PlayStation gameplay data is broader than a match result. Sony Interactive Entertainment says it may collect in-game actions and progress, online activity, the players you meet, trophies, scores, device and peripheral details, software-use patterns, errors and load times. When automatic error reporting is enabled, a crash report may also include screenshots or video captured before the failure. Offline play does not necessarily prevent collection: Sony says some game-use information can remain on the console and be sent when it reconnects.
To reduce collection, select Limited Data rather than Full Data on PS5, review each game’s own data notice and settings, consider disabling automatic system-error reporting, restrict what other players can see separately, and unlink authorized apps you no longer use. The exact choices depend on your country, console software and the game.

What “gameplay data” includes
Sony’s privacy policy describes several related data streams. They are policy categories, not a statement that every title collects every field in every session.

Actions, progress and interaction
For games developed or published by Sony Interactive Entertainment or another SIE company, Sony gives examples such as which obstacle you jump over and which levels you reach. A PlayStation studio’s game-specific explanation adds interface use, areas visited, weapons used, characters interacted with and errors encountered. Those examples show why “gameplay data” can describe the way you play, not merely whether you won.

Online activity and other players
When a game uses online services, Sony says it may log activity on game servers, including account and device identifiers, online-game use and which players you play against. Match participation, social interactions and the people encountered can therefore sit alongside your progress data.
Scores, trophies and rankings
The policy lists trophies, scores and rankings as information associated with PlayStation use. These records can be visible to other users according to your profile and activity settings, while also serving platform functions such as tracking achievements.
Console, network and peripheral context
The categories Sony lists include console and other device identifiers, network identifiers such as IP and MAC addresses, current or recent location, connected peripherals, configuration and information about installed software use. This context helps distinguish a game session and support platform services; it is separate from the in-game events themselves.
Diagnostics and crash material
Sony also lists software errors and load times. If Report System Software Errors Automatically is enabled, detailed crash information may include screenshots and video captured before the crash. The policy establishes that this material can be part of a detailed report; it does not mean every crash always contains both forms of media.
Information supplied by linked services
An authorized third-party app can receive some account data. PlayStation’s support guidance specifically gives online status and gameplay information as examples. Sony’s privacy guidance also describes linked-service sharing such as an Apple Music connection receiving media-library, ratings or listening-activity information. Treat an app connection as a separate sharing path from the console’s own telemetry.
How collection works when you play offline
Disconnecting the console is not a guaranteed opt-out. Sony says offline game-use information may be stored on the device and collected the next time the console connects. In practical terms, a game can record eligible events locally during an offline session, then transmit them after reconnection if the applicable policy and settings permit it.
This does not establish that every offline title records the same fields or that all locally stored data is eventually uploaded. The policy describes a capability and category of collection, so the game’s notice remains the best source for title-specific behavior.

Sony’s current US privacy guidance describes two principal PS5 choices:
| Setting | What Sony says it permits | Who should consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Limited Data | Data Sony says is necessary to provide its services. | Players who want to minimize platform-level collection while retaining required PlayStation functions. |
| Full Data | Additional collection for purposes such as improving the experience. | Players who are comfortable sharing more usage information for those purposes. |
Choose Limited Data in the PS5 privacy or data-collection controls if minimizing Sony’s platform-level collection is your priority. Limited Data is not “no data”: Sony still describes necessary service data as collected. Menu wording and availability can vary by region and system version, so follow the labels shown on your console.

Game-specific controls can override the assumption that one switch controls everything
Sony says collection choices may depend on region and may be available on a per-game or device-specific basis for games released after March 2018. A title can therefore present a consent notice or a Game Data menu in addition to the PS5 platform setting.
What to check when launching a game
- Read the first-run privacy or data-collection notice instead of accepting it automatically.
- Open the game’s Settings, Options or Privacy/Data section and look for telemetry, analytics, diagnostics or game-data controls.
- Record which choices are enabled and whether they cover collection, local storage, online services or personalized features; those are different functions.
- Revisit the menu after an update. A patch can add a control or change its label without changing the console-wide setting.
Santa Monica Studio’s official data-collection support article illustrates a title-level approach: “The Game Data settings allow you to control if Game data is collected or stored from your device.” That statement applies to that studio’s documented game settings, not universally to every PlayStation title. If a game offers no switch, its notice and the regional privacy policy explain the available choices.

