Gemini on a Pixel Watch is mainly a voice interface for watch actions and quick information. You can ask it to start, pause, resume or end a workout, check live heart rate or step count, set timers and alarms, open apps, change certain settings and perform simple music controls. The exact result depends on your watch generation, Wear OS and Gemini versions, paired-phone setup, Google Account, language, country and connection. Offline Gemini is the major exception: Google documents it only for Pixel Watch 5.
What Gemini supports on Pixel Watch
Google’s Pixel Watch documentation describes Gemini as an assistant for short, spoken requests rather than a full replacement for every phone feature. The documented watch tasks fall into four practical groups: controlling exercise sessions, reading basic live health metrics, handling simple device actions and answering ordinary requests when the watch has the required connection.

Hold the button above the crown
Press and hold the physical button above the crown. This is the direct hardware shortcut listed by Google and does not require you to find an app in the launcher first.

With the watch screen active, say “Hey Google,” then give the request. The hotword path depends on the assistant being configured correctly and on the watch recognizing the spoken command.

Tap the Gemini complication
If your watch face includes the Gemini complication, tap it to open the assistant. The complication is optional, so you may need to edit the watch face and add it before it appears.
Use the Gemini tile
Google’s help instructions also describe a Gemini tile. You can add recommended actions or create custom actions in the tile, giving you a swipe-and-tap alternative to speaking every request.
Raise to talk on Pixel Watch 4 and 5
Raise to talk is a separate feature, not a universal gesture on every Pixel Watch. On an eligible watch, lift it toward your mouth and wait for the visual readiness indicator before speaking. The requirements and failure conditions are detailed below.

Start, pause, resume or end an activity
Google gives the example “start my run.” Gemini can also pause, resume or end an activity by voice. This is useful when your hands are occupied or you are moving at a pace that makes tapping the display inconvenient.
The command controls the activity session; it does not establish that Gemini can design a training plan, evaluate technique or interpret symptoms. If the watch does not understand the activity name, use the exact workout label shown by the exercise app or start the session manually and use Gemini for pause and resume commands.

Ask for current heart rate
“What’s my heart rate?” is one of Google’s documented examples. The answer concerns the current heart-rate reading available through Google Health. A reading is not a diagnosis, and the documentation does not claim that Gemini can identify a medical condition, explain an abnormal result or replace professional medical advice.
Ask for step count
“What’s my step count?” requests the current count tracked by Google Health. Treat the response as a status check for the watch’s recorded data, not as a guarantee that every step has been detected or that the value is suitable for clinical use.
What Offline Gemini can do
Offline Gemini has the narrowest device support. Google says it is available only on Pixel Watch 5 and requires Google Gemini on Wear OS version 1.36 or later. For the offline scenario described in Google’s instructions, turn on Airplane Mode and make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are off.
Google’s examples of basic offline actions include:
- Setting a timer or alarm, such as “Set a timer for 15 minutes.”
- Toggling Water Lock or Wi-Fi.
- Opening apps such as Keep Notes or Maps.
- Turning on the flashlight.
- Starting a run.
- Skipping a song or changing volume.
These examples are a defined set of simple device tasks, not evidence that every online Gemini request works without a connection. Google cautions that results may vary and recommends checking responses for accuracy. If an offline request fails, disable Airplane Mode or restore the connection before assuming the watch or account is unsupported.

Raise to talk: requirements and situations where it will not trigger
Google limits Raise to talk to Pixel Watch 4 or Pixel Watch 5 running Wear OS 6 or newer, paired with a compatible Google Pixel phone that has Gemini enabled as its default assistant. The watch must be close to your mouth, and a visual indicator shows when it is ready to listen.
The gesture may not activate when:
- The watch is off your wrist or locked.
- Bedtime mode or Theatre mode is enabled.
- The microphone is occupied by another function.
- You are on a phone call.
- The watch has just responded to fall detection.
When the gesture fails, use the hardware button or the complication instead. Those launch methods avoid relying on the motion and readiness conditions that govern Raise to talk.
Compatibility: watch, software, account and connection
Watch and Wear OS version
Google’s general Wear OS guidance says Gemini is available on select watches running Wear OS 4.0 or later. That statement does not mean every Gemini feature is available on every Pixel Watch model. Offline Gemini has the stricter Pixel Watch 5 and Gemini-on-Wear-OS 1.36 requirement, while Raise to talk requires Pixel Watch 4 or 5 with Wear OS 6 or newer.
Paired phone and assistant selection
For Pixel Watch Gemini instructions, Google requires Gemini to be set as the digital assistant on the connected phone. Raise to talk additionally requires a compatible Google Pixel phone with Gemini selected as the default assistant. Update the watch apps before troubleshooting; an outdated companion or watch application can prevent the documented launch paths from appearing.
Google Account type
Pixel Watch Gemini instructions specify a personal Google Account. Work or school accounts are not included in that support statement, so switching accounts may be necessary if Gemini is missing even though the hardware and software meet the watch requirement.

