GTA VI’s Vice City is a fictional city in the fictional state of Leonida—not a literal recreation of Miami. Rockstar’s official materials establish those names and invite players to explore Vice City and beyond. The resemblance to South Florida is the point: the setting draws on recognizable coastal scenery, architecture and regional contrasts, then compresses them into a game world. Comparing it with Miami is most useful when you treat the game as a stylized interpretation, not a documentary map.
What is Vice City based on?
Vice City is Rockstar’s fictional counterpart to Miami. The company calls the game’s state Leonida and identifies Vice City as one of its places. Its official game page describes the setting as “Vice City, USA,” while its Trailer 2 announcement refers to a criminal conspiracy “stretching across the state of Leonida” and invites players to “Explore Vice City and beyond.” These statements establish the game’s fictional geography; they do not establish that every neighborhood, road or landmark corresponds to a real South Florida location.

That distinction matters because a recognizable inspiration and a faithful map are different things. A neon-lit beachfront, palm-lined streets or a cluster of pastel hotels can evoke Miami without reproducing a specific block. A fictional city can also combine visual references from several places and reshape distances, neighborhoods and terrain to make a coherent game environment. The most defensible comparison is therefore about the cues Rockstar uses and what they bring to mind—not a claim that Vice City is Miami under another name.

Is Vice City supposed to be Miami?
In the broad cultural and visual sense, Vice City is strongly associated with Miami. In the literal geographic sense, it is not Miami: Rockstar uses “Vice City” and “Leonida,” rather than the real city and state names. The official materials support an interpretation of the game as a fictionalized South Florida setting, not a one-to-one city model.

“Miami” itself can mean more than one geographic area in everyday conversation. The City of Miami is a municipality; Miami-Dade County is a much larger county, and South Florida is a still broader regional frame. A scene inspired by the region might draw on coastal or wetland imagery beyond the municipality’s boundaries. So a comparison to the City of Miami should not be treated as a comparison to all of Miami-Dade, let alone the whole region.
This also explains why trailer landmark claims need careful wording. Axios identified South Beach Art Deco hotels near Lummus Park in the first trailer’s opening scene and asked Daniel Ciraldo, executive director of the Miami Design Preservation League, to assess the imagery. Ciraldo told Axios: “I must say the depictions are pretty exciting, it looks like they took the best of South Florida from the Everglades to South Beach and everything in between,” That is an expert’s response to trailer imagery reported by Axios—not a Rockstar confirmation that the scene depicts a specific hotel or that the game map covers every place mentioned.
What parts of Miami are in GTA 6?
No official Rockstar source cited here confirms a checklist of real Miami neighborhoods or landmarks in the game. Trailer viewers and journalists can identify visual similarities, but those remain interpretations unless Rockstar confirms them. The South Beach hotel scene is a useful example: the Art Deco resemblance is recognizable, while the exact identity and geographic fidelity of the fictional buildings are not established by the available official descriptions.

It is more accurate to ask what parts of South Florida’s visual identity the game appears to draw on. The strongest documented comparison is the region’s built environment: distinctive historic architecture, tropical and nautical motifs, and the contrast between dense coastal places and a broader landscape. Miami-Dade County’s architectural history also describes climate-responsive details, such as jalousie windows designed to encourage cross-breezes. Such details help explain why the region’s architecture is more varied than a single beachfront style.
- Art Deco and South Beach imagery: A concentration of historic hotels and tropical design cues can immediately suggest Miami’s coastal identity, but visual resemblance does not confirm a precise in-game address.
- Architecture beyond Art Deco: Miami’s historic landscape also includes Mediterranean Revival, Craftsman, Bahamian or Conch, Streamline Moderne and Miami Modern examples. A South Florida-inspired setting need not look like one uninterrupted Art Deco district.
- A wider regional frame: Rockstar’s phrase “Vice City and beyond,” together with the Leonida setting, signals a world extending past the named city. It does not by itself identify which real places the wider game world represents.
Why Miami’s architecture is more than pastel hotels
The City of Miami’s Historic Preservation Division identifies several distinct local traditions, including Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival, Craftsman, Bahamian or Conch, and Miami Modern architecture. That range is a better starting point for understanding the real city than treating one postcard view as the whole place.
Art Deco’s tropical and nautical vocabulary
The City dates its Art Deco examples to 1929–1940 and describes South Florida’s version as incorporating tropical and nautical motifs. The examples include palms, flamingos, pelicans, the moon and ocean themes. These are not incidental decorations: they help make a recognizable visual language from local climate and coastal surroundings. A game that uses streamlined façades, bright colors or ocean-inspired ornament can evoke this tradition even if its buildings are invented.

Other styles change the picture
Mediterranean Revival and Craftsman examples broaden the city’s architectural story beyond the celebrated beachfront strip. The City also identifies Bahamian or Conch homes, especially in Overtown and Coconut Grove. Miami-Dade County’s account traces regional development through Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco, Streamline Moderne and Miami Modern architecture. Its mention of jalousie windows is a reminder that buildings also respond to heat and airflow, not just to a preferred look.