Six practical ways to limit collection and sharing
1. Select Limited Data on PS5
Use the PS5 privacy/data controls to change the platform choice from Full Data to Limited Data. This is the clearest platform-wide reduction Sony documents. It does not disable data that Sony says is necessary to deliver PlayStation services, and it does not replace a game’s own consent or telemetry controls.
2. Review each game’s notice and settings
Apply the title-level steps above, especially for games released after March 2018 that may expose per-game choices. If the game distinguishes “collect” from “store,” turn off both when your goal is to minimize retention on the console. Do not assume a setting in one studio’s game exists in another’s.
3. Consider disabling automatic system-error reporting
Inspect the PS5 system setting named Report System Software Errors Automatically. Turn it off if you do not want detailed crash reports sent automatically with the possibility of screenshots or video captured before a crash. Sony’s policy does not say that switching this off stops every diagnostic signal, game telemetry stream or server log; it addresses the automatic detailed system-error report.
4. Reduce what other players can see
PS5 provides four privacy presets, ranging from Social and Open to Solo and Focused, plus individual controls. PlayStation’s privacy tools cover profile and activity visibility, communications and whether games appear in your visible activity list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse the individual controls when you want a narrow change, such as hiding a particular game or limiting who can contact you. These settings govern disclosure to other users. Hiding a game from your profile does not tell Sony to stop collecting gameplay data, and it does not revoke a game’s own telemetry permission.
5. Unlink authorized apps
Remove services that no longer need access. PlayStation documents these routes:
- PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps.
- PS4: Settings > Account Management > Authorized Apps.
- PlayStation App: Settings > Authorized Apps.
- Web: Use Account Management online and open the authorized-app controls.
Unlinking stops the connection going forward; it does not necessarily erase information the service already received. Check the app’s own privacy controls if you also want previously shared data deleted.

6. Use regional data-access and deletion rights
PlayStation’s privacy guidance says people can access and delete personal information Sony holds, but the available rights and process depend on the country. Open the privacy policy for your region and use its account data-access request tools. Do not assume that a request guarantees immediate deletion of records Sony must retain for legal, security or service reasons.
What each control does—and does not do
| Control | Primarily changes | Does not automatically change |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Limited Data | Platform-level collection beyond data Sony says is necessary for services. | Required service data, every game’s telemetry, or data already shared with an app. |
| Game Data or telemetry switch | The title’s documented collection or on-device storage, where the game provides such a control. | Console diagnostics, another game’s settings or server records governed by a separate notice. |
| Report System Software Errors Automatically | Automatic detailed system-error reporting, which may include pre-crash screenshots or video. | All diagnostic collection or ordinary gameplay and online-service logs. |
| Privacy presets and activity visibility | What other PlayStation users can see and how they can interact with you. | Sony’s internal collection or a game’s data processing. |
| Authorized-app unlinking | Future sharing through that connected service. | Data the app already received or collection by the console and game. |
Why region, game and software version matter
Privacy controls are not identical worldwide. Sony says available collection choices can depend on region, and the wording shown on a US console may differ elsewhere. A game released in one market may offer a data switch that is absent in another, while an update can move or rename a menu.
Before changing a setting, confirm the console model (PS5 or PS4), system-software version, account country and game release. When a menu is missing, read the game’s current privacy notice and the regional Sony policy rather than relying on a screenshot from another country or an older version.
Common situations and the right response
“I only play single-player games.”
Single-player use can still produce on-device game-use data, technical diagnostics and device context. Offline play may defer transmission until reconnection. Check the game’s notice and choose Limited Data where available.
“I hid the game from my profile. Is collection disabled?”
No. Hiding controls what other players see. It does not opt you out of Sony’s platform collection or the title’s own telemetry.
“I turned off crash reporting, so no screenshots can leave the console.”
That setting addresses the automatic detailed system-error report described by Sony. It does not prove that every other diagnostic or game-data pathway is disabled.
“A connected app knows when I am playing.”
Review Authorized Apps and unlink services you no longer trust or use. A linked app may receive online status and gameplay information; removing the link is the direct control for that sharing path.
“The Limited Data option is not visible.”
Check the account’s region, console model and current system software. The documented PS5 choice is not evidence that every region, device or game exposes identical labels. Use the privacy policy and in-game notice for the applicable market.
A privacy-minimizing setup checklist
- Set PS5 platform collection to Limited Data, if that choice is offered for your account.
- Read the data notice for every newly installed game.
- Disable title-level telemetry or game-data storage when the game provides that option and you do not need the related feature.
- Decide separately whether to disable Report System Software Errors Automatically.
- Choose a privacy preset and adjust profile, activity, communication and game-visibility controls for your intended audience.
- Audit Authorized Apps on the console, PlayStation App and Account Management; unlink anything obsolete.
- Keep a note of the account country and game version when a control appears different from instructions written for another market.
- Use your region’s data-access or deletion process when you need a copy of, or action on, information Sony holds.
What Sony’s policy does not establish
The policy categories do not reveal the exact fields transmitted by every game, the frequency of each upload, or whether every listed identifier is present in every session. They also do not establish that a single PS5 switch controls a third-party publisher’s servers. For those details, the game’s own notice, publisher documentation and the applicable regional policy take precedence.
