Gravitational lensing is the bending, magnifying and distortion of light by gravity. When a massive foreground galaxy, galaxy cluster or star lies between Earth and a more distant object, its curved spacetime changes the routes that the background light can take. Depending on the alignment and the lens’s mass, one source may appear brighter, stretched into arcs, split into several images or encircled by an Einstein ring.
Those appearances are not separate physical objects. They are different light paths from the same background source. By measuring the distortions, brightness changes and timing, astronomers can investigate faint galaxies, map invisible mass such as dark matter, find some exoplanets and study the large-scale expansion of the universe.

What gravitational lensing is
Mass curves spacetime, and light follows the curved geometry
In Einstein’s description of gravity, mass and energy curve spacetime. Light travels through that curved spacetime, so its path can bend as it passes a massive object. A foreground galaxy or cluster therefore acts as a gravitational lens for light emitted by a more distant galaxy or star.
The familiar glass-lens comparison is useful only for the result: both systems can make a source look magnified or produce more than one apparent image. A gravitational lens is not a piece of transparent material with a fixed focal point. Its effect comes from the distribution of mass and the geometry of spacetime. Because the foreground mass can send light toward the observer along several routes, lensing can create multiple images and arcs rather than one simply focused image.

One background object can produce several appearances
Suppose a distant galaxy sends light toward Earth while another galaxy lies near the line of sight. Light from the background galaxy that passes on different sides of the foreground mass can arrive from different apparent directions. An observatory may then record several images of the same source. The images can have different brightnesses, shapes and arrival times, even though they originate in one object.
If the source, lens and observer are almost perfectly aligned, the separate paths can merge into a nearly circular Einstein ring. More commonly, imperfect alignment produces partial rings, curved arcs or a set of distinct images. The exact appearance depends on the lens’s total mass, how that mass is distributed and the alignment among all three participants.
How astronomers identify and measure a lens
Lensing is inferred from patterns in background light, not from seeing gravity directly. A typical analysis follows this sequence:
- Locate a foreground mass and a background source. Survey images may show a relatively nearby galaxy or cluster in front of a much more distant galaxy. The redshifts, colors and apparent positions help establish which object is in front.
- Record the distortion. Astronomers measure the positions, curvature, sizes and brightness of arcs or multiple images. In a time-varying event, they also record how the source’s brightness changes.
- Model the lens mass. A model of the foreground galaxy, cluster and surrounding matter is adjusted until it reproduces the observed image positions and shapes. The model’s gravity includes matter that emits little or no light.
- Infer properties of the source and the lens. Once the lensing geometry is constrained, astronomers can estimate how much the source was magnified, recover information about the background object and map where mass lies in the foreground system.
- Compare many systems when the signal is subtle. Weak lensing often cannot be recognized reliably in a single galaxy. Researchers measure tiny, shared shape changes across large samples and use statistics to extract the mass signal.
The result is an indirect measurement: the light reveals how spacetime was bent, and the bending reveals the mass responsible for it.

Strong, weak and microlensing
Astronomers use three overlapping terms for the way a lensing signal appears. They describe observational regimes, not three different laws of gravity.
| Regime | What observers notice | What it is useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Strong lensing | Obvious arcs, multiple images or an Einstein ring when a massive lens and a background source align suitably | Magnifying distant sources and constraining the mass of foreground galaxies and clusters, including their dark matter |
| Weak lensing | Small stretches or displacements in the apparent shapes of many background galaxies | Statistical maps of mass and studies connected with the expansion of the universe |
| Microlensing | A temporary brightness change in a background star as a foreground star passes near the line of sight | Detecting some planets around the foreground star and studying otherwise faint foreground objects |
Strong lensing is visually dramatic, but weak lensing can contain information about mass spread over enormous areas. Microlensing is usually identified in a time series rather than a resolved arc: the foreground star is generally too small and too distant for its separate image to be seen.
Use 1: seeing galaxies that would otherwise be too faint
A gravitational lens can increase the apparent brightness of a background galaxy and stretch its image across more detector pixels. That natural magnification lets observatories examine sources that would be difficult or impossible to detect without the foreground mass.

