Orkut shut down on September 30, 2014. Google preserved public community discussions in an online Community Archive, but the archive is not the old Orkut service and does not restore profiles, logins, private material, or normal posting. Google’s historical export window through Google Takeout ended in September 2016; its current help documentation says Orkut profile items can no longer be saved. You may still be able to view public community discussions through Google’s documented archive, although Google does not establish that every historical page remains available.
Orkut ended in 2014, while public community discussions moved to an archive
Google announced on June 30, 2014 that it would close Orkut on September 30 of that year. In the announcement, Engineering Director Paulo Golgher wrote, “We will shut down Orkut on September 30, 2014.” Google said new accounts could no longer be created and gave existing members time to move to other services. Its stated reason was that communities were growing on YouTube, Blogger and Google+, so Google chose to focus resources there. Read the original announcement on the Google India Blog.

On the shutdown date, Google said it was making an online archive of public Orkut communities available. That decision preserved a historical record of discussions, but it did not keep Orkut operating as a social network. There is no current Orkut account service where you can sign in, create a profile, add friends, join a community or publish a new post.

The archive covers public community material, not everything an account once contained. A private message, a profile field, a restricted community or a photo that was not included in the public record should not be assumed to be present. Google’s current support page describes the archive as a place to view public community discussions; it does not promise that every post, image or page from Orkut’s years online is still available.

What Google said the archive contained at launch
Google’s September 30, 2014 preservation announcement gave a snapshot of the material it had placed in the archive. These figures were Google’s own 2014 launch-time counts, not a current, independently audited total.
| Archive measure | Google’s reported figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Communities | 51 million | Google-reported count at the archive’s 2014 launch |
| Topics | 120 million | Google-reported count at the archive’s 2014 launch |
| Interactions | More than 1 billion | Google-reported total at the archive’s 2014 launch |
The numbers show the scale of Orkut’s community activity, but they should not be used as a current count of pages that you can browse today. Google has not established in the cited material that the archive has retained every item represented by those launch figures, nor that every archived URL still works. Google’s preservation announcement is available at “Preserving Orkut’s history”.
Orkut’s shutdown and archive timeline
- June 30, 2014: Google announced the September 30 closure, stopped new-account creation and advised existing users to transition to other services. The announcement attributed the decision to activity moving toward YouTube, Blogger and Google+.
- September 30, 2014: The Orkut service shut down. Google made its online archive of public communities available from that date.
- Through September 2016: Google offered a historical export route through Google Takeout for profile data, community posts and photos. This was a limited post-closure opportunity, not a permanent download feature.
- Today: Google’s Orkut Help Center still documents viewing public community discussions in the Community Archive. The same help documentation says that items associated with an Orkut profile can no longer be saved.
The key distinction is between the 2014 archive and the 2016 export deadline. The archive was intended for public viewing; Takeout was the way eligible users could obtain copies of their data. Missing the Takeout window cannot be fixed by starting a new Orkut account, because the service no longer accepts accounts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan you still see old Orkut posts?
Google’s documented option is the Community Archive. It is designed for public community discussions, so it is the appropriate place to look for an old topic, reply or conversation that was visible to the public. Google’s current instructions and links are in the Orkut Help Center.

Use the archive as a viewing resource rather than as a guarantee of recovery. The available documentation does not establish that every historical post remains indexed, that every image is still retrievable, or that every archive page works in every country and browser. Individual archive pages were not independently verified for this article. A search that produces no result therefore does not prove that a discussion never existed; it may indicate that the item was private, excluded from the public archive, removed, or no longer reachable.
What the archive is most likely to help with
- Public community topics and replies that Google preserved during the 2014 shutdown.
- Historical discussions whose community and topic information is still exposed by the archive.
- Reading material for research, personal memories or community history when the relevant page remains available.
What it cannot be assumed to provide
- A working Orkut profile, friend list, login session or ability to post.
- A guaranteed copy of private messages, restricted communities or non-public profile fields.
- A complete, current mirror of every photo and attachment ever uploaded to Orkut.
- A new export of profile data after Google’s September 2016 Takeout period.
Can you download your old Orkut data now?
Not through Google Takeout. Google’s 2014 closure announcement said users could export profile data, community posts and photos with Takeout through September 2016. That deadline has passed. Google’s current Help Center explicitly says it is no longer possible to save items associated with an Orkut profile. Do not rely on older guides that instruct you to select Orkut in Takeout; those instructions described a historical option.
This also means that an archived public page and a personal data export are different things. You might be able to read a public discussion in the Community Archive, yet have no supported way to download the complete profile or all of the data that once belonged to your account. The current documentation does not offer a replacement export process.
If you already downloaded a Takeout archive
Any copy you obtained before the September 2016 cutoff is now your own local record. Check old computers, backup drives, cloud-storage accounts and email attachments using the filenames and dates from the export. Preserve the original files before reorganizing them, and keep more than one backup if the material is important. Those are personal preservation steps, not a way to request a new export from Google.