Internet, LTE, country and language
Google generally expects an internet connection through the paired phone or an LTE provider. Google warns that some features may be unavailable on LTE and that device and feature availability varies by country and language. The watch must also be in a supported region and language. A command that works for one account or location can therefore be unavailable on another without indicating a hardware fault.

- Check the watch generation. Identify whether you have Pixel Watch 4 or 5 if you need Raise to talk, and Pixel Watch 5 if you need Offline Gemini.
- Check Wear OS. Install available watch updates. General Gemini support starts at Wear OS 4.0 on select watches; Raise to talk needs Wear OS 6 or newer; Offline Gemini needs Google Gemini on Wear OS 1.36 or later.
- Update watch apps. Google’s Pixel Watch guidance specifically directs users to keep the watch apps current.
- Confirm the account. Sign in with a personal Google Account rather than a work or school account for the Pixel Watch Gemini setup described by Google.
- Set the phone assistant. On the connected phone, choose Gemini as the digital assistant. For Raise to talk, confirm that the compatible Pixel phone uses Gemini as its default assistant.
- Verify region and language. Use a country and language supported by Google’s current Pixel Watch Gemini availability.
- Test an ordinary command. Try “Set a timer for 15 minutes” or ask “What’s my step count?” while the watch is connected.
- Test the launch method you plan to use. Try the button, active-screen “Hey Google,” the complication or the Gemini tile. If you have a qualifying Pixel Watch 4 or 5, test Raise to talk with the watch near your mouth.
- Test offline mode only on Pixel Watch 5. Enable Airplane Mode, turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as Google describes, then try a basic action such as a timer or flashlight. Reconnect if the request is outside the documented offline examples.
Pixel Watch feature comparison
Google’s support pages do not provide a complete model-by-model matrix for every Gemini capability. The table therefore lists only the combinations explicitly established by Google, rather than implying that an unlisted model has or lacks every feature.

What Gemini cannot reliably do on a Pixel Watch
It cannot make every Gemini feature work offline
Offline support is restricted to Pixel Watch 5 and a specific Gemini Wear OS version. Timers, alarms, settings, apps, flashlight, workout start and simple music controls are the examples Google provides; online conversational abilities should not be assumed in Airplane Mode.
It is not a medical advisor
The documented health use is retrieving current heart rate and step count. Google does not establish diagnosis, treatment recommendations, medical interpretation or emergency monitoring through these Gemini commands.
It does not bypass account, region or language restrictions
A supported watch alone is insufficient. The paired phone, personal-account requirement, assistant selection, supported country and language, software versions and available connection all affect eligibility.
It is not guaranteed to respond in every context
Raise to talk can be blocked by lock state, off-wrist detection, Bedtime or Theatre mode, microphone use, a phone call or recent fall detection. Other launch methods remain available, but they also depend on the watch being configured and updated.
Troubleshooting common failures
Gemini does not open
- Check that Gemini is selected as the digital assistant on the connected phone.
- Confirm the watch is in a supported region and language and uses a personal Google Account.
- Update the watch apps and Wear OS.
- Try the hardware button or complication instead of the hotword.
Raise to talk does nothing
- Verify Pixel Watch 4 or 5, Wear OS 6 or later and a compatible Pixel phone with Gemini as default.
- Move the watch close to your mouth and wait for the readiness indicator.
- Unlock the watch and disable Bedtime or Theatre mode.
- End any phone call or microphone-using function and wait if fall detection has just run.
An offline command fails
- Confirm the watch is Pixel Watch 5 and Gemini on Wear OS is version 1.36 or later.
- Use one of Google’s basic examples, such as a timer, flashlight, app launch or simple music control.
- For the documented test, enable Airplane Mode and turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- Reconnect to the phone or LTE if the request needs online services, then check the response rather than repeating an unsupported offline command.
Bottom line
Gemini makes a Pixel Watch useful for hands-free, short commands: controlling a workout, checking current heart rate or steps, setting timers and alarms, opening apps, changing simple settings and managing basic music playback. Pixel Watch 5 is the only model Google identifies for Offline Gemini, while Raise to talk is limited to Pixel Watch 4 and 5 with Wear OS 6 or newer and a qualifying Pixel phone. Treat the feature as a conditional assistant for watch tasks—not a universal offline chatbot or a medical service—and verify your account, software, language, region and connection before diagnosing a failure.
