Geely’s proposed investment gives NIO Power a strategic partner and an existing commercial-mobility battery-swapping business. The bet is that more compatible vehicles and fleet activity can make NIO’s fixed network of swap stations more useful. The announced agreements do not show that utilization has risen: they disclose no Geely-attributed swaps, station-level use rates or per-station margins.
What the Geely–NIO agreements provide
On September 27, 2026, NIO announced definitive agreements with Geely Holding subsidiaries. The proposed transaction is subject to regulatory clearances and customary closing conditions; the announcement does not establish that it has closed. Under its terms, a Geely subsidiary would contribute its entire equity interest in Yiyi Internet Technology (Chongqing) Co., Ltd. (Yiyi Power), which provides battery-swapping service for commercial mobility, along with RMB640 million in cash, to subscribe for newly issued equity in NIO Energy Investment (Hubei) Co., Ltd. (NIO Power). NIO’s announcement puts the post-money valuation at approximately RMB16 billion.
At closing, the proposed ownership is 30% for Geely’s subsidiary, 63.6% for NIO China and 6.4% for an existing investor. The Geely stake may be adjusted against operating milestones and could fall to no less than 20% for underperformance. A further RMB640 million investment option could raise the stake to 34%, absent post-closing adjustment. The announcement does not detail the milestone formula.
The deal also includes a reciprocal charging investment: NIO China has agreed to subscribe for 10% of Geely subsidiary Haohan Energy, which operates a charging business. NIO says the cash will be used to purchase certain charging assets from NIO. The charging arrangement is part of the broader partnership, but it is distinct from evidence about swap-station use.

Why utilization is the central question
A battery-swap station is a geographically fixed, capital-intensive asset with finite throughput. More swaps could spread the costs of a site, its equipment and its spare-battery inventory across more transactions; a busier network could also be more valuable to vehicle partners. That is the strategic logic implied by bringing Yiyi Power and Geely into NIO Power—not a utilization result reported by either company.
NIO’s 2023 annual report gives Station 4.0 a service capacity of up to 480 swaps per day. That is a stated ceiling, not average daily use. The report counted 2,350 swap stations and more than 35 million cumulative swaps as of December 31, 2023; a cumulative total does not show how use was distributed among stations. NIO’s 2023 annual report therefore provides operating context, not proof that individual sites are well utilized.

In June 2024, NIO described Station 4.0 as having 23 battery compartments and a 144-second swap time. It also reported 2,432 swap stations and 22,633 chargers in China as of June 13, 2024. Those are company-reported specifications and dated network counts, not current totals or evidence of station-level demand. NIO’s June 2024 announcement does not supply the missing utilization and margin figures.
Will Geely vehicles use NIO swap stations?
The companies have announced plans for Geely to develop consumer-facing battery-swappable models while NIO Power provides swapping services. NIO characterizes adoption and service plans as preliminary and subject to further discussion, so the plans should not be read as deployments already under way. The firms also say they will co-develop technology and standards and connect charging infrastructure. NIO’s account and Geely’s announcement describe intentions, not confirmed compatible vehicle volumes or swap activity.

The partnership builds on an earlier agreement dated November 29, 2023, which covered battery standards, swap technology, network expansion and operation, swappable-vehicle development and battery-asset management. That agreement called for standards for both private and commercial vehicles and compatible vehicles for the companies’ swap systems. The 2023 agreement makes compatibility a longstanding workstream, not an outcome that the 2026 investment itself proves.
Yiyi Power’s commercial-mobility business could add a more concentrated use case than dispersed private-car demand. But its contribution does not establish that every Yiyi vehicle can use NIO’s consumer network, or that any station will operate at high utilization. Vehicle and battery compatibility, station technology and operating arrangements have to align before a fleet can add meaningful traffic to a site.

What could make the utilization bet work—or fail
- Compatible vehicles and batteries: Vehicles need packs, station technology and operating arrangements that work together. The 2023 agreement’s separate private- and commercial-vehicle standards point to a compatibility task, not universal interchangeability.
- Fleet and consumer adoption: A commercial fleet with intensive, predictable routes may be a natural early use case for swapping, according to experts quoted by the Associated Press. That is an industry view, not a guarantee that Yiyi or Geely fleets will generate enough station visits. The Associated Press also reports that relatively few EV models globally are designed for swapping and describes automakers’ concerns about standardization and control of the battery supply chain.
- Shared standards and operations: Common technical standards alone would not show that vehicles are deployed, supported at the right sites or used frequently. The companies’ plans for cooperation have to become operating arrangements and compatible vehicle supply.
- Site-level economics: More network capacity is not automatically better economics. The relevant evidence would include actual swaps by station, battery and site costs, revenue per site and contribution margin; the announcements do not provide those Geely-specific measures.
How to compare swapping with charging
The available announcements do not provide enough comparable cost data to conclude that swapping is cheaper or more profitable overall. A practical comparison should examine the following factors rather than relying on network size or a station’s maximum capacity alone:
- Compatibility: Which vehicles and battery packs can use each network, and how much standardization is required?
- Time and duty cycle: How much time does replenishment take in the relevant use case, and how often must a vehicle return to service?
- Capital intensity: What do stations and spare-battery inventories require compared with charging equipment?
- Coverage and traffic: How geographically convenient is the network, and how many likely visits can each site attract?
- Battery ownership and financing: Who owns the battery assets, and how are they financed or subscribed to?
- Partner commitment and volume: Are compatible vehicles actually entering service in sufficient numbers to support recurring use?
What evidence would show the deal is working?
The most useful follow-up indicators would distinguish announced capacity and partnership plans from operating outcomes:

- Confirmation that the transaction has closed, including the final ownership stakes.
- Specific compatible Geely or Yiyi vehicle models, deployment dates and fleet volumes.
- Actual Geely- or Yiyi-attributed swaps, ideally by station and over a stated period.
- Changes in station-level utilization, alongside the number of sites and their operating capacity.
- Revenue and contribution-margin data that clarify whether added traffic improves station economics.
In the September 2026 announcements, NIO and Geely do not report a Geely-specific increase in station visits, daily swaps, capacity factor, revenue per site or contribution margin. Without those measures, the deal is best understood as a capacity-and-adoption wager whose result depends on compatibility, deployment and use.
