Short answer: Google documents Live Translate as a real-time display of translated conversation, not as a feature with a clearly documented “Save transcript” button. Google does document cloud-synced Translate history and a separate manual save action for Transcribe. Those are different systems. The public help pages currently reviewed do not say whether every Live conversation’s temporary transcript or audio is retained, for how long, or whether it is saved to your account.
You can still make informed privacy choices: check Translate history, review Google Account activity controls, manage Search Services History and its Save Media option, and sign out if you do not want cloud history in the Android app. None of those controls should be described as proof that every processing trace from a Live session has been erased.

What Live Translate actually does
Live Translate is the real-time mode in the Google Translate app. Google’s Android instructions describe Listening, Conversation, text-only and custom modes. In face-to-face Conversation mode, each speaker’s transcription and translation appears on a different half of the phone screen. Listening mode can work with the phone’s speakers or headphones. These descriptions explain what appears during the session; they do not promise that the displayed text is saved, nor do they promise that audio is discarded immediately.
The distinction matters because “the app showed a transcript” and “Google stored a transcript in your account” are separate claims. A transcript can be produced temporarily to translate speech without becoming a visible history item. Conversely, account-level activity settings can cover some Translate interactions without the Live screen offering a dedicated save command. Google’s current public pages do not connect every Live session to a specific retention period or storage destination.

Three features that are often confused
| Feature | What the interface does | Is an explicit save action documented? | Account and history behavior Google documents | Controls described by Google |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Live Translate | Shows real-time transcription and translation in modes such as Conversation, Listening, text-only and custom. | No dedicated “Save transcript” action is described in the Android Live Translate instructions. | Those instructions do not establish whether each session’s transient text or audio is saved to an account. | Use the general Translate history and Google Account activity controls as applicable; they are not a session-level retention statement. |
| Translate history | Stores translations that you can view in the app or on desktop, including starred entries on desktop. | History saving is automatic under the documented signed-in Android conditions; it is not the same as saving a Live transcript. | When signed in, app history can sync to a Google Account. Web & App Activity must be on for synced history. Signing out leaves only on-device history in the Android app. | Manage activity lets you delete all history, a date range or individual entries. Desktop instructions also cover clearing all history, deleting one entry and starring translations. |
| Transcribe | Creates a longer transcription in its own workflow. | Yes. Google’s instruction says: “After you’ve completed your transcription, at the top, tap Save transcript.” | Saved items appear in a Saved transcripts area described for Transcribe. | Manage saved transcripts through the Transcribe interface. This documented workflow does not prove that Live conversations are saved in the same way. |
The table’s most important limitation is the first row: Google has not published a universal statement saying that every Live transcript is stored, or that no Live audio is stored. Treat Live display, Translate history and Transcribe storage as separate questions.
Does Google Translate save conversations?
There is no single answer that applies to every meaning of “save.” If you mean “does the phone show text while people are speaking,” yes: that is the purpose of Live Translate. If you mean “does Google put a complete recording and transcript of every Live session into my account,” the current feature documentation does not establish that. If you mean “can Translate activity be associated with my account,” Google documents that signed-in Android history can sync when Web & App Activity is enabled.
Google’s Android history instructions say translations automatically save to cloud when you are signed in, with Web & App Activity on required for synced history. That statement concerns translation history, not a guarantee that a two-person Live conversation is archived as one complete transcript. A history entry may represent a translation interaction without containing the full conversational exchange, and the public help text does not define the mapping for every Live mode.

Google Translate Help states: “Important: If you don’t want to use cloud history in the app, you must sign out of your account.” On Android, Google says signing out limits the app to on-device history. This reduces account-linked history synchronization, but it should not be read as a promise that audio or temporary processing never leaves the device, or that other Google services cannot have separate records governed by their own settings.

