarantee protection against every operating-system vulnerability. Treat them as partial defenses, not a substitute for migration.

When continued use creates extra concerns
Microsoft cautions that continued Windows 8.1 use may increase security risk or affect organizational compliance obligations. A home user may accept a temporary risk that a business, school, healthcare provider, or regulated organization cannot. If the computer handles confidential work, financial accounts, customer data, or administrative access, the support status should be treated as a material security issue rather than a minor inconvenience.

What software still works on Windows 8.1?
Browsers
Microsoft says Edge version 109 was the last Microsoft Edge release that supports Windows 8.1. That does not mean every website will remain fully compatible with that browser, nor does it establish support for other browsers. Check the current operating-system requirements of any browser you depend on before deciding to keep the machine online.
Microsoft 365 and productivity software
Microsoft 365 applications are no longer supported on Windows 8.1. An installed copy may open, but lack of support can mean no compatible updates, no help with platform-specific failures, and increasing incompatibility with cloud services.
Peripherals and specialist applications
Printers, scanners, VPN clients, backup tools, security products, development environments, and specialist business applications can each have separate minimum-version policies. Make a list of software and devices that are essential, then verify their requirements directly with each vendor. “It works today” is not evidence that it will remain supported after an update to the service or device firmware.
Your practical options now
| Path | Security and support | Compatibility | Effort and cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the Windows 8.1 PC temporarily | No Microsoft security updates, fixes, or technical support; higher malware exposure. | Essential applications and peripherals may lose support, including Microsoft 365. | Lowest immediate effort, but risk and maintenance burden remain. |
| Move the existing PC to a supported Windows release | Provides support only if the hardware and installed edition meet the target release’s requirements. | Apps, drivers, and peripherals must be checked and commonly reinstalled. | Requires backup, installation work, file transfer, and possible hardware limitations. |
| Replace the computer with a Windows 11-capable laptop or desktop | Uses hardware designed for a currently supported Windows release. | Offers the cleanest route for modern applications, provided each essential program is compatible. | Higher purchase cost, but avoids forcing an incompatible old PC through an upgrade. |
Microsoft says Windows 8.1-era PCs are unlikely to meet Windows 11 requirements. Check the specific computer against Microsoft’s current Windows 11 requirements rather than assuming that an upgrade is possible. If it fails those requirements, Microsoft’s guidance is to replace it with a device that supports Windows 11.

Do not choose Windows 10 as a new long-term destination: its support ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 installation may still run, but it is not a currently supported endpoint after that date.

- Inventory the current system. Record the Windows edition, installed applications, browser bookmarks, email settings, printers, scanners, VPNs, accessibility tools, and any device-specific utilities you cannot replace easily.
- Check hardware eligibility. Use Microsoft’s official Windows 11 requirements and compatibility checks for the exact computer. Do not rely on the age of the processor or on a seller’s generic statement about a product family.
- Verify application support. Check the minimum Windows version for every essential program and peripheral. Pay particular attention to business software, security tools, backup software, and drivers.
- Make an independent backup. Copy important documents, photos, project files, browser data, and license information to storage that is separate from the computer. Test that several files can be opened from the backup.
- Choose an installation route. A supported-release installation may require reinstalling applications and transferring files, data, and settings. Microsoft warns that the installation path it describes can overwrite the existing storage drive, so assume the drive could be erased unless the exact process explicitly preserves it.
- Install and update the supported system. After installation, apply current operating-system updates, install supported drivers, restore files, and reinstall applications from their legitimate sources.
- Retire or isolate the old installation. Once the replacement works, remove sensitive accounts and data from the old computer before recycling, donating, or storing it. If you retain it, keep it off ordinary internet use where practical.
If you must keep Windows 8.1 for a while
Temporary retention should be treated as risk containment, not a safety certification. Reduce exposure while arranging a supported replacement:
- Use the computer for low-risk, non-sensitive tasks rather than banking, administrative access, or confidential work.
- Keep irreplaceable files backed up separately and verify the backups.
- Remove software and browser extensions you do not need, because every additional component adds maintenance and attack surface.
- Do not assume that an antivirus alert, firewall status, or successful browser update proves the operating system is protected.
- Check whether the security tools and applications you rely on still publish support for Windows 8.1.
- Disconnect the computer from networks when its online function is unnecessary, especially during periods when it is unattended.
- Set a concrete migration deadline; indefinite postponement leaves the unsupported platform in service while compatibility options shrink.
How to decide between upgrading and replacing
Start with compatibility, not price. If the existing computer meets the target Windows requirements and all essential applications have supported versions, an upgrade may be practical. You still need time for backups, reinstallation, and testing.

Compare a Windows 11-capable laptop or desktop against your workload, available budget, ports, display needs, storage, and peripheral compatibility. No particular model is guaranteed by the support guidance; the relevant question is whether the device meets current requirements and supports the software you actually use.
If the machine is used for sensitive work or must satisfy organizational compliance rules, the balance shifts strongly toward a supported replacement even when the old computer still appears reliable. The cost of migration is predictable; the consequences of an unpatched compromise may not be.
The Bottom Line
Windows 8 ended support in 2016, and Windows 8.1 ended support on January 10, 2023. The computer can still run, but Microsoft provides no security updates or ESU coverage. Use it only as a short-term, deliberately limited stopgap while moving to a supported Windows release or replacing hardware that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements.