How to delete an Orkut community post
Google’s Help Center documents a way to delete Orkut community posts through Google Account service-deletion controls. Because the Orkut site itself is closed, deletion is handled through Google’s account-support process rather than through an Orkut posting screen. Start with the instructions in the official Orkut Help Center, sign in when Google requests account verification, and follow the service-deletion directions that apply to the post.
Before requesting removal, identify the community, topic and author information as precisely as possible. A clear description helps distinguish your post from similarly titled discussions. Save any evidence you need for your own records first, because a successful deletion request can remove the material you are trying to document. The support page is the authoritative route for the current procedure; third-party “recovery” or bulk-deletion tools cannot restore the closed Orkut service.
How to report abuse, copyright or other legal issues
Google’s Orkut support documentation also describes reporting routes for abuse and for copyright or other legal complaints. Use the category that matches the problem and provide the archive page or identifying details requested by Google. A report is different from a general request to recover an old post: Google may need to assess policy, copyright ownership or legal authority before taking action.
Recommended Free Tools
If the page concerns someone else’s personal information, explain what makes the material harmful and identify the exact public discussion. For copyright complaints, be prepared to establish your rights and identify the material at issue. The Help Center’s reporting guidance is the current source for submission requirements and any forms Google still accepts.

Why some old communities may be difficult to find
Several limits follow from the way Orkut was closed and preserved:
- Public visibility: Google’s archive description is specifically about public community discussions. Material that was not public was not promised as part of the archive.
- Historical capture: The archive was created at shutdown, so later edits, deletions or changes to an original page cannot be assumed to appear.
- Changed infrastructure: Links, images and embedded material may depend on systems that no longer operate, even when a text discussion remains.
- Archive availability: Google’s help page documents the archive but does not guarantee that every page is reachable or complete today.
- Account removal: Profile-level information is not covered by a current export facility, and Google says profile items can no longer be saved.
These limits explain why two people can remember a community that produces different results when searched. One person may be looking for a public topic that was preserved, while another is looking for a profile item, private exchange or attachment outside the archive’s documented scope.
What happened to community ownership and new posts?
Orkut communities did not continue as active groups after September 30, 2014. The closure ended ordinary membership and publishing functions. The archive preserves historical public discussions for reference; it is not a successor network with moderators, notifications, invitations or new replies. If an old community name appears in an archive result, that appearance should be read as a record of past activity, not evidence that the group can be reopened.
Google’s reason for closing Orkut was strategic: it said community activity was increasingly happening on YouTube, Blogger and Google+, and it wanted to concentrate resources there. That explanation describes Google’s 2014 decision; it does not mean Orkut communities were automatically migrated into any one of those services. A community’s later existence elsewhere must be confirmed independently rather than inferred from its old Orkut page.
Best Value
A practical way to handle an old Orkut reference
- Classify the material. Decide whether you need a public community discussion, a profile item, a photo, a private message or a legal/abuse action. The archive is documented for public discussions, while profile exports are no longer available.
- Use Google’s current support route. Open the Orkut Help Center for the Community Archive link and the current deletion or reporting instructions.
- Record what you find. Save the page address, community name, topic title and visible date. If the page is important, keep a lawful personal copy or screenshot for reference, subject to the rights of the people who created the material.
- If nothing appears, check the scope before concluding it is gone. Consider whether the item was private, profile-based, an attachment, or a page Google did not preserve. The documentation does not promise a complete archive.
- For your own post, choose deletion or reporting deliberately. Use deletion instructions when you control the post and want it removed; use abuse, copyright or legal-reporting channels when the issue requires Google’s review.
The bottom line on Orkut’s archived content
Orkut itself is gone, having closed on September 30, 2014. Google preserved public community discussions in a Community Archive and reported 51 million communities, 120 million topics and more than 1 billion interactions when that archive launched. Those are historical launch figures, not a promise that every page works now. Public discussions may still be viewable through Google’s documented archive, but profiles and other private or non-public material are not guaranteed. The only official Takeout window ended in September 2016, and Google now says Orkut profile items can no longer be saved. For deletion or abuse, copyright and legal reports, use the current Orkut Help Center rather than old Orkut instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create a new Orkut account to access an old community?
No. Google stopped new-account creation when it announced the closure, and the Orkut service shut down on September 30, 2014. The Community Archive is for viewing preserved public discussions, not for signing in or joining communities.
Does finding a community in the archive prove that every post and photo survived?
No. Google documents the archive as a place to view public community discussions, but its current help information does not guarantee complete coverage of posts, images, attachments or individual pages.
Is there an official way to export my Orkut profile today?
No. The Google Takeout export period ended in September 2016, and Google’s current Orkut Help Center says profile-associated items can no longer be saved.
