There is no single safe temperature for every laptop GPU. The controlling limit is the maximum operating temperature published for your exact GPU and laptop, not a generic number. FurMark is intentionally harsher than normal games: NVIDIA describes it as an application that maximizes power draw “well beyond any real world application or game,” so it can produce unusually high readings and trigger protective throttling. As a practical first screen, FurMark’s guide says a stabilized temperature curve is usually below 85–90°C, but that range is only a heuristic. Stop at the lower, model-specific limit and stop sooner if the laptop becomes unstable.
The temperature rule that applies to your laptop
Start by identifying the complete graphics configuration: the laptop model, the exact GPU name, and whether the reading is the GPU core (sometimes called edge or average) or a hotspot/junction sensor. Two laptops with the same GPU family can have different power limits, cooling assemblies and firmware settings, so a number that is acceptable on one model may be too high on another.

Find the thermal specification in the GPU manufacturer’s documentation and the laptop maker’s support material. Use the lower applicable limit when the documents differ. A vendor specification generally describes the silicon’s operating boundary; an OEM may impose a lower limit to protect the laptop’s heat pipes, motherboard, memory or chassis. Do not treat a desktop-card specification as automatically valid for a mobile version.
- Published limit: the maximum temperature stated for your exact GPU or laptop configuration.
- Sensor type: core/average and hotspot/junction are separate measurements.
- Test conditions: FurMark version, preset, resolution, graphics API, ambient temperature, power mode and fan mode.
If you cannot establish the exact limit, do not use 90°C as permission to continue. Run only a brief, supervised check and use conservative stop conditions until you have the manufacturer’s specification.

Why FurMark can be hotter than a demanding game
FurMark is designed to maximize GPU power draw rather than reproduce a typical game workload. That creates a high, sustained heat load in a short period. A game may alternate between graphics, CPU, storage and frame-pacing work, while FurMark can keep the graphics processor near a continuous worst-case load. Consequently, a FurMark peak is not a prediction of the temperature you will see in every game.
NVIDIA warns that FurMark can activate the card’s protection mechanisms. Those mechanisms may reduce clocks or power to keep the hardware within its design envelope. A lower clock during the run is therefore not automatically a fault; it can be the expected response to an extreme workload. It becomes a concern when temperature continues rising, the published limit is exceeded, or the system shows instability.
FurMark’s own guidance offers a screening heuristic: after the initial climb, the curve should level off and remain usually below 85–90°C. “Usually” matters. This is not a universal maximum, and it does not override a lower limit specified for your particular mobile GPU.

Core temperature, hotspot and junction: which reading matters?
Monitoring software can expose several GPU sensors. The core or edge value is an average or representative temperature across the die. Hotspot, junction or hot spot is the hottest measured location. The two values can differ substantially because heat is not distributed perfectly across the chip or its cooling contact.
Use the sensor that the manufacturer’s specification addresses. If the documentation gives a junction limit, compare junction to that limit; if it specifies a core or GPU temperature, compare the corresponding reading. Record both when available so that a later test is genuinely comparable. A 90°C core result on one laptop is not equivalent to a 90°C hotspot result on another.
AMD’s published guidance for the Radeon RX 5700 series illustrates the distinction: up to 110°C junction temperature during typical gaming usage is described as expected and within specification. That statement is specific to those GPUs and that typical-gaming condition. It is not a universal FurMark limit, does not automatically apply to laptop implementations, and should not be used to justify a 110°C reading on a different model.

Is 85°C or 90°C safe?
| Observed result | How to interpret it | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Stable below the exact published limit and below roughly 85–90°C | Within the practical screening range, assuming the reading is the specified sensor and no symptoms occur. | Complete the supervised run you planned and record the conditions. |
| Stable at 85–90°C, but the model’s published limit is lower | The generic heuristic is irrelevant because the model-specific boundary controls. | Stop before or at the lower limit; do not continue to validate the heuristic. |
| Core below 90°C but hotspot/junction near its limit | The hottest sensor may be the governing value. | Compare the hotspot/junction reading with its own specification and stop if it reaches the limit. |
| Temperature rises continuously without leveling off | Cooling has not reached a stable equilibrium, even if the current number looks acceptable. | Stop the test and investigate airflow, fan response, power mode and thermal contact. |
| Any temperature accompanied by artifacts, a driver reset, freeze, black screen or shutdown | The system is not stable under this workload. | Stop immediately; temperature alone is not the only safety criterion. |
Therefore, “Should I stop at 90°C?” has a conditional answer. Stop if 90°C is at or above your exact sensor’s limit, if the curve is still climbing, or if instability appears. If the published limit is higher and the curve has stabilized without symptoms, 90°C may be an acceptable FurMark result, but it remains an extreme-load result rather than a target temperature.