Does Google Translate keep a transcript?
Live Translate necessarily handles speech or text in order to display a translation, but Google’s current Android Live instructions do not describe a user-facing Save transcript control for that session. The explicit save wording belongs to Transcribe: after completing a Transcribe session, tap Save transcript, then find it in Saved transcripts. Because the two features have different instructions and storage areas, you should not assume that closing Live automatically creates a saved transcript, or that Live offers the same retrieval option.
If you need a reusable record, use the workflow Google labels Transcribe and save it deliberately. If you are using Live for an ephemeral conversation, avoid telling participants that the session is definitely recorded or definitely never retained; the public documentation does not support either absolute statement.
Can Google Translate save audio?
Google’s broader Search Services History documentation says activity from covered services, including Translate, can involve text, images, audio and a related transcript. It also describes a Save Media setting that controls whether supported media from Search services interactions is saved with history. The page gives examples such as Translate language-learning audio recordings, but it does not specifically identify Live Translate conversation sessions.

Do not substitute Google Assistant’s audio-recording setting for a Translate answer. Google’s Assistant help discusses voice interactions with Assistant and warns that audio may be saved in other places; it does not define how Translate Live handles audio. A setting labeled for Assistant cannot be treated as a master switch for Translate.
How to review and delete Translate history on Android
These steps address account-linked history that Google documents. They are not a guarantee that every transient Live-processing artifact is covered.
- Open Google Translate and review History. Look for entries that the app has associated with your translation activity. The exact layout can vary by Android version and app release.
- Open Manage activity. Google’s Android instructions direct users to account activity controls where they can inspect and delete saved activity.
- Choose the scope of deletion. Google documents options to delete all history, a selected date range or individual entries. Select the narrowest range that meets your need if you want to preserve unrelated history.
- Check synchronization conditions. Cloud-synced history requires that you are signed in and that Web & App Activity is on. If you do not want cloud history in the app, sign out as Google instructs.
- Allow for propagation. Google warns that clearing history can take up to a couple of hours to appear in the app. Do not assume that a still-visible item immediately after deletion means the request failed.
After deletion, review the account activity page again and check any other signed-in devices. The documented delay is an app-display delay, not a published promise about deletion timing for every backend copy or legally required record.

How to manage Translate history on desktop
Google’s desktop Translate help documents four practical actions:
Rank #4
- PRIVACY DISPLAY: Automatically hide your screen from those beside you. The built-in privacy display can be preset¹ to turn on when receiving notifications, typing passwords, or using specific apps
- TYPE IT IN. TRANSFORM IT FAST: Enhance any shot in seconds on your smartphone by using Photo Assist² with Galaxy AI.³ Add objects, restore details, or apply new styles by simply typing or tapping
- NIGHTS, CAPTURED CLEARLY: From gigs to city lights, record and capture moments after dark with clarity using Nightography so your photos and videos stay crisp and clear on your Samsung Galaxy
- MAKE IT. EDIT IT. SHARE IT: Turn everyday moments into something personal with creative tools built right into your mobile phone, whether it’s a special contact photo, custom wallpaper, an invitation or more⁴
- HELP THAT KEEPS UP: Stay in the moment while Now Nudge with Galaxy AI helps you respond faster and stay organized with smart suggestions⁵ that appear exactly when you need them on your phone
- View your translation history.
- Clear all history.
- Remove an individual history entry.
- Star selected translations for easier retrieval.
Desktop history is useful for translations you intentionally revisit, but it does not turn the desktop list into a definitive index of every Live conversation. If a Live session is not represented as a normal history item, deleting visible entries cannot demonstrate that a transient transcript or audio stream never existed elsewhere.
How Search Services History and Save Media fit in
Search Services History is a broader Google Account control for activity across listed Search services, including Translate. Google describes possible inputs as text, images, audio and related transcript, and says Save Media governs whether supported media from Search services interactions is saved with history.
- Open your Google Account activity controls. Find the section labeled Search Services History using the account settings interface currently shown for your account.
- Review the activity categories and retention choices. Read which services and media types the control covers rather than assuming it applies identically to every Translate mode.
- Inspect Save Media. Decide whether supported media from covered interactions should be saved with history. The control’s wording is broader than Live Translate and does not identify every session type.
- Delete activity where offered. Use the account’s Manage activity tools to remove saved items. Recheck the settings after Google’s interface finishes updating.
Google can change labels, availability and presentation while it updates account settings. If your screen does not show a control described in older help, use the current wording presented in your account and consult the current regional help page.
What Google’s privacy policy does—and does not—answer
Google’s Privacy Policy, effective May 26, 2026, says its purpose is to explain what information Google collects, why it collects it, and how users can update, manage, export and delete information. The policy lists media from interactions among possible activity data and says history and personalization settings can let users choose whether some information is saved to an account and how it is used.

