What Gemini in Chrome Can See—and What It Cannot

Short answer: Gemini in Chrome normally receives the page in your active tab when you start a new chat. You can add other recent tabs yourself, up to 10, and Gemini uses the tabs you select. Chromium’s disclosure says a shared tab’s full content, media and URL are sent to Google. A shared Google Workspace page is a special case: Google says Gemini may access the Workspace account to refer to an entire document, including material not loaded in the visible tab. Gemini does not have documented, unrestricted access to every tab or every screen on your computer.

What Gemini in Chrome sees by default

Google Chrome Help describes a specific starting behavior: when Gemini in Chrome opens a new chat, the current tab is shared by default and used to answer the prompt. “Current tab” means the page active in the Chrome window at that moment, not a promise that Gemini is watching everything you browse.

The sharing is about page data, not merely a screenshot. Chromium’s user-interface disclosure states: “When you choose to share the current tab with Gemini, the tab’s full content, media and URL are sent to Google.” That wording matters. A page can contain text, images, video or audio elements, structured data and a web address; the notice covers the tab’s full content and media rather than only the words currently visible in the viewport.

You can remove the current tab from a conversation. Before asking about confidential material, look for the visible sharing indicator and open the shared-tab controls so you know exactly what is attached to the chat.

Does Gemini see every tab you have open?

No documented behavior says that Gemini in Chrome automatically reads every open tab. Google’s help documentation describes two scopes:

  • The active tab is included by default when a new Gemini in Chrome chat starts, unless you change that behavior or remove the tab.
  • Additional tabs are included only when you select them for sharing. Chrome Help lists a limit of up to 10 recent open tabs across browser windows.

“Recent” and the exact picker presentation can change as Chrome is updated. The practical rule is to treat the tabs shown in Show shared tabs as the source set for the current conversation. A tab that is open somewhere in Chrome but not listed as shared is not documented as automatically available to that chat.

Sharing a tab is also different from giving Gemini a permanent browser-wide feed. The documented flow is user-controlled selection for a chat. Turning off automatic sharing changes the default; it does not establish that manual sharing is impossible.

What exactly is sent to Google?

The Chromium interface text provides the clearest operational description: when you choose to share a tab, its full content, media and URL are sent to Google. This is a product disclosure, not an independent measurement of how every website is processed. It does mean you should not assume that only a highlighted paragraph or the pixels you can currently see are transmitted.

Google also displays a further notice: “Conversations about shared tabs may be seen by human reviewers to improve Gemini.” That statement describes a possible review of conversations associated with shared tabs. It does not, by itself, specify a review rate, retention period or the handling of every other Gemini conversation. If your organization prohibits sending a page to an external service or human review, do not share that page.

What the browser scope does not establish

The available product documentation does not establish categorical rules for every hidden element, password field, browser extension, private-browsing window, operating-system screen or another application. Do not turn the documented scope into promises such as “Gemini can never see a password” or “Gemini can read only visible text.” The safe statement is narrower: Gemini in Chrome uses the current tab and any tabs you explicitly share, subject to the page and account behavior Google documents.

Ordinary webpages versus Google Workspace pages

A normal webpage is generally handled through the tab content you share. Google identifies a broader exception for a shared Workspace page, such as a Google Docs document. In that situation, Gemini may directly access the Workspace account to refer to the whole document, including content beyond what is available in the tab.

This means a document can be a different privacy case from an article or shopping page. The visible browser tab may show only one section, a collapsed outline or a portion of a long file, while account-level access could let Gemini use more of the document. Treat a shared document as authorization to process the document in its Workspace context, not as a request limited to the current viewport.

Questions to ask before sharing a document

  • Is the document owned by you, your employer or another organization?
  • Does it contain customer data, legal material, health information, credentials or confidential plans?
  • Would the document owner permit its contents to be sent to Google for this purpose?
  • Do your Workspace administrator or company policies impose stricter rules than the consumer product notice?

If the answer to any of these is unclear, do not share the tab until you have confirmed the applicable policy.

How to inspect and remove shared tabs

Use the controls in Gemini in Chrome rather than relying on memory about which page was active.