FurMark should be supervised. Do not leave an unfamiliar laptop running an extreme stress test unattended, especially after changing drivers, firmware, thermal paste, fan control or power limits.
- Identify the hardware. In Windows, use the laptop’s system information or Device Manager to confirm the exact discrete or integrated GPU model. Then locate the GPU vendor’s thermal specification and the laptop manufacturer’s support information for that model.
- Return the system to a known baseline. Install a current, stable graphics driver and remove experimental overclocks or undervolts. If you changed a setting specifically to test it, document the change so you can restore the baseline.
- Prepare power and airflow. Connect the approved AC adapter. Place the laptop on a hard, level, ventilated surface; keep intake and exhaust openings clear. Do not run the test on bedding, a cushion or a surface that blocks vents.
- Open monitoring before FurMark. Display GPU temperature, hotspot/junction when available, clocks, power, fan speed and utilization. Make sure the temperature history or logging interval is short enough to capture a peak.
- Begin with a short run. Start with a conservative preset and resolution, then watch the first temperature rise and fan response. Remain at the keyboard or power button so you can stop promptly.
- Check for a plateau. A healthy cooling system under a fixed load should approach a stable range. A continuously rising curve, sudden fan failure or an unexpected power-mode change is a reason to stop rather than wait for a higher peak.
- Stop at the first warning. End the run immediately if the exact published limit is exceeded, if the laptop cannot stabilize, or if you see visual artifacts, a driver reset, a freeze, a black screen or a thermal shutdown.
- Record the result. Note the FurMark version, preset, resolution, graphics API, run duration, ambient temperature, adapter and power mode, fan mode, peak core temperature, peak hotspot/junction temperature, clocks and any symptoms.

| Variable | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|
| Exact GPU and laptop model | Mobile power limits, heatsinks, vapor chambers and firmware differ even within one GPU family. |
| FurMark version and preset | Workload behavior can change between versions and presets. |
| Resolution and graphics API | Higher rendering load and different APIs can alter power draw and clocks. |
| Ambient temperature | A warmer room raises the temperature of the air entering the cooler. |
| Adapter and power mode | Battery mode, balanced mode and high-performance mode can impose different GPU power limits. |
| Fan mode and cooling surface | Automatic, quiet and performance fan profiles produce different airflow. |
| Sensor used | Core/average and hotspot/junction values are not interchangeable. |
| Duration and peak versus plateau | A brief spike is different from a temperature that remains high after stabilization. |
| Clocks and symptoms | Throttling, artifacts or driver resets can indicate a problem even when the peak temperature looks ordinary. |
For repeatability, test at a similar room temperature, use the same adapter and power profile, select the same FurMark settings, and compare the stabilized portion of the run as well as the maximum value.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to stop immediately
Temperature is only one part of a safe-test decision. End FurMark without waiting for a crash when any of these conditions occurs:
- The relevant core or hotspot/junction reading reaches or exceeds the exact published limit.
- The temperature curve continues upward instead of settling.
- Fans do not ramp as expected, stop, or report an implausible reading.
- You see colored speckles, flashing polygons, checkerboards or other rendering artifacts.
- The graphics driver resets, the display goes black, the laptop freezes, or the system shuts down.
- Clocks collapse and remain abnormally low while temperature and power behavior are erratic.
After a forced stop, let the laptop cool, reboot if necessary, and return settings to baseline. Do not repeatedly rerun a failing test in the hope that the next attempt will pass.

Cooling measures that help—and what they cannot do
The basic requirement is unobstructed airflow on a hard, ventilated surface. Cleaning dust from external vents, ensuring the fan profile responds, and avoiding a hot room can improve the result. A cooling pad or ventilated stand is an optional aid when it supplies cleaner air to the intake; it may reduce temperatures, but the improvement depends on the laptop’s intake design.
No stand, pad or fan setting raises the GPU’s rated thermal limit. Better airflow cannot make an unstable overclock safe, and it cannot compensate for a failed fan, blocked heatsink, poor heatsink contact or a defective temperature sensor. If temperatures changed sharply after maintenance, check that the fans spin, vents are clear and the heatsink is seated correctly; hardware service may be required for persistent problems.
Understanding throttling during the test
Protective throttling is a control response: the laptop reduces clock speed, voltage or power to keep the GPU within its safety envelope. A modest clock reduction near a stable temperature can be normal under FurMark’s unusually heavy load. Throttling that begins at a temperature well below the documented limit, repeatedly oscillates, or accompanies visual errors suggests that another constraint—power delivery, firmware, driver behavior or cooling—may be involved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen diagnosing throttling, correlate the clock trace with temperature, power and fan speed. If temperature is high and clocks fall, cooling is the first area to examine. If temperature is moderate but power or clocks are capped, the laptop’s firmware or power profile may be the limiting factor rather than thermal saturation.
A practical decision rule
Use this order of precedence: exact published limit first, sensor identity second, stability third, and the 85–90°C FurMark heuristic last. A stabilized result below the correct limit with no artifacts or resets is generally a successful stress-test outcome. A number that looks acceptable in isolation is not safe if it belongs to the wrong sensor, exceeds the laptop’s own limit, or is still climbing.
Keep the test record with the laptop’s model and configuration. That makes future comparisons useful after a driver update, a seasonal change in room temperature or a fan-profile adjustment, instead of treating an isolated temperature number as a universal pass/fail grade.
