Gemini Live can hear your spoken conversation and, on supported Android experiences, can also receive video from your phone’s camera, a live view of your full screen, and context from enabled Connected Apps. You must turn on camera or screen sharing yourself. Google says screen sharing includes everything visible on the display, including notifications.
Storage and model-improvement use depend on your Gemini Apps Activity settings. With Keep Activity on, recordings, transcripts and other content shared with Live can be saved in Gemini Apps Activity. With it off, Google says Live chats may still remain in your account for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback. Live audio, video and screen shares have a separate improvement setting that is off by default.

What Gemini Live can access
Gemini Live is a spoken, back-and-forth mode in the Gemini mobile app or Gemini’s mobile-assistant experience. The microphone is the basic input, while camera, screen and connected-service access are additional capabilities that require your action or account permissions.

Live processes what you say through the device microphone so it can respond in real time. You can mute the microphone, put the session on hold or end it. Muting affects the microphone only; it does not automatically stop a camera stream or an active screen share.

Your camera view
You can deliberately turn on camera streaming to show Gemini what the phone is seeing. This can provide visual context such as an object, document or room. Camera sharing stops when you put Live on hold, leave the Gemini app or lock the screen. It resumes automatically only when you put Live on hold and then continue the same session; leaving the app or locking the phone does not create an automatic restart.
Your phone screen
Screen sharing is an explicit action, separate from the microphone and camera controls. Google states that “your full screen is shared with Gemini,” so anything currently visible can be included: app content, messages, account details, one-time codes, notification previews and other private material. You can stop sharing from Gemini or from the phone’s Screen Sharing notification. Screen sharing ends when Live is put on hold or the screen locks, and it does not automatically restart afterward.
Connected Apps and services
When available and enabled for your account, Live chats can use context or support tasks through integrated services. Google’s guide lists examples including Calendar, Keep, Tasks, Home, Spotify and YouTube. Availability is being rolled out gradually and the list can change, so an integration shown for one account or region may not appear for another.

Other information in Gemini Apps
Google’s broader Gemini Apps Privacy Notice describes categories such as prompts, files and other content you share, device and app information, and information from connected services. Those categories describe what Gemini Apps may process generally; they should not be read as proof that every category is automatically available in every Live conversation. Live receives the content you provide through its active inputs and the services you have connected.
What you control while a Live session is running
The controls are independent, which matters when you are trying to stop a particular kind of exposure.

Where Gemini Live is available
Google’s current help documentation describes Live on Android through the Gemini mobile app or Gemini as the mobile assistant. The same guide says Live is not currently available in the Gemini web app or Google Messages. Google also notes that feature updates are released gradually, so the platform and controls shown in your account can change.
If a camera or screen option is missing, first confirm that you are using a supported Android experience and the latest available Gemini app. A missing option can also reflect a staged rollout, account type, regional availability or an administrator restriction rather than a problem with the phone.

How Google stores and uses Live data
The main setting is Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity. Google describes a second, separate control for using Live audio, video and screen shares to improve services. These settings have different effects and should not be treated as one privacy switch.

Turning Keep Activity off therefore does not mean that no processing occurs. The up-to-72-hour period is a service-retention term, not a promise that the conversation is discarded immediately or that the service can operate without processing it.
The separate setting for improving services with raw media
Google distinguishes transcripts from the underlying audio, video and screen-share material. Its privacy guidance says those raw media types are not used to improve services by default. An additional activity control can permit that use, and the control requires Keep Activity to be on.
This distinction lets you evaluate two questions separately: whether a record of the interaction is retained in Gemini Apps Activity, and whether the raw Live media may be used for service improvement. Check both controls rather than assuming that changing Keep Activity alone answers both questions.

How to review or change your controls
Google can move labels as Gemini evolves, but the relevant controls are documented in its activity-management pages. Use the following process and confirm the wording shown for your account.
- Open Google’s Manage & delete your activity in Gemini Apps help page and follow the link to Gemini Apps Activity for the Google Account used by Live.
- Check whether Keep Activity is on or off. Choose the setting that matches your retention preference, remembering that Google still describes up to 72 hours of storage when it is off.
- In the same activity controls, find the separate option for audio and Live recordings or for using audio, video and screen shares to improve Google services. It is off by default; enabling it requires Keep Activity to be on.
- Review existing entries and delete individual items or available ranges when you do not want them retained in the activity view. Deleting activity does not undo information that another person has already seen or copied.
- Before a sensitive conversation, open the Live controls and verify the microphone, camera and screen indicators. Stop screen sharing from the Screen Sharing notification as soon as the task is complete.
- If the account belongs to an employer or school, ask the administrator which activity, retention and Connected Apps policies apply. Personal settings may not override organization controls.

Practical privacy precautions
Before turning on the camera
- Check the background for people, paperwork, badges, addresses or screens that do not need to be shown.
- Ask permission before recording or including another person. Google’s Privacy Hub specifically tells users to respect others’ privacy and ask permission before including them in a Live chat.
- Use the hold or end control when the visual context is no longer needed.
Before sharing the screen
- Close or hide messages, password managers, financial pages and authentication prompts.
- Clear notification previews or enable a device mode that suppresses them while sharing.
- Remember that choosing one app to discuss does not limit the share to that app; Google describes the shared content as the full screen.
- End sharing from the system notification, then confirm that the sharing indicator disappears.
When using Connected Apps
- Check the Google Account currently active in Gemini; a work account can have different services and administrator rules from a personal account.
- Ask for only the task or context needed instead of volunteering unrelated calendar, notes or media details.
- Revisit connected-service permissions if you stop using an integration.
Common misunderstandings
“Muting Live stops everything I am showing.”
No. Muting silences the microphone. Google’s Live instructions say video or screen sharing continues while muted, so stop those streams separately.
“Locking the phone means the session will resume sharing later.”
No. Locking stops camera and screen sharing. Camera can resume only after the hold-and-continue flow described by Google; screen sharing does not automatically restart.
“Keep Activity off means Google keeps nothing.”
No. Google says Live chats can remain in the account for up to 72 hours for service delivery and feedback processing.
“The improvement setting is automatically on if Keep Activity is on.”
No. Google describes raw Live audio, video and screen shares as excluded from service improvement by default. The separate control must be enabled, and it requires Keep Activity to be on.
“Every Gemini Apps data category is automatically available to Live.”
No. The Privacy Notice covers Gemini Apps broadly. In a Live session, access depends on what you share and which supported services you have connected and enabled.

Live is best treated like a participant that can receive any microphone audio and any image you deliberately expose through camera or screen sharing. The safest workflow is to start with voice only, add camera or screen access for a specific purpose, and stop that access immediately afterward. For organizational accounts, confirm policy with the administrator before relying on personal activity choices.
Feature availability and privacy controls can change. Check Google’s Live instructions and Privacy Hub again when the account, app version or administrator policy changes, especially before using Live with confidential work, health, financial or identity information.
