Its extraordinary June 2024 audience was driven less by deep gameplay than by periodic collectible drops, Steam Community Market speculation, idling and suspected account farming. SteamDB records a historical peak of 917,272 concurrent players on June 20, 2024—not 700,000 attentive people playing a conventional game.
What Banana actually is
Released on April 23, 2024, Banana is a single-player clicker/idler for Windows and Linux. You click the banana, wait, and collect banana-themed cosmetic items. The Steam listing identifies Sky, AestheticSpartan and Banana Game as the developers and lists features including Steam Trading Cards, Workshop support, Steam Cloud, statistics and leaderboards. The game is free to play: view its Steam page.

There is very little conventional gameplay. The important loop is the inventory: drops can be kept, displayed, traded or listed on the Steam Community Market. That turns a one-screen joke into a small speculative economy.

- Install the free game and click the banana.
- Leave it running or return at intervals to check for a drop.
- Receive a random cosmetic banana from the available pools.
- List the item on the Steam Community Market or trade it.
- Hope another user values that item more highly, then repeat the process.
The store describes a three-hour drop cycle and additional pools with very low stated odds for some rarities. Contemporary PC Gamer coverage also described brief play followed by returning every few hours, with longer play potentially opening another rare-drop interval. Drop rules can change, so the current store description is the appropriate reference rather than assuming every 2024 rule still applies.

This is closer to item farming than to a game that rewards clicking skill. Because the program uses little hardware, leaving multiple clients open was practical for people focused on drops rather than entertainment.
Why the items appeared valuable
A market listing is an asking price, not proof that someone paid it. The useful distinctions are:
- Listing price: what a seller requests.
- Completed sale: evidence that a buyer actually paid.
- Liquidity: how many buyers and sellers are active at a price.
- Steam Wallet value: credit generally usable inside Steam, not unrestricted bank cash.
- Speculative value: a price sustained by the expectation that someone else will pay more.
Contemporary reporting found common bananas selling for only a few cents while unusual items were listed much higher. A rare-looking banana with a dramatic listing can still be unsold, thinly traded or impossible to liquidate at that price. Without verified completed-sale data and volume, an asking price should not be presented as ordinary earning potential.
The June 2024 surge, date by date
| Date | Milestone | Source and context |
|---|---|---|
| April 23, 2024 | Steam release | Release date shown by the Steam store and SteamDB. |
| May 29, 2024 | About 31,124 concurrent players | PC Gamer reported the early peak while the game still offered almost no conventional content. |
| June 7, 2024 | About 84,000 to 134,000 in roughly 11 hours | PC Gamer reported the rapid rise and entry into Steam’s top ten. |
| June 14–15, 2024 | Approximately 420,000, then 700,000 | Contemporary secondary summaries described the continuing acceleration. |
| June 17, 2024 | 858,915 concurrent players | PC Gamer reported this contemporary peak. |
| June 20, 2024 | 917,272 all-time peak | SteamDB’s historical chart records the higher peak. |
The familiar “700K concurrent” headline therefore refers to a June 2024 moment. It is not a current-player claim for 2026. SteamDB’s app page and chart remain useful for historical context, but a live count fluctuates and must be checked at publication time if one is quoted: app data and historical charts.

Were those 917,272 players real?
The number itself is a real recorded concurrency figure: accounts were reporting Banana as active, and the game genuinely appeared near the top of Steam’s charts. That does not mean 917,272 people were watching the screen and clicking.
Concurrent-player telemetry generally counts active clients or accounts. In this case, a client could represent:
- a person briefly clicking and checking inventory;
- an idle game left open while its owner did something else;
- one of many alternate accounts operated by the same person; or
- an automated farming account.
PC Gamer reported developer claims that some operators abused hundreds, in some cases up to 1,000, alternative accounts. That is an attributed statement, not an independently audited percentage of bots. The low hardware cost and periodic-drop design nevertheless explain why large-scale idling and automation were unusually easy. The careful conclusion is that the peak was a genuine Steam concurrency event, but not a reliable measure of attentive human fandom.

Was Banana a scam?
“Scam” can mean legal fraud, a dishonest technical scheme or simply a market that feels exploitative. The available evidence supports concern, not a definitive finding that the entire project was fraudulent.

The game used real Steam inventory and marketplace systems. The developers publicly denied an ongoing scam, discussed bot abuse and separated from a controversial former developer, according to PC Gamer’s reporting. Those are the team’s statements, not an independent certification that every market practice was sound.
There is no established evidence here that the developers manufactured every valuable item, that every expensive listing was fake, that Valve declared the game fraudulent or that the entire player base consisted of bots. It is more accurate to describe Banana as a marketplace-driven, speculative ecosystem with serious botting concerns. A design can encourage idling, scarcity speculation and risky spending without meeting the strict legal definition of fraud.
The developers’ later retrospective said the game exceeded 900,000 concurrent players and that some bananas sold for as much as $250. The first claim is broadly consistent with SteamDB’s historical peak; the item-price claim is first-party and should not be treated as independently verified completed-sale data: the retrospective.

Can a normal player make money?
There is no reliable hourly-income figure established by the available evidence. A normal player should assume that common drops may be worth only a few cents, while rare-item asking prices are volatile and may never produce a sale.

A free game can still expose users to expensive social-engineering attempts. Use Steam’s own interfaces and treat unsolicited offers as hostile until independently verified.
- Never give anyone your Steam password, API key, QR code or login-session information.
- Ignore messages from people impersonating Steam staff or claiming they must “verify” an item.
- Do not accept a trade because a stranger says a banana is worth more than your inventory.
- Check completed market history and transaction volume, not screenshots or asking prices.
- For account or trade problems, use Steam Support.
Community reports describe suspicious trade requests around the game’s items, but anecdotal reports cannot establish how common those attempts are. They are still a reason to avoid off-platform deals and credential requests.

Is Banana worth trying in 2026?
That depends on the goal. For a curiosity-driven experiment in Steam culture, the game is easy to try because it is free. For meaningful gameplay, dependable income or an investment, it is a poor fit. The conditions that created the June 2024 spike—novelty, a thinly traded item economy, idling and account farming—should not be assumed to persist.

Why the banana story matters
Banana exposed incentives built into platform economies. Steam charts reward visible concurrency; free software lowers the cost of creating thousands of accounts; periodic drops turn idle time into a perceived opportunity; and a marketplace lets scarcity narratives spread faster than verified sales data.
The result is a useful distinction for reading any viral player-count story: “playing” may include idling, farming and automation, while “worth” may mean an unsold listing denominated in Steam Wallet credit. Banana was real as a viral event, but its lesson is about platform mechanics and speculation as much as about a joke clicker.
Frequently Asked Questions
When did Banana reach 700,000 concurrent players?
The roughly 700,000 figure belongs to the June 2024 viral surge. SteamDB records the higher historical peak of 917,272 concurrent players on June 20, 2024.
Does Banana require constant clicking?
No. The important incentive was periodic item drops, so users could idle or return at intervals rather than interact continuously.
Can Steam banana items be converted directly into cash?
Steam Community Market proceeds are generally Steam Wallet funds. A listing price is also not proof of a completed sale.