  1. Open Gemini in Chrome. Start the chat from the Chrome control that launches Gemini in Chrome, then wait for the chat interface to appear.
  2. Open “Show shared tabs.” This list identifies the tabs attached to the current conversation. Review the names and URLs, especially if several browser windows are open.
  3. Remove anything unnecessary. Use the remove or stop-sharing control for a tab that should not remain part of the chat. Removing a tab prevents it from being used as shared-tab context for subsequent questions in that conversation; it is not a statement about deletion or retention of data already sent.
  4. Check again before a sensitive prompt. A new tab can become active, and a later chat can have a different sharing state. Verify the indicator immediately before you submit the question.

Labels and button placement can change between Chrome releases. If a control is not where these instructions describe it, use the wording shown in your current Gemini in Chrome panel and Chrome settings.

How to stop automatic sharing of the current tab

Chrome provides a setting to change the default for new chats. On desktop, Google’s help path is:

  1. Open Chrome’s Settings.
  2. Go to AI innovations.
  3. Choose Gemini in Chrome.
  4. Turn off Share current tab by default.

With that option off, the active tab is no longer automatically included when a new chat starts. The setting changes the default, not every possible sharing action: you may still be able to select a tab manually when you want Gemini to use it. Keep checking the sharing indicator because Chrome’s interface and rollout can change.

What this setting does not do

  • It does not make Gemini in Chrome the same product as the Gemini web app.
  • It does not revoke data that was already sent in an earlier conversation.
  • It does not prove that a Workspace document will be limited to the visible portion if you later share that Workspace page.
  • It does not disable other Chrome AI features unless their own settings say so.

Gemini in Chrome is not the Gemini web app

Opening the Gemini website in a Chrome tab is a different experience from using Gemini in Chrome. Google’s product documentation distinguishes them: page-content sharing and Live mode are documented for Gemini in Chrome, while the web app does not provide those same features.

Experience Page context How tabs are selected Important qualification
Gemini in Chrome Current tab is shared by default when a new chat opens; shared-tab content, media and URL are sent to Google. You can remove the current tab and add selected recent tabs, up to 10. Workspace pages may involve direct account access to a whole document.
Gemini web app The same Chrome page-sharing and Live-mode behavior is not provided. It is not the Gemini in Chrome tab picker. Do not infer Gemini in Chrome permissions from a session on the web app.

The distinction matters when you are troubleshooting a privacy concern. If you are unsure which product is open, check the interface and its settings rather than assuming that every Gemini prompt has browser-tab access.

What Gemini in Chrome cannot be assumed to see

The documented design is scoped to the active tab and the tabs you share. Therefore, you should not describe Gemini in Chrome as continuously watching every tab, reading your entire browser history or seeing your whole desktop. Those broader capabilities are not established by the cited product disclosures.

At the same time, avoid overpromising. The available documentation does not provide a complete technical inventory of every page element or every browser state. It does not support categorical claims about extensions, incognito mode, hidden DOM content, password managers or another monitor. If a specific boundary matters, test only with non-sensitive material and consult the current Chrome and organization policies.

A useful mental model

  • Not shared: a tab that is open but not selected is outside the documented shared-tab set for that chat.
  • Shared: the selected tab’s full content, media and URL are sent to Google according to Chromium’s notice.
  • Workspace shared: Google may use account access to refer to more of the document than the visible tab contains.
  • Other screens: no unrestricted whole-screen access is documented by these materials.

Availability, devices and account limits

Gemini in Chrome requires a signed-in, eligible account and a supported location, and Google says availability varies. Desktop Chrome Help supplies the settings path above. Google’s product material also describes mobile experiences, but Android and iOS do not necessarily expose the same controls or sharing flow as desktop Chrome.

Feature names and eligibility can change during rollout. The current product FAQ says Auto Browse is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States; that is a location-, plan- and time-dependent statement, not a requirement for the basic tab-sharing explanation in this article. Confirm availability in the account and version you are using before relying on a feature.

A privacy checklist before you ask a question

  1. Confirm that you are using Gemini in Chrome, not merely the Gemini web app.
  2. Read the sharing indicator and open Show shared tabs.
  3. Remove tabs that are irrelevant or sensitive.
  4. For a Workspace page, assume the assistant may be able to refer to the full document through the account.
  5. Check whether your employer, school or client forbids sending the material to Google.
  6. For future chats, consider turning off Share current tab by default under Settings → AI innovations → Gemini in Chrome.
  7. Do not paste secrets into a prompt merely to test what the assistant can see.

The core privacy decision is simple: share only the tab—and, in the Workspace case, the account context—you are prepared to send to Google. Gemini in Chrome is designed around that explicit tab scope, not silent access to everything open on your computer.
