What Gemini in Chrome Can Access on a Webpage—and What It Cannot

Short answer: Gemini in Chrome shares the page in your current tab by default when you open it. You can add other open tabs—Google documents up to 10—or remove any shared tab. On supported computers, you can attach selected regions of a page. A shared Google Workspace page is a special case: Gemini may access the connected Workspace account to answer about content beyond the visible page, such as an entire Google Doc. Auto browse is a separate mode that can visit sites, click, fill forms and use information from connected services, and it may share information with destination websites.

Those distinctions matter. Ordinary chat is based on context you share; auto browse can take actions across the web. Location, microphone, account type, age, device, country, Chrome version and administrator policies can also change what is available.

What Gemini in Chrome sees in an ordinary chat

When Gemini in Chrome opens, Google Chrome Help states: “When you open Gemini in Chrome, the page content from your current tab is shared by default.” Gemini uses that page context to answer questions such as summarizing an article or extracting key points.

Default sharing does not mean every browser tab is sent automatically. The documented behavior is the current tab, plus tabs that you deliberately add. The interface identifies which tabs are shared, so you can check the context before asking a question.

Current tab

The current page is the starting context for a new chat unless you change the default-sharing control. If you navigate to another page while that tab remains shared, check the shared-tab indicator so you know which page Gemini is using. A tab opened from a Gemini chat or from a shared tab can also become part of the documented tab-sharing flow.

Additional tabs

You can add other open tabs to compare or consolidate information across pages. Google documents a maximum of 10 open tabs in this feature. Added tabs are shown in the interface and can be removed individually.

How to inspect and remove context

  1. Open Gemini in Chrome and look for the shared-tab indicator in the chat interface.
  2. Review the tab names before submitting your prompt.
  3. Remove any tab you do not want included, using the control beside that tab.
  4. To prevent automatic sharing when a new chat opens, change the setting that lets Gemini share the current tab by default. You can still add a tab deliberately when needed.

Removing a tab stops that tab’s page content from being shared through the tab-sharing control. It does not erase information that you separately pasted into a prompt or supplied through another connected feature.

Can Gemini read only what is visible on screen?

No. Shared-page context is not limited to the text currently visible in the viewport. Gemini can use the content of the shared page, while the documentation does not define that as unrestricted access to every pixel or every element on your display.

Selecting part of a page

On supported Chromebook Plus, Mac and Windows computers in supported countries, people aged 13 or older can choose Select from screen. You draw around a region of the webpage, and the selected content is attached to the prompt.

This is useful when a page contains several tables, charts or sections and you want Gemini to focus on one area. It is a way to submit chosen page content, not evidence that Gemini can inspect everything on your screen. Eligibility depends on the device platform, country and rollout, and the age rule for this feature is separate from other Gemini in Chrome entry points.

What changes for Google Workspace pages

A shared Workspace webpage can expose more than the page view. Google says Gemini may directly access the Workspace account so it can refer to content beyond what is available in the tab—for example, an entire Google Doc when you share a Doc page.

Treat this as a Workspace-specific exception, not as a rule for every website. Sharing an ordinary news page does not establish access to your other accounts, files or browser history. Workspace access can also depend on which connected apps are available for your account and administrator.

Practical implication

Before sharing a Workspace page, consider whether the answer could draw on the full document or other permitted Workspace content rather than only the paragraph currently displayed. If the document contains confidential material, check your organization’s account policy and connected-app settings first.

Auto browse is a different access model

Auto browse is not simply a larger version of tab summarization. It is a task mode that can navigate relevant websites and interact with them by clicking, filling forms and moving through multi-step flows.

Mode What Gemini can use Can it act on a site?
Ordinary chat Current tab by default; tabs you add, up to 10; selected page regions where supported No general website task automation is established
Shared Workspace page Shared page plus possible access to eligible Workspace account content, such as an entire Doc Access depends on connected Workspace features
Auto browse Relevant sites, information from connected apps and other details needed for the requested task Yes. It may click, fill forms and interact with pages

Review before it starts

When you request an auto-browse task, Gemini presents a plan for review. Read the sites and steps before starting. You can stop the task or take over the browser.

Confirmations for sensitive actions

Google’s instructions describe review or confirmation before actions such as sending communications, changing data, submitting forms, scheduling events, or visiting highly sensitive financial or health websites. Password Manager sign-in requires a separate permission step.

Information shared with destination sites

Auto browse can use personal information, including data from Connected Apps such as Google Workspace, to complete a task more accurately. Google’s help page cautions: “When completing an auto browse task on a website, Gemini may share your information with that site.” Only start a task when you understand which site will receive information and what action Gemini is proposing.

