Pacific Science Center retired its animatronic dinosaur exhibit after more than 40 years because maintaining the aging machines and keeping them operating safely and reliably had become increasingly difficult and expensive. The museum documented the pieces, considered preservation options and says two dinosaurs remain in its Main Entry. It also announced a short-lived public fundraiser offering pieces of the retired exhibit for adoption, but has not published the final destination of every piece.
Why Pacific Science Center retired the dinosaurs
According to Pacific Science Center (PacSci), many animatronic components were custom-built in the 1980s and 1990s. As the equipment aged, repairs became more complex and costly, while the company that originally made the animatronics had gone out of business. That left the museum without the manufacturer support it wanted in order to maintain the exhibit to its preferred standard.

PacSci described the retirement as a considered decision, not the result of a stated single breakdown or safety incident. Staff documented pieces and evaluated preservation options before decommissioning the exhibit. The museum’s account does not identify a budget crisis or give a specific closure date. PacSci’s history of the dinosaurs was published December 8, 2025.

Two dinosaurs remain in the Main Entry
PacSci says two dinosaurs remain in its Main Entry. That does not mean the former dinosaur gallery is still open: the museum’s current exhibits listing does not include the dinosaur exhibit.

The adoption fundraiser was temporary
On December 9, 2025, PacSci announced a public adoption fundraiser for pieces of the retired animatronic exhibit. The campaign ran from December 10 through December 18, 2025, ending at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time; those dates have passed. The museum said proceeds would support its nonprofit mission. Some offered pieces could be partial, incomplete or worn, and adoptions were as-is. Shipping was not available, and adopters were responsible for transport during the designated pickup window.
The announcement does not report the campaign’s outcome or say where every dinosaur or component ultimately went. PacSci’s adoption announcement is the available account of that fundraiser.

How the exhibit grew from a seasonal attraction
PacSci introduced Dinosaurs: A Journey Through Time in 1984 as the main attraction of its winter-break Science Circus program. The museum says nearly 47,000 people visited by the end of that program. It returned in 1985, drawing more than 66,000 visitors according to PacSci, and went on its first Washington State tour in 1987; PacSci reports 105,000 visitors across the tour.

By 1991, the dinosaurs had a permanent home in a 4,500-square-foot gallery. Other milestones included the 1994 exhibition Dinosaurs of Jurassic Park, featuring film props and artifacts, which PacSci says drew 341,000 visitors, and the 2002 arrival of Sue, a cast of the Field Museum’s large and relatively complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton. These attendance totals are the museum’s retrospective figures, not independently audited counts.

The experience included moving, sounding animatronics and Dino Passports for visitors. PacSci also connected dinosaurs with programs and related displays over the years, including Jim Gary’s 1986 Twentieth Century Dinosaurs sculptures made from car parts. In July 2022, the museum listed the dinosaur exhibit among experiences available as it reopened to the public. That announcement records its status at that time, not today’s.

No dinosaur exhibit appears on PacSci’s current exhibits page. The museum’s retrospective says two dinosaurs remain in the Main Entry, but its public information does not establish the current location of every retired animatronic or the results of the adoption fundraiser.
