Guilty Gear: Arc System Works’ signature series
Where Guilty Gear began
The original Guilty Gear launched in 1998. Created by Daisuke Ishiwatari, it established an original setting, an eclectic cast, and a fighting system built around unusually aggressive mechanics, including instant-kill attacks. Arc System Works identifies itself as both developer and publisher for the modern Nintendo Switch and PC release of the original game.
That history matters because Guilty Gear was not designed as a generic tournament fighter. Its world, characters, music, and mechanics were developed together, giving the series a strong identity that continued through later entries. A newcomer can therefore approach it in two ways: as a competitive fighting game with distinctive systems, or as a long-running fictional universe with its own terminology and story.
Guilty Gear -Strive- is the current flagship
Guilty Gear -Strive- is the latest main entry in the franchise. It released on June 11, 2021, and uses hybrid 2D/3D cel-shaded presentation rather than a purely flat 2D visual style. The result is a fighter that keeps side-on controls while presenting characters and camera movement with a 3D-rendered look.

Those modes make Strive suitable for more than one kind of player:
- New players: tutorial and mission content explain the controls and game systems.
- Solo players: training, arcade, and story modes provide ways to play without entering ranked matches.
- Competitive players: online ranked matches supply the game’s formal head-to-head progression.
- Series fans: the roster and story continue the larger Guilty Gear setting.
The official platform list covers Game Pass, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Because editions, regions, and subscription catalogs can change, verify the listing for your platform before buying or installing.
How active is Strive?
In a May 15, 2026 announcement about the limited-time Blazing Pass feature, Arc System Works said that Guilty Gear -Strive- had surpassed 3.5 million players globally. The figure includes packaged and downloaded copies, so it is a cumulative player count rather than a statement about simultaneous users, active monthly users, or current sales in a particular country.
That announcement is useful when judging whether Strive is still a live platform for online play: Arc System Works was continuing to add or promote features in 2026. It does not guarantee a particular matchmaking population at every hour or in every region.

BlazBlue: the other core Arc System Works fighting series
BlazBlue is the other series Arc System Works places at the center of its identity. The company’s own description calls it a series that, alongside Guilty Gear, has earned international recognition for innovative fighting systems and spectacular 2D and 3D artwork.
For a player deciding between the two, the most important distinction is continuity rather than a simple quality ranking. Guilty Gear follows one of the company’s oldest original worlds, beginning in 1998 and continuing through Strive. BlazBlue is a separate setting and cast with its own terminology, story, and mechanics. You do not need to finish one series before trying the other.
Arc System Works’ catalog is the safest place to confirm which BlazBlue edition is available on your console or PC. The franchise has appeared in multiple releases, and platform support is not identical across every entry.
Other fighting games Arc System Works makes or publishes
Under Night In-Birth
Under Night In-Birth is listed among Arc System Works’ fighting-game properties. It is a separate universe from both Guilty Gear and BlazBlue, so it is a logical choice if you want another competitive fighter without starting a long-established Arc System Works storyline.

DNF Duel
DNF Duel is another fighting title in the catalog. Its inclusion illustrates that Arc System Works works beyond its wholly original flagship franchises, bringing its fighting-game expertise to projects connected to other game properties.
HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT
HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT is a licensed fighting project based on the HUNTER×HUNTER property. Licensed games can appeal to fans of the source material who want a playable adaptation, while the original Arc System Works series are the better starting point if you want the company’s own settings and characters.
Code Shifter
Code Shifter sits in the action-fighter part of the catalog. It is useful as a bridge between Arc System Works’ character library and a more compact action format rather than a direct replacement for a mainline Guilty Gear or BlazBlue game.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
River City, Kunio-kun, and Double Dragon
River City and Kunio-kun
The River City and Kunio-kun families represent Arc System Works’ brawler and action heritage. These games generally center on moving through stages or areas, fighting groups of opponents, and building the kind of direct, moment-to-moment action associated with beat-’em-ups. The catalog also includes River City Saga titles, showing that the family extends beyond one fixed format.
Choose a River City or Kunio-kun entry when you want action that is easier to understand at a glance than a competitive fighter. You can concentrate on movement, attacks, enemy patterns, and progression without learning a large versus-game matchup chart.
Double Dragon
Double Dragon is another major brawler family in the catalog. Its presence connects Arc System Works with one of the best-known names in side-scrolling beat-’em-ups. As with River City, individual releases differ, so check the specific game’s platform, local or online multiplayer support, and edition details rather than assuming every entry has the same features.
Arc System Works games outside fighting and brawling
The official catalog makes clear that Arc System Works is not only a fighting-game company. Several entries occupy very different genres.
Bubble Bobble: Sugar Dungeons
Bubble Bobble: Sugar Dungeons is listed as an adventure and puzzle-oriented title. It is a natural option for players who prefer solving situations and navigating challenges over learning frame timing or chaining attacks against another player.
Library of Ruina
Library of Ruina demonstrates the company’s role in publishing or handling games with RPG and strategy elements. Its presence is important for readers who know Arc System Works only through tournament fighters: the catalog also includes slower, system-heavy experiences built around planning and progression.
Ground Divers!
Ground Divers! is another non-fighting entry listed by Arc System Works. Its inclusion, together with the catalog’s other recent releases, shows that the company’s output can be experimental rather than organized around one house genre.

