What Happened to Stability AI? The Stable Diffusion Maker’s 2024 Cash Crisis—and Where It Stands Now

A May 2024 report described Stability AI as cash-strapped and considering a sale. The company remained operational after new investment and leadership, but its financial health is still not publicly clear.

Stability AI did not simply collapse. A May 16, 2024 report said the company behind the Stable Diffusion brand was losing heavily, facing roughly $100 million in bills and considering a sale. That described a serious cash crisis—not a completed shutdown, insolvency ruling or confirmed acquisition. Subsequent investment, leadership changes and continued product sales kept Stability AI operating, although public sources do not establish that it is profitable or financially secure today.

What the May 2024 headline actually meant

The headline came from a May 16, 2024 report. “Considering a sale” meant that a transaction was reportedly being explored; it did not mean a buyer had signed a definitive agreement. “Collapsing” was editorial language for financial distress, not a legal or accounting status.

The figures in that report were attributed to reporting by The Information, rather than to an audited Stability AI statement published with the story. They should therefore be read as reported estimates for early 2024, not as the company’s current balance sheet.

The reported numbers behind the crisis

Reported item Figure and qualification
First-quarter 2024 revenue Less than $5 million, according to the cited reporting
First-quarter 2024 losses More than $30 million, according to the cited reporting
Outstanding bills About $100 million, including obligations reportedly owed to cloud-computing providers and others

Those numbers point to a classic generative-AI cash-flow problem: training and serving large models consumes expensive computing capacity, while downloads, attention and experimentation do not automatically become recurring revenue. The company had to turn model popularity into paid API usage, subscriptions, licensing and enterprise contracts while competing with better-capitalized services.

What Stability AI is—and what “maker” leaves out

Stability AI became closely associated with Stable Diffusion, the open-weight text-to-image model that helped make consumer image generation widely accessible. Calling the company its “maker” is useful shorthand, but the model emerged from work involving research partners and collaborators. Stability AI’s central role was commercializing, distributing and building services around the technology.

The business was broader than image generation. Stability AI has pursued APIs, commercial licensing and generative products spanning image, video, audio and other media. Its current company site describes that wider platform at stability.ai.

Why the business model was under pressure

Compute costs arrive before revenue

Model training, inference and storage require costly GPUs and cloud contracts. If usage grows faster than paid conversion, a popular model can increase expenses faster than income.

Open distribution complicates monetization

Open or broadly distributed weights can accelerate adoption without giving one company control of every use. A durable business therefore needs valuable hosted services, commercial rights, infrastructure, partnerships or enterprise support. Openness is not inherently unprofitable, but it makes cost recovery and differentiation more demanding.

Competition raised the bar

Stability AI faced image and media-generation competition from Midjourney, Adobe, OpenAI, Google, Meta and newer specialist platforms. Customers could compare quality, reliability, licensing and price rather than simply choosing the first widely available model.

Leadership departures and governance turbulence

Several researchers reportedly left in March 2024. Founder and CEO Emad Mostaque then resigned as CEO and from the board that month. A resignation is not evidence that he was fired, nor does the available reporting establish that one person alone caused the company’s problems.

Later announcements identified Prem Akkaraju as CEO and Sean Parker as executive chairman, alongside new investor backing. That change in leadership and capital helps explain why a reported sale scenario did not automatically lead to a shutdown.

Legal exposure added uncertainty

Getty Images sued Stability AI over alleged use of copyrighted material in AI training. The case should be described as litigation and allegations, not as a final finding that the company unlawfully trained its models. The available material does not establish a complete final resolution.

For a prospective buyer or customer, unresolved litigation can mean potential damages, legal fees, licensing costs and uncertainty about training data, model distribution or commercial use. It can also complicate financing and contracts, even before a court reaches a final decision.

Was Stability AI sold or did it collapse?

No source gathered for this article establishes a completed sale resulting from the May 2024 report. Later investment and leadership announcements point instead to a company that continued under the Stability AI name.

Its website, developer platform, licensing pages, release materials and service-status infrastructure remain active. The official status page has recently reported the platform as fully operational. That demonstrates operational continuity—not profitability, adequate cash reserves, low debt or a known valuation.

What Stability AI sells now

Stability AI’s current developer materials promote Stable Diffusion 3.5 models and hosted image services. The pricing page uses credits, with one credit equal to $0.01. The figures below are API prices shown on the official page and can change; they are not measures of the company’s overall economics.

Service Listed credits Approximate API cost
Stable Image Ultra 8 $0.08 per generation
Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large 6.5 $0.065 per generation
Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large Turbo 4 $0.04 per generation
Stable Diffusion 3.5 Medium 3.5 $0.035 per generation
Stable Diffusion 3.5 Flash 2.5 $0.025 per generation

New accounts are described as receiving 25 free credits in the developer onboarding documentation; eligibility can vary by signup method or geography. Details and current prices are on Stability AI’s pricing page.

Deprecations matter as much as new releases

Stability AI deprecated its Stable Diffusion 3.0 APIs on April 17, 2025 and redirected them to 3.5 equivalents. The Stable Video API and Stable Diffusion 1.6 API were scheduled for discontinuation on July 24, 2025, while self-hosted Stable Video access remained available through licensing. The company’s API update and release notes show why developers should not assume an endpoint will remain unchanged.

What the episode means for developers and buyers

Check operational and model continuity

Monitor the status page, identify the exact model and API identifier in use, and maintain a migration or fallback plan. A working service today does not guarantee long-term support.

Read the license, not just the model name

“Open” or “open-weight” does not mean unrestricted commercial use. Stability AI’s license terms distinguish community use from cases that may require an enterprise license, including a stated $1 million annual-revenue threshold subject to the full terms. Check the specific model, business circumstances and any API-provider obligations.

Compare hosted API and self-hosting honestly

Hosted inference avoids GPU operations and charges per use, but adds vendor dependence and variable endpoint availability. Self-hosting can improve privacy and control, yet shifts costs to GPUs, cloud rentals, deployment, security, maintenance, scaling and model updates. API credits are not a proxy for total self-hosting cost.

Review legal and provenance risk

Before building a commercial product, examine training-data disclosures, restrictions on generated content, indemnity language and the status of relevant litigation. Stability AI’s continued operation does not remove intellectual-property uncertainty.

The broader lesson

Stability AI’s story separates technological influence from business durability. Stable Diffusion could remain available through communities and third parties even if its original commercial sponsor failed. Conversely, a company can keep releasing models and selling API access without proving that its finances are healthy. The defensible conclusion is that Stability AI suffered a major 2024 financial and organizational crisis, then stabilized enough to keep operating through new leadership, investment, licensing and API sales; its current profitability remains unverified.
