The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) uses AMD Radeon integrated graphics built into the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. ASUS ROG Canada lists the graphics engine as AMD RDNA 3 with 12 compute units, a maximum clock of 2.7 GHz and up to 8.6 teraflops. Those are vendor-published specifications, not independent game benchmarks.
“Integrated” means the GPU is part of the processor platform rather than a separate graphics card. It draws power from the same device budget as the CPU and uses the Ally X’s shared system memory. ASUS also sells an optional XG Mobile external graphics unit over USB4, but that accessory is separate from the Radeon GPU built into the handheld.

ASUS’s US specification page uses the shorter label “AMD Radeon Graphics” and does not repeat the Canadian page’s architecture, compute-unit, clock or teraflop figures. The detailed GPU numbers should therefore be attributed specifically to the Canadian configuration listing, rather than presented as identical wording on every regional page.

The GPU is inside the same processor platform
A conventional gaming desktop can pair a CPU with a separate graphics card that has its own board, power circuitry and video memory. The Ally X takes a different approach. Its Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme package combines general-purpose CPU cores, the Radeon graphics engine and an XDNA neural-processing unit. The Radeon block renders games and the desktop; the NPU is intended for supported artificial-intelligence workloads. ASUS’s statement that the device has an onboard NPU is not a claim about GPU performance.

Putting the graphics engine on the processor reduces the space, cooling hardware and power wiring required for a handheld. The trade-off is that the CPU and GPU share the Ally X’s thermal and electrical limits. A demanding game can make the graphics portion the largest consumer of the available power, while background CPU work, shader compilation or a crowded simulation can shift demand back toward the processor cores.
It uses shared system memory
The Ally X has 24 GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory rather than a separate pool of graphics VRAM. The operating system, CPU and Radeon GPU draw from that common pool. When a game needs more graphics memory for textures or frame buffers, it can reserve a larger portion of system RAM, leaving less for Windows and other applications.
Shared memory is why capacity and speed both matter. The LPDDR5X-8000 rating describes the memory technology and transfer speed listed by ASUS; it is not a guarantee of a particular game frame rate. Actual results also depend on the power mode, firmware, graphics driver, cooling conditions, game engine and selected resolution and quality settings.
Compute units are the GPU’s parallel engines
AMD’s RDNA architecture organizes shader resources into compute units. The Canadian specification identifies 12 CUs for this implementation. Compute-unit count gives a useful idea of the scale of the integrated GPU, but it is not a universal performance score. Two GPUs with the same number of CUs can perform differently because of clock speed, architecture, memory bandwidth, driver behavior and power limits.
How to read the Ally X GPU numbers
RDNA 3
RDNA 3 is the graphics architecture named by ASUS for the Ally X configuration. Architecture tells you how the shader, cache, display and media blocks are designed, but it does not by itself specify how a particular game will run. The operating system and AMD graphics driver determine which features a game can use, while the handheld’s power and temperature limits determine how long the GPU can sustain its rated clocks.
Up to 2.7 GHz
“Up to 2.7 GHz” is a ceiling, not a fixed operating speed. The GPU may run below that level when the system is on battery, when the selected operating profile has a lower power target, when temperatures rise or when the workload does not require maximum frequency. A short boost to 2.7 GHz also does not mean the GPU will hold that speed throughout a long play session.
Up to 8.6 teraflops
Teraflops describe theoretical floating-point throughput under specified assumptions about clock speed and the number of arithmetic operations completed per cycle. ASUS’s “up to 8.6 teraflops” figure is useful for identifying the class of the hardware, but it is not an FPS promise. It does not account for a game’s rendering techniques, ray-tracing workload, texture bandwidth, CPU overhead, shader compilation, upscaling mode or frame-pacing behavior.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not use the teraflop number alone to rank the Ally X against another handheld or a desktop graphics card. A meaningful comparison must match the exact processor configuration, memory capacity and speed, power setting, display resolution, in-game settings and test method.