The City dates Miami Modern architecture to 1945–1965. That period and the earlier Art Deco era are distinct parts of the local built environment, rather than interchangeable labels for a general “retro Miami” appearance. A compressed game world may blend references or emphasize a few of them for visual impact; that should not be mistaken for a complete survey of Miami’s architectural history.
How large is the real Miami being compared?
The City of Miami’s 2024 report lists approximately 467,171 residents and an area of 35.87 square miles. The report attributes its population figure to the University of Florida Bureau of Economic and Business Research. It also reports that 57.7 percent of the city’s residents were foreign born. Those are city-level figures for the City of Miami, not Miami-Dade County totals, and the population number is an estimate presented in a 2024 report—not a timeless or current-day count.

The scale distinction changes how a game comparison should be read. Miami-Dade County encompasses far more territory than the City of Miami, while “South Florida” describes a still wider region. A game’s state-sized setting can evoke elements associated with the whole region without reproducing the municipal footprint of Miami. Conversely, a scene resembling South Beach does not establish that the fictional city’s entire map corresponds to the real city.
| Comparison | What is established | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Vice City | Rockstar names it as a city in fictional Leonida and labels the game setting “Vice City, USA.” | A one-to-one map of Miami or confirmed identities for every real-world landmark. |
| City of Miami | The municipality’s 2024 report lists approximately 467,171 residents, 57.7 percent foreign born and 35.87 square miles. | The population or area of all Miami-Dade County or South Florida. |
| South Florida references | Trailer imagery has been interpreted as drawing on places and styles such as South Beach and Art Deco hotels. | Official Rockstar confirmation of a complete real-world location list. |
The 57.7 percent foreign-born figure is a useful reminder that Miami is a city shaped by migration and many communities, not just a collection of architecture and scenery. It should not be used to imply that residents share one cultural identity or that a fictional game setting represents the city’s population accurately. A percentage describes one reported demographic measure; it cannot stand in for the city’s full social complexity.

Sunshine, beaches and tropical design are powerful shorthand for Miami, but they are not the whole environmental story. The City of Miami identifies hurricanes, storm surge and flooding as longstanding vulnerabilities, and says climate change is a factor shaping the city’s future. These risks are part of the real place’s relationship with its coastal environment, even when a fictional setting foregrounds spectacle and recreation.

This comparison should remain qualitative. The cited City material establishes that these hazards matter; it does not provide a numeric projection or flood statistic for use here. A game’s depiction of storms, water or weather would also be a creative representation, not evidence of actual local risk levels. The real-world point is simpler: the coastal beauty that helps define Miami is inseparable from exposure to serious weather and flooding hazards.
That tension gives the setting more meaning than a collection of sunny images. The same coastline can be a source of tourism, local identity and architectural inspiration while also presenting persistent risks. If Vice City uses the region’s water, beaches or wetlands as visual ingredients, the resemblance can prompt that broader association—but it cannot substitute for a detailed account of Miami’s environmental conditions.
How to separate confirmed setting facts from trailer interpretation
When evaluating claims about Vice City, distinguish what Rockstar has named from what a viewer or publication has inferred. That keeps a compelling visual comparison from turning into an unsupported map claim.
- Start with the official names. Rockstar identifies the fictional state as Leonida and the city as Vice City. Those names define the game’s stated setting.
- Describe visual matches as interpretations. Say that a scene resembles South Beach Art Deco hotels if that is what the imagery suggests; do not call a building a confirmed real landmark without an official identification.
- Keep the geography consistent. Specify whether you mean the City of Miami, Miami-Dade County or the wider South Florida region. They are not interchangeable.
- Use real-city figures with their qualifications. Attribute the approximately 467,171 residents, 57.7 percent foreign-born share and 35.87-square-mile area to the City of Miami’s 2024 report, which attributes the population figure to the University of Florida Bureau of Economic and Business Research.
- Do not treat atmosphere as evidence. A stylized view may capture a recognizable mood or design vocabulary without representing the region’s full architecture, demographics, geography or hazards.
What the comparison ultimately reveals
Vice City reveals less about the literal layout of Miami than about which parts of South Florida are easiest to recognize and dramatize. Coastal urbanism, tropical and nautical design, Art Deco imagery, and the suggestion of a larger landscape offer a compact visual vocabulary. The real city behind that vocabulary is more varied: it has several historic architectural traditions, a clearly defined municipal boundary distinct from the county and region, a diverse population, and longstanding exposure to hurricanes, storm surge and flooding.
That is why the most accurate reading is neither “Vice City is Miami” nor “the resemblance is only superficial.” It is a fictional setting built to evoke a real region through selected cues. The resemblance can be meaningful without being literal, and the differences are essential to understanding both the game’s world and the Miami it references.