Distortion is often an advantage rather than merely a nuisance. A long arc can expose details in a remote galaxy that would be blurred together in an unlensed view. Researchers can then analyze the galaxy’s stellar populations, gas and shape at an earlier stage of cosmic history. The reconstructed view remains model-dependent: different assumptions about the foreground mass can change the inferred magnification and the exact source shape.
Use 2: mapping dark matter and other invisible mass
Gravity responds to mass whether or not that mass shines. By measuring how a foreground cluster bends many background galaxies, astronomers can build a map of the cluster’s total mass. Subtracting the contribution of visible galaxies and hot gas reveals where additional, unseen mass must be located.
NASA’s Hubble overview describes this approach for the galaxy cluster Abell 1689. The cluster’s background arcs provide multiple constraints on the gravitational field, allowing researchers to map its dark matter rather than relying only on the light from cluster galaxies.
Weak lensing extends the idea to cases without obvious arcs. Each background galaxy may be stretched by only a tiny amount, and its intrinsic shape is unknown. A large sample is therefore essential: random orientations average out, while the coherent distortion caused by foreground mass remains. NASA says Euclid will analyze billions of galaxies to detect this subtle signal. The resulting statistical maps can trace how matter is distributed across large regions of the universe.

Use 3: finding exoplanets through microlensing
Microlensing turns a brief stellar alignment into a planet-detection opportunity. As a foreground star passes close to the apparent line of sight to a background star, the foreground star’s gravity temporarily magnifies the background star. The event produces a characteristic rise and fall in brightness.
If the foreground star has a planet, the planet’s gravity can add a shorter, additional deviation to that light curve. The timing and size of the extra amplification provide clues about the planet and its orbit around the foreground star. NASA’s Hubble material identifies the OGLE-2005-BLG-169 system as an example in which microlensing revealed an exoplanet.
Unlike a transit, microlensing does not require the planet to cross the foreground star’s visible disk. It can therefore reveal some systems at orbital distances and configurations that other methods may miss. The alignment is normally a one-time event: once the stars move apart on the sky, the magnification fades, so follow-up observations and careful light-curve analysis are crucial.
Use 4: investigating cosmic expansion with lensing
Strong and weak lensing also carry information about the universe’s large-scale geometry and expansion. The apparent positions and distortions of background sources depend on distances between the observer, lens and source. Comparing lensing observations with models of cosmic structure lets astronomers test how matter has accumulated and how the universe has expanded.
Best Value
The strength of this method is that it responds to total mass, including dark matter, rather than only to luminous objects. Its interpretation is not a single direct measurement: astronomers combine lens models, galaxy distances and large statistical samples. NASA describes gravitational lensing as relevant to studies of both dark matter and the expansion of the universe without assigning one universal precision to every lensing result.
A recent example: Euclid’s Einstein ring around NGC 6505
NASA reported on February 10, 2025 that the Euclid mission had identified an Einstein ring around the foreground galaxy NGC 6505. The galaxy is about 590 million light-years from Earth, while the background galaxy producing the ring is reported to be about 4.42 billion light-years away. The ring is an observed strong-lensing example: light from the more distant galaxy is bent around the nearer galaxy and appears as a near-circle.
The same NASA report describes Euclid’s larger survey goals as forecasts, not completed results. The mission is intended to map more than one-third of the sky, observe billions of galaxies out to distances of about 10 billion light-years and find around 100,000 strong gravitational lenses. “Around 100,000” is therefore an expected yield stated in the 2025 mission report, not a confirmed count already collected.

Each strong-lens system in such a survey can serve two purposes at once. Its arcs or ring constrain the foreground mass, while the magnified background galaxy becomes a target for studying a much more distant era of the universe. The many weakly lensed galaxies in the same survey provide the statistical measurements needed to map matter on a broader scale.
What a lensing image does—and does not—mean
- An arc is not a separate galaxy. It is a distorted image of a background source.
- Multiple images are not duplicate objects. They are light from one source that followed different paths around the lens.
- Magnification is not guaranteed to be uniform. Different parts of an extended galaxy can be magnified by different amounts, changing the apparent shape.
- A brightening event is not automatically a planet. Microlensing light curves must be modeled to distinguish a planetary deviation from other effects.
- No ring does not mean no lensing. Weak lensing can be real even when an individual image shows no obvious arc or split image.
These qualifications are why professional lensing studies use calibrated imaging, repeated observations and mass models rather than visual resemblance alone. Ordinary amateur telescopes are not expected to reproduce the survey measurements described here; the signals are generally faint, crowded, time-dependent or detectable only through large statistical datasets.
Why gravitational lensing matters
Lensing provides a way to study the universe using gravity as a measuring instrument. Strong lenses act as natural magnifiers of remote galaxies and expose the mass of foreground clusters. Weak lensing turns barely perceptible shape changes across billions of galaxies into maps of matter. Microlensing uses temporary changes in a star’s brightness to reveal planets that may never be directly imaged.
Together, these regimes connect visible light to invisible mass and to the geometry of cosmic distances. The central idea is simple—mass curves spacetime and bends light—but the scientific payoff is broad: distorted images become evidence about objects too faint, too distant or too dark to study by ordinary direct observation.