How the integrated GPU drives the Ally X display
The built-in panel is 7 inches with a 1920×1080 native resolution and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The GPU can render at the panel’s native resolution, but a 120 Hz display does not mean every game will produce 120 frames per second. The refresh rate is the panel’s maximum update capability; the rendered frame rate depends on the game and the system’s current limits.
Rendering at a lower internal resolution can reduce the workload and leave more headroom for higher settings or steadier frame delivery. Conversely, native 1080p rendering with demanding effects can require substantially more GPU work. A sensible configuration starts with the game’s resolution and quality preset, then adjusts individual options that have the largest visual or performance cost.
Radeon software features available on the handheld
ASUS says Armoury Crate Special Edition supports Radeon features including Radeon Super Resolution, Radeon Image Sharpening and AMD Fluid Motion Frames. These features change how frames are rendered or presented, but their availability and usefulness vary by game and driver.
Radeon Super Resolution
Radeon Super Resolution can upscale a game rendered below the display’s native resolution. Lowering the internal render resolution reduces the number of pixels the GPU must shade; the upscaler then reconstructs an image for the 1920×1080 panel. Upscaling can improve performance, but fine detail and interface sharpness may differ from native rendering.
Radeon Image Sharpening
Radeon Image Sharpening applies a sharpening pass intended to restore some perceived detail after scaling or other processing. It is a visual adjustment, not additional GPU hardware, and the best level depends on the game’s art style and the chosen internal resolution.
AMD Fluid Motion Frames
AMD Fluid Motion Frames generates additional frames between rendered frames. Generated frames can make motion appear smoother, but they do not replace the underlying rendered frames and can affect latency or artifact behavior. ASUS’s feature support does not establish a particular game’s frame rate or image quality; those require testing the specific title with a stated driver, power mode and settings.
What the optional XG Mobile changes
ASUS describes ROG XG Mobile as an external graphics expansion that connects to the Ally X through USB4. The 2025 XG Mobile option can add up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, according to ASUS’s product overview. That is a separate accessory with its own enclosure, power requirements and connection path.
Using XG Mobile does not upgrade or replace the Ally X’s integrated Radeon GPU. Without the external unit, games use the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme’s built-in graphics. With it attached, supported software can use the much larger external GPU for workloads routed through that connection. Any comparison must identify whether results came from the integrated Radeon engine or the specific XG Mobile model.

Memory and storage details that are easy to confuse with GPU specifications
The 24 GB LPDDR5X-8000 figure describes system memory, not dedicated VRAM. It is available to both the CPU and GPU, and the amount assigned to graphics can change with the workload and operating system.
The standard storage device is a 1 TB M.2 2280 SSD. ASUS says the drive is upgradeable because it uses the standard 2280 form factor. Replacing that SSD can provide more room for games, but it does not add compute units, increase the Radeon clock or turn the integrated GPU into a discrete graphics card. Storage capacity affects how many games you can install, not how quickly the GPU renders them.
Make sure you have the 2025 model
The name is easy to misread because ASUS also sold a 2024 ROG Ally X. The product covered here is the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X, model RC73XA, built around the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform. The 2024 ROG Ally X used the earlier Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform and should not be assumed to have the same graphics configuration.
When checking a listing, receipt or support page, look for the “Xbox” wording, the RC73XA model code and the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor name. Regional specification pages can use different levels of detail, so the absence of RDNA 3 or teraflop wording on a page does not necessarily indicate different hardware; it may simply reflect shorter regional copy.
What these specifications do—and do not—tell you about gaming
The official figures establish the identity and theoretical scale of the GPU. They do not establish a universal performance ranking or a guaranteed frame rate. A realistic evaluation should account for all of the following:
- The game being tested and its graphics API.
- Resolution, quality preset, texture setting and effects such as ray tracing.
- Whether the game is running on battery or connected to power.
- The selected system power profile and any sustained thermal limit.
- Driver, firmware and game versions.
- Whether Radeon Super Resolution, Image Sharpening or Fluid Motion Frames is enabled.
- Frame-time consistency and input latency, not only the highest FPS number.
For example, a demanding new release at native 1080p can stress the 12-CU integrated GPU, while an older or better-optimized title at a lower internal resolution may feel smooth. Both outcomes are consistent with the same official hardware specification.
A practical way to assess performance on your own Ally X
- Confirm the model in Windows system information or the ASUS support information so you are testing the RC73XA rather than the 2024 Ally X.
- Record the game version, graphics driver and firmware version before changing settings.
- Choose one power condition—battery or AC—and keep it unchanged for the comparison.
- Set a fixed resolution and quality preset. If you use an upscaler or frame-generation feature, record its mode and quality setting.
- Play the same scene for several minutes after shaders have finished compiling. Note average frame rate, frame-time consistency, visible artifacts and control response.
- Change one setting at a time. This shows whether resolution, shadows, textures, effects or CPU-heavy options are responsible for a change.
This method produces a result that can be compared with another test only when the other test used the same game build, settings, power condition and measurement approach. It is more informative than quoting the 8.6-teraflop figure as if it were a guaranteed FPS value.
Bottom line
The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X uses AMD Radeon integrated graphics in its Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. ASUS ROG Canada specifies an RDNA 3 design with 12 compute units, up to 2.7 GHz and up to 8.6 teraflops, supported by 24 GB of shared LPDDR5X-8000 memory. Those numbers describe the built-in GPU’s design and theoretical ceiling. Actual gaming results depend on the game, resolution, settings, power profile, cooling and software. ROG XG Mobile is an optional external GPU route over USB4, not part of the Ally X’s integrated graphics.
