What Giant Tortoises Eat—and How They Shape Island Ecosystems

Giant tortoises are broad plant eaters rather than single-food specialists. Depending on the island and habitat, they graze grasses and herbs, browse leaves and woody plants, eat fruits and cactus, and carry seeds and nutrients as they move. Their ecological influence extends beyond what they swallow: repeated feeding, trampling, trail-making and digging alter which plants survive and where new plants establish.

The clearest long-term evidence comes from the Galápagos. On Española Island, tortoise access reduced herbaceous cover and woody-plant regeneration while increasing grass cover. That result does not describe every island: food supply, rainfall, vegetation, tortoise density and other animals determine the outcome. Aldabra tortoises provide a useful comparison because official species information describes them mainly as grazers and browsers of grasses and woody plants.

What do giant tortoises eat?

Galápagos tortoises eat a wide range of plants

Scholarly accounts describe Galápagos giant tortoises as generalist herbivores that consume dozens of plant species. A tortoise may crop grasses and herbs, browse leaves and shrubs, eat fallen or standing fruit, and feed on cactus tissue where it is available. The exact menu follows the habitat: a humid upland forest offers different foods from a dry lowland savannah or a seasonally parched coastal zone.

This flexibility matters ecologically. A generalist can keep feeding when one plant declines, changes elevation or becomes unavailable in a dry season. It also means that tortoises do not exert the same pressure on every plant community. The species and growth forms they encounter determine whether their feeding looks primarily like grazing, browsing, fruit removal or cactus consumption.

Human-altered vegetation can change the menu

A study of migratory tortoises on an island occupied by people found that introduced plants made up a growing share of the animals’ diet with elevation. That observation shows that altered vegetation can enter the food web; it does not show that introduced plants are preferred, nutritious, harmless or desirable. Managers must identify the plants being eaten and their effects rather than treating “eaten by tortoises” as proof that a plant belongs in the ecosystem.

Aldabra: grasses and woody browse

The Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute summarizes Aldabra tortoises this way: “They are grazers and browsers, feeding mainly on grasses and woody plants.” The profile also notes that an Aldabra tortoise may knock over small trees or shrubs to reach leaves. That behavior combines browsing with a physical disturbance that can open a patch in otherwise dense vegetation.

The Smithsonian’s zoo menu includes salad, hay, grasses, weeds, cactus pad, carrots, sweet potatoes and browse. This is a managed diet for animals under professional care, not a feeding list for wild tortoises and not guidance for approaching or feeding them.

How feeding changes plant abundance and structure

Grazing and browsing remove living plant material

Every bite removes leaves, stems, flowers, fruit or cactus tissue that would otherwise remain on the plant. Repeated cropping can keep seedlings short, reduce the chance that a shrub reaches reproductive size and redirect a plant community toward forms that tolerate frequent grazing. Browsing can also change the physical shape of vegetation, creating shorter, more open patches beside taller stands.

What the Española Island study measured

A Conservation Letters study (published online in 2022 and in a 2023 issue) combined an eight-year access-and-exclosure comparison with 15 years of landscape vegetation mapping on Española Island. In plots where tortoises could enter, herbaceous plant cover and the number of regenerating woody plants declined, while grass cover increased. The landscape analysis found that tortoise densities of about 1–2 animals per hectare halted woody-plant incursion and shifted the savannah-type vegetation toward more grass.

The density figure is a result for that Española study landscape, with its particular climate, soils, plant community, history of goat removal and recovering tortoise population. It is not a universal stocking recommendation for other islands.

Cactus fruit and pads

On Española, tortoises rapidly consumed available Opuntia fruits and pads. Plots that excluded tortoises accumulated three to ten times more fruits and pads than accessible plots. The study recorded too few cactus seedlings to evaluate cactus regeneration, so the result measures accumulated food material in those plots, not a demonstrated whole-island cactus decline.

How much vegetation do they consume?

Elizabeth A. Hunter’s 2021 chapter on the ecological role of Galápagos giant tortoises reports likely historical densities of at least 2.5 tortoises per hectare and possibly more than 500 kilograms of tortoise biomass per hectare across vegetated Galápagos ecosystems. Those are synthesis estimates, not a census of every island.

Galápagos Conservancy uses an educational estimate of more than 500 pounds of vegetation eaten annually per tortoise. Because that figure is presented by the conservation organization rather than as a peer-reviewed, species-wide measurement, it should be read as an approximate communication figure, not a universal consumption rate.