That is general policy language. It gives context for account controls, but it is not a Live Translate retention schedule. The policy does not, by itself, answer how long a particular Live session’s temporary transcript remains available, whether its audio is retained, or which processing copies are covered when you delete history.
Privacy choices for a sensitive conversation
Before starting
- Tell participants that a translation app will process speech and display text; obtain consent where your circumstances require it.
- Decide whether you need an account-linked history at all. Signing out on Android prevents the app from using cloud history as described by Google.
- Check Search Services History and Save Media before the conversation, not after, if the subject is confidential.
- Use text-only mode when appropriate to avoid microphone capture, recognizing that this changes how the conversation works rather than creating a universal privacy guarantee.
During the session
- Watch which mode is active: Conversation, Listening, text-only or custom.
- Keep the phone’s screen and speaker behavior in mind. Face-to-face mode displays each speaker’s text on separate halves; Listening mode can use speakers or headphones.
- Do not promise participants that the session is either permanently saved or immediately destroyed unless you have a specific, current statement for your device, account and region.
Afterward
- Review Translate History and Manage activity.
- Delete individual entries, a date range or all history as appropriate.
- Check broader Search Services History and Save Media controls.
- If you used Transcribe and intentionally saved a transcript, manage it in Saved transcripts rather than assuming it is part of Live history.
Common mistakes and the accurate correction
| Mistake | Why it is misleading | More accurate wording |
|---|---|---|
| “Google saves every Live transcript.” | The Live help page does not make that universal claim. | Google documents real-time display and separate history controls, but not a definitive retention rule for every Live session. |
| “Google never stores Live audio.” | General Search Services History documentation discusses audio and media, without identifying every Live session. | Audio retention for a specific Live session is not settled by the public feature pages reviewed. |
| “The Assistant audio toggle controls Translate.” | Assistant settings describe Assistant voice interactions, not Translate behavior. | Use Translate and Google Account controls that explicitly cover the relevant activity. |
| “Deleting app history erases every copy immediately.” | Google notes that deletion can take up to a couple of hours to appear in the app and does not publish a universal backend-erasure timeline here. | Delete the documented history, allow for the stated delay, and avoid claiming that every processing trace is gone. |
| “Transcribe’s Save transcript button proves Live saves transcripts.” | The button belongs to a different feature and workflow. | Transcribe has an explicit manual save action; Live’s Android instructions do not document one. |
Bottom line for the four questions people ask
Does Google Translate save conversations? Live displays translated conversation, while account-linked Translate history can sync under documented Android conditions. Google does not publish a complete, session-level retention statement for every Live conversation.
Does Google Translate keep a transcript? Live’s help page does not document a dedicated save action. Transcribe does: tap Save transcript after finishing, then use Saved transcripts.
Can I delete my Google Translate history? Yes. Android Manage activity supports all history, date-range or individual deletion; desktop help supports clearing all history and removing individual entries. Google says the app may take up to a couple of hours to reflect clearing.
Does Google Translate save audio? General Search Services History controls discuss audio and saved media for covered services, but the reviewed documentation does not identify whether every Live conversation is retained. Check the current account controls for your region and app version instead of relying on an Assistant setting or an absolute promise.
