Bring a complete set of goalie equipment that fits you, that you already know how to play in, and that the team’s equipment staff has approved. Have the essentials ready—pads, pants, chest and arm protection, blocker, catcher, mask, skates and stick—but confirm with the club what it expects and what it will provide. The NHL has not published a universal call-up packing list in the sources available here, so treat this as a practical preparation checklist, not an official mandate.
Start with gear that fits and feels familiar
A last-minute call-up is a poor time to break in unfamiliar equipment or assume another goalie’s gear will work for you. NHL Rule 11 treats goalie equipment sizing as individual: a nominal size match does not establish a safe or suitable fit. Bring your own familiar gear where possible, and contact the team’s equipment staff as soon as you receive the call to check what they want you to bring.

Use the checklist below to get organized, then follow the club’s directions. It is not a statement that every item is an NHL-mandated requirement or that the team will supply—or will not supply—any particular piece.

- Leg pads
- Goalie pants
- Chest and arm protector
- Blocker and catching glove
- Approved goalie mask

Personal fit and preparation items
- Base layers and jersey-compatible underlayers
- Jock or jill
- Neck and throat protection appropriate to current rules and team policy
- Any personal fit adjustments you rely on
- Spare skate laces and tape
Ask the equipment staff whether the club supplies any of these items, whether it needs to inspect or approve your gear, and whether there are team-specific instructions. The available NHL sources do not establish what a club provides to a recalled goalie.

Check the current equipment rules, especially for fit
NHL equipment rules are more specific than a simple list of items. The 2025–26 NHL Official Rules, Rule 11.2, state that leg pads must be anatomically proportional and size-specific. That rule gives an 11-inch maximum extreme width and gives the League discretion over maximum height based on individual measurements. It also includes construction requirements.
Those are 2025–26 figures and wording, not confirmed 2026–27 specifications. The current 2026–27 rulebook is linked from NHL.com, but its PDF was not available in readable form in the sources reviewed here. Check the current-season text and let the club’s equipment staff confirm compliance rather than treating last season’s measurements as current.

Chest and arm protection also has proportionality requirements. NHL.com reporting on the NHL and NHLPA rule introduced in 2018 describes the protector as needing to be anatomically proportional and size-specific. In practical terms, use equipment fitted to your body and do not assume a larger piece is acceptable simply because it can be worn.
Know which kind of call-up you are preparing for
For the 2026–27 season, NHL.com reported on October 2, 2026, that every team is required to have an emergency backup goalie (EBUG) on its roster. The report says the EBUG dresses with the team, wears No. 00, and practices and travels with the team. It also describes EBUG eligibility limits: no NHL game under a standard player contract, no more than 80 professional games, and no professional hockey in the previous three seasons.

Those conditions describe rostered emergency backups; they should not be applied automatically to every injured-player recall or contracted NHL goalie. The report’s description of a prepared, traveling EBUG is a reason to have your equipment ready, but it does not specify a universal kit or say which pieces the club supplies.

Contact the club promptly when called and ask for its current instructions on equipment, arrival, inspection and any paperwork. A 2020 NHL account said an EBUG could be eligible to play for either team and that a called EBUG signed an amateur tryout contract before going on the ice. That is historical process context, not a complete current guide to contract procedure; do not rely on it instead of the team’s instructions.