How tortoises move seeds and nutrients

Seeds survive a trip through the gut

Tortoises swallow fruits and other plant material containing seeds. Some seeds pass through the digestive tract and are deposited in dung, potentially far from the parent plant. Movement therefore connects patches that would be separated if seeds simply fell beneath the original canopy. Conditions in the dung can also provide a small package of moisture and nutrients when a seed begins to germinate.

Darwin Volcano and the goat-eradication context

The Galápagos National Park Directorate describes seed dispersal in tortoise droppings as part of vegetation recovery indicators at Darwin Volcano after feral goats were eradicated in 2006. Tortoises can help move seeds through a recovering landscape, but that account is not a controlled test that isolates tortoise effects from goat removal, rainfall, plant succession or other management actions.

The Smithsonian’s Aldabra profile adds that seeds passing through tortoises can become food for other species. A tortoise thus participates in several linked pathways: it eats a fruit, transports the seed, deposits nutrients and later leaves that dung available to insects and other animals.

Why trails, trampling and digging matter

Trails create movement corridors

Large tortoises repeatedly use routes between feeding, resting and watering areas. Their feet press down or break vegetation, producing persistent trails through grass and shrub. Trails can expose mineral soil, alter water flow over a small area and make some locations easier for other animals to cross.

Digging makes bare patches

Tortoises dig or scrape for resting and nesting sites. Disturbed ground differs from an undisturbed plant mat: seeds may contact soil more easily, while existing roots and seedlings may be removed. The result is a patchier landscape with a mixture of tall vegetation, grazed turf, trails and bare ground.

These effects are not automatically beneficial. Disturbance can create establishment sites for native plants, but it can also damage slow-growing vegetation or help an invasive plant colonize exposed soil. Whether a patch improves habitat depends on the island’s species, rainfall and management history.

How tortoises fit into island restoration

Rewilding aims to restore processes, not just animal numbers

Galápagos conservation programs breed, release and monitor giant tortoises on islands where populations were depleted or lost. The ecological goal is larger than recovering a head count: managers want grazing, browsing, seed transport and physical disturbance to resume. On Española, vegetation changed as tortoise populations recovered, demonstrating that the animals can act as ecosystem engineers.

Releasing tortoises does not guarantee that every missing ecosystem function returns. Plant communities may have crossed thresholds, predators or competitors may be absent, invasive species may remain and climate conditions may have changed. Restoration plans therefore need measurements of vegetation, recruitment, seed movement and animal density after releases.

Monitoring at Darwin Volcano

An official park update reported that 1,150 tortoises were surveyed and marked, with the population estimated at about 2,000. Thirty scientists and park rangers worked across roughly 200 square kilometres for 10 days and collected fecal samples for later diet analysis. Those data can improve management decisions, but the population estimate and recovery indicators should not be presented as a controlled demonstration that tortoises alone caused the observed ecosystem changes.

Why density and place must be evaluated together

A tortoise density that limits woody encroachment in one savannah may over-browse a smaller or drier plant community elsewhere. Managers should pair density estimates with forage availability, seasonal rainfall, plant regeneration and the condition of sensitive species. The Española threshold of 1–2 tortoises per hectare is a useful case study, not a target to copy without local evidence.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

  • Well established: giant tortoises eat many kinds of vegetation; feeding removes plant material; movement creates trails and disturbed ground; seeds can pass through their digestive tracts; and tortoises can alter plant cover and woody regeneration.
  • Established in a defined setting: Española access plots and landscape maps showed lower herbaceous cover and woody regeneration, higher grass cover and a density-associated halt in woody incursion.
  • Still context-dependent: the direction and size of effects on another island, plant community or tortoise population.
  • Not demonstrated by the available accounts: that introduced plants are always preferred, that consuming cactus fruit causes island-wide cactus collapse, or that reintroductions alone restore every ecosystem component.

How to watch wild giant tortoises responsibly

Wild tortoises should be observed without feeding, touching or blocking their routes. Feeding can change natural behavior and expose animals to inappropriate foods; a zoo menu is not a wild-care recommendation. Keep distance, remain on designated paths, avoid standing on trails and follow park instructions about photography and movement. Conservation depends on tortoises continuing to choose their own foods and routes, so visitors should leave both animals and the vegetation undisturbed.
