Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a typical home setup with standard 8-ohm speakers and a cable run of 50 feet or less, 16 AWG is a reasonable starting point. Consider 14 AWG for longer runs, lower-impedance speakers, or higher-current use, then confirm that the amplifier and speaker terminals accept the wire. The right choice depends on the full route and equipment—not gauge alone.
How speaker-wire gauge works
AWG means American Wire Gauge. The numbering runs in reverse: a lower number means a thicker conductor. Thicker wire has less electrical resistance, which becomes more relevant as the cable run gets longer or the speaker impedance is lower. Crutchfield identifies 16-, 14-, and 12-gauge among the common speaker-wire sizes, but no single gauge chart is a universal guarantee.

When comparing cables, use the one-way distance from amplifier to speaker, the speaker’s nominal impedance, the amplifier’s current demands, the cable’s verified conductor specifications, terminal capacity, and where the cable will be routed.
What gauge do you need for home theater?
Short runs to standard 8-ohm speakers
For a run of 50 feet or less to a standard 8-ohm home speaker, Crutchfield’s guidance calls 16 AWG a reasonable choice. This is a practical baseline, not a rule that overrides equipment documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- IN THE BOX: 16 gauge speaker wire cable (100 feet)
- CLEAR AUDIO: Plastic jacket helps ensure high-quality undistorted signals to and from audio equipment
- CONVENIENT: Connects audio speakers to an A/V receiver or amplifier
- SIMPLE INSTALL: Black line on one side of wire indicates the polarity for a proper audio system set up
- EASY DISPENSING: Comes wrapped around a hard plastic spool for simple dispensing
Longer runs or more demanding speakers
Consider 14 AWG when the speaker is more than 50 feet away, or when using lower-impedance speakers such as 6-ohm or 4-ohm models or a high-current amplifier. Check the amplifier and speaker manuals before choosing a cable, especially if their terminals have a stated maximum wire size.
A manufacturer-specific example
The 2019 Monoprice HT-35 manual gives more conservative maximum run lengths by gauge, with different limits for 4-ohm and 8-ohm installations. These are recommendations for that system, not a general-purpose chart.

The manual advises using the heaviest gauge the connectors can accept. This table differs from Crutchfield’s broader home-use guidance because the sources use different assumptions; do not combine their figures into one supposedly universal limit. Read the HT-35 manual.

In-wall installation
For in-wall runs, select cable specifically suitable for its location and check local installation requirements. A gauge label by itself does not establish that a cable is appropriate for concealed routing. Crutchfield uses 16/2 to mean two 16-gauge conductors and 14/4 to mean four 14-gauge conductors. Its guidance says 16 gauge can suffice for runs under 50 feet and suggests 14 gauge for longer runs.

- SOFTFLEX JACKET - Our wire is shielded with a soft and flexible jacket, which not only provides a great appearance, but also ensures maximum durability and easy installation.
Check the actual cable specification rather than generalizing from a product example. Belden’s 50977 catalog listing describes two stranded 2.5 mm² bare-copper conductors, a TPE jacket, and a maximum conductor DCR of 8.62 ohm/km. Those are specifications for that cable, not for speaker wire in general. See Belden’s 50977 listing.
Car audio
Car-audio runs and power demands differ from a typical home stereo. Crutchfield gives 14-gauge wire as an example for 100 watts to front speakers when the amplifier is in the trunk, and says longer runs and higher current call for larger wire sizes. The same retailer says factory speaker wire generally need not be replaced below 100 watts; treat that as retailer guidance and check the vehicle and component manufacturers’ requirements. See Crutchfield’s car-audio wire guidance.

70V/100V distributed audio
Do not use a home 4- or 8-ohm chart to size cable for a 70V or 100V distributed system. The applicable wire guidance changes with the system configuration. Monoprice’s commercial amplifier manual provides separate maximum-length tables for 4/8-ohm and 70V/100V installations; its limits apply to that model. Consult the commercial amplifier manual.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPlan and connect the speaker-wire run
- Measure the actual route. Follow the planned path from amplifier to speaker and leave enough slack to reach both terminals without pulling the cable taut.
- Check connection limits. Confirm the largest wire gauge the amplifier and speaker terminals accept. A thicker cable is not useful if it will not fit securely.
- Identify the conductors. Use the cable’s markings to keep the same conductor on the positive terminal at both ends and the other on negative. Follow the plus/minus labels on the equipment.
- Make a clean termination. Secure the conductors and check that no loose strand can touch the neighboring terminal. Compatible banana or pin plugs are optional; use them only if the terminals support them.
- Inspect before powering on. Recheck polarity and look for stray strands or accidental contact between terminals before turning on the system.