Dear Me, I Was…, DONUTAL, DAMON, and BABY
The catalog also lists Dear Me, I Was…, DONUTAL, DAMON, and BABY. These newer names are evidence that the company continues to add original projects alongside established brands. Because their availability and platform information can change, use the current catalog entry for each game instead of relying on a franchise-level assumption.
Super Technos World
Super Technos World collects or represents another part of the company’s action-game heritage. It is especially relevant to players exploring Arc System Works’ historical connection to Technos-era properties rather than looking for a single new competitive game.

The best starting point depends on the type of play you want, not simply on which name is most famous.
| Your priority | Best starting area | What you get | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modern online competition | Guilty Gear -Strive- | Ranked matches, training, missions, arcade, story, and a roster of 32+ fighters | Platform, edition, and whether your preferred online service is included |
| Another anime-style fighter | BlazBlue or Under Night In-Birth | A different cast, setting, and system from Guilty Gear | Which specific entry is available on your system |
| Classic beat-’em-up action | River City, Kunio-kun, or Double Dragon | Direct combat against groups of enemies and a more immediately readable action loop | Single-player, local co-op, online co-op, and control options for that release |
| Licensed character appeal | HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT or another licensed project | A game built around an existing entertainment property | Whether you want the source material’s characters or an original Arc System Works universe |
| Puzzle or adventure play | Bubble Bobble: Sugar Dungeons | Problem-solving and progression rather than ranked combat | Exact platform and release edition |
| Strategy or RPG systems | Library of Ruina and other catalog entries in those genres | Planning, progression, and slower decision-making | Genre tags and platform filters on the current listing |
Where can you play Arc System Works games?
There is no single Arc System Works platform. The catalog spans console, PC, mobile, and subscription listings. Guilty Gear -Strive- is the clearest example of that reach: its official page lists Game Pass, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
For every other title, check four details on the individual product page:
- Platform generation: a game may be available on one PlayStation or Xbox generation but not another.
- Edition: deluxe, anniversary, complete, and standard editions can contain different downloadable content.
- Mode support: local multiplayer, online matchmaking, and solo content are not universal.
- Regional availability: release dates, storefront listings, and subscription access can differ by country.
Arc System Works’ catalog provides genre and platform filters, which makes it more reliable than assuming that a series’ newest entry represents every older release.
Buying Guilty Gear -Strive- for PlayStation 5
The official Guilty Gear -Strive- page links to a physical GG 25th Anniversary Edition for PS5. That makes “Guilty Gear -Strive- PS5” a reasonable search phrase when you are looking specifically for the PlayStation 5 product rather than a digital Xbox, PC, or older-console edition.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Before ordering, match the listing against your needs:
- Confirm that the product is the PS5 version, not the PS4 edition or a digital listing.
- Check whether the anniversary package contains the downloadable content or extras you want.
- Verify the seller, region, language information, and delivery status.
- Compare the physical package with the current digital storefront price and included content.
Retail stock, prices, and edition contents can change. The official product page is the appropriate place to confirm which edition Arc System Works is currently highlighting.
What Arc System Works’ catalog says about the company
Looking only at Guilty Gear and BlazBlue gives an incomplete picture. The company has a recognizable specialty—stylized, technically distinctive fighting games—but it also maintains a portfolio that reaches from classic brawlers to puzzle adventures and strategy-focused releases.
That combination explains why different players may know Arc System Works for entirely different reasons. A competitive player may encounter the company through Strive, a retro fan through Double Dragon or River City, and a player browsing unusual RPG or strategy releases through titles such as Library of Ruina. Licensed projects add another route in for fans of established characters.
For the most current information, use the individual game’s official listing for release date, platform, edition, downloadable content, and availability. Those details are more volatile than the franchise relationships themselves.
The short answer
Arc System Works makes and publishes much more than one type of game. Guilty Gear is its signature franchise, with Guilty Gear -Strive- serving as the current flagship. BlazBlue is the other core fighting series, while Under Night In-Birth, DNF Duel, Code Shifter, and HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT broaden the fighting-game lineup. River City, Kunio-kun, and Double Dragon cover brawling and action, and games such as Bubble Bobble: Sugar Dungeons, Library of Ruina, Ground Divers!, and newer catalog entries cover puzzle, adventure, RPG, strategy, and other formats.
