After Steve Jobs resigned as Apple’s CEO on August 24, 2011, Tim Cook took over. Jobs recommended Cook to the board and became chairman. Apple then expanded its products and services, moved Mac computers to Apple-designed silicon, and grew substantially in reported sales. Those results show how the company changed; they do not, by themselves, prove that it was more or less innovative than it had been under Jobs.
How Apple’s leadership changed in 2011
On August 24, 2011, Apple announced that Jobs had resigned as CEO, recommended Cook as his successor, and been elected chairman of the board. Cook was Apple’s chief operating officer. The company said his responsibilities included worldwide sales and operations, from supply-chain management to sales, service, and support. Apple’s announcement also quoted then-Genentech chairman Art Levinson, speaking for Apple’s board: “The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO,” he said. Apple’s reported sales grew considerably
Apple reported total net sales of $108.249 billion in fiscal 2011 and $416.161 billion in fiscal 2025. These are nominal figures for Apple fiscal years—not adjusted for inflation. Fiscal 2011 ended September 24, 2011; fiscal 2025 ended September 27, 2025. The increase describes the company’s growth, but sales alone cannot establish how much any one CEO caused it or whether its products were more innovative. What Apple sold—and how its revenue mix changed
The iPhone remained Apple’s largest listed revenue category in fiscal 2025. Services had also become a business exceeding $100 billion in annual net sales. Comparisons across the two years need care: Apple’s category labels and reporting changed, so product-line figures are not all directly comparable.
| Fiscal year | Total net sales | Selected reported categories |
|---|---|---|
| 2011, ended September 24 | $108.249 billion | iPhone and related products and services: $47.057 billion; iPad and related products and services: $20.358 billion |
| 2025, ended September 27 | $416.161 billion | iPhone: $209.586 billion; Services: $109.158 billion; Wearables, Home and Accessories: $35.686 billion |
The fiscal-year values come from Apple’s respective 2011 and 2025 Form 10-K filings. Apple reported that Services net sales grew 14% year over year in fiscal 2025, attributing the increase primarily to advertising, the App Store, and cloud services. Apple’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K.

The documented changes—new product categories, a larger services business, and a shift to Apple-designed silicon—show that Apple continued developing products and its platform after Jobs left the CEO role. They do not settle the more subjective comparison with the Jobs era. Launch history and financial growth are measurable; judgments about originality, risk-taking, and cultural impact require different evidence. The cited company statements and filings do not independently assess which era was more innovative.