Google also warns that auto browse can misunderstand a request or a website. Review the result and any submitted data rather than assuming that a completed task is correct.

Where auto browse is unavailable

The user guide says auto browse is not available in Incognito, Live chats, or Gemini in Chrome on iPhone and iPad. Availability is rolling out, so a feature shown in documentation may not yet appear on your account.

Other information Gemini in Chrome may use

Public Google services

Google documents automatic use of public information from Google Search, Google Maps, YouTube and Google Travel, including flight and hotel searches. Search public information can be used even when Keep Activity is off. For public Maps and YouTube information, Keep Activity must be on.

This is a separate source from the webpage you share. A question about a restaurant, video or flight can therefore involve public service information in addition to the tab context.

Precise location versus estimated location

Chrome provides a precise-location control for Gemini in Chrome. If you turn it off, Google says: “If it’s off, Gemini in Chrome cannot access and use your precise location, and will only be able to derive an estimated location from your IP address.”

  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

Turning off precise location therefore does not make your location entirely unavailable. It blocks use of precise location through that permission while leaving an IP-based estimate possible.

Microphone

Microphone access is controlled separately. If you do not want voice input, review the microphone permission and the eligibility rules for your device and account. A microphone setting does not control tab sharing, location or auto browse.

What Gemini in Chrome does not have by default

  • Every open tab: The ordinary-chat documentation establishes the current tab by default and additional tabs you select, up to 10. It does not establish that all open tabs are automatically transmitted.
  • A removed tab’s content through that sharing control: Once you remove a shared tab, its page is no longer included through that tab-sharing setting. Content you manually pasted or supplied elsewhere is a separate matter.
  • Precise location after permission is disabled: Precise location cannot be used through that permission, although an estimated IP location may remain available.
  • Unrestricted screen or browser access: The documented contexts are shared tab content, selected regions on eligible devices, Workspace account access in the stated Workspace case, connected apps, public Google services and auto browse. The user-facing documentation does not establish access to every screen pixel, every website or every account in ordinary chat.
  • Universal access to an entire Google account from any page: The entire-Doc example is tied to a shared Workspace webpage and eligible account connections. It should not be generalized to unrelated sites or personal accounts.

Personal accounts and managed Workspace accounts are not the same

Google administrator documentation describes a managed Workspace service in which prompts, current-tab context and responses are used to generate a response with user consent and are not used to train generative AI models under the terms of that managed service.

That statement applies to the described administrator-managed Workspace environment. It is not a universal privacy promise for consumer accounts. Consumer retention, human review and processing depend on the applicable account terms. For those details, consult Google’s current Gemini Apps Privacy Hub and the terms for the account you are using.

Why the feature may be missing or behave differently

Gemini in Chrome availability varies by:

  • Age eligibility for the particular feature
  • Device and operating system
  • Country or region and supported language
  • Chrome version and staged rollout
  • Whether you are signed in
  • Incognito mode
  • Personal versus organization-managed account
  • Administrator settings

A screen-selection control, Workspace connection or auto-browse option can therefore be absent even when another user sees it. iPhone and iPad have additional auto-browse restrictions, and Incognito does not support auto browse according to the user guide.

A privacy checklist before you ask Gemini to use a page

  1. Check the shared-tab list. Confirm the current tab and any added tabs are appropriate. Remove unrelated or sensitive pages.
  2. Decide whether default sharing is necessary. Turn off the control that shares the current tab automatically if you prefer to attach pages only on purpose.
  3. Separate ordinary chat from auto browse. A request to summarize a page is different from a request that visits sites or submits information.
  4. Read the auto-browse plan. Check destination sites, proposed clicks, form entries and requested permissions before starting.
  5. Review connected apps and Workspace scope. A shared Workspace page may let Gemini refer to more than the visible document page.
  6. Check location and microphone permissions. Disable precise location or microphone access when you do not need them, while remembering that IP-derived location may still be estimated.
  7. Verify sensitive outcomes. Confirm messages, bookings, data changes and form submissions yourself, even when Gemini reports that the task finished.
  8. Use the account’s own privacy terms. Managed Workspace protections do not automatically apply to a personal Google account.

The safest mental model is contextual, not all-seeing: ordinary chat receives the tabs or page regions you share; Workspace can add account-scoped content in its documented case; public Google services can supply public information; and auto browse can travel to websites and act there under a review-and-permission flow.
