Grand Theft Auto VI is best described as running on an updated version of Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE). Rockstar has not published a numbered build such as “RAGE 9,” nor has it released a complete engine specification. The careful answer is therefore an updated RAGE technology family, not a formally named version.
That conclusion follows RAGE’s documented use across Rockstar’s major open-world games and current technical reporting that identifies GTA VI as an updated RAGE title. Rockstar’s own material confirms the platforms and that its showcase footage was captured in-game, but it does not disclose a renderer, frame-rate target, resolution mode or ray-tracing configuration.

What “RAGE” means in GTA VI
RAGE is short for Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, a proprietary technology family developed for Rockstar’s games. Unlike a general-purpose engine licensed to many unrelated studios, RAGE is built around Rockstar’s requirements for large, streaming open worlds, cinematic presentation, character systems and console hardware.

Those releases are not evidence that every subsystem stayed unchanged. They show an engine lineage that Rockstar has repeatedly extended rather than abandoned between flagship projects.
#1 Best Overall
| Game | What the documented history establishes |
|---|---|
| Rockstar Games Presents: Table Tennis | Identified as the first game use of RAGE in the documented lineage. |
| Grand Theft Auto IV | Uses the RAGE technology family for Rockstar’s open-world framework. |
| Red Dead Redemption | Continues that proprietary engine lineage in a different setting and game style. |
| Grand Theft Auto V | Uses a later, substantially developed generation of the same technology family. |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Represents another major evolution of RAGE before GTA VI. |
For players, “updated RAGE” should be read as an engine family and architecture that has evolved over several console generations. It does not imply that GTA VI uses the exact binaries, tools or rendering code shipped in any earlier game.
What Rockstar has officially confirmed about GTA VI
Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page identifies Leonida and Vice City as the setting and lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms. Take-Two’s announcement on December 4, 2023, made the same platform commitment. Those statements are the firmest public facts about the release target.
Rockstar’s Newswire described its extended presentation this way: “Captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, this extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI showcases the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.” The wording confirms that the material was captured from the game running on PlayStation 5. It does not identify the engine build or guarantee that every shot represents the final shipping settings.

In the same announcement, Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games, said: “Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences.” That is a statement of creative ambition, not a technical specification.
Details the official pages do not provide
- No numbered RAGE version is named.
- No renderer or graphics API is specified.
- No target frame rate is announced.
- No resolution modes or ray-tracing settings are listed.
- No polygon count, engine-size figure or performance benchmark is published.
- No statement says that the engine was completely rebuilt from zero.
Consequently, a precise claim such as “GTA VI uses RAGE 9 at 4K and 60 frames per second” goes beyond what Rockstar has documented.
Why updated RAGE is the most defensible answer
There are two separate lines of support. First, Rockstar has maintained a proprietary engine lineage through its major console releases. Second, a current technical reference on GTA VI describes the game as running on an updated version of RAGE, drawing its observations from Rockstar-published trailers and screenshots. That reference is useful corroboration, but it is outside reporting rather than a Rockstar engineering document.

- Platform- Sony Playstation 1
The combination makes “updated RAGE” stronger than alternatives such as “a brand-new unnamed engine” or “Unreal Engine 5.” Rockstar’s public GTA VI material never identifies a third-party engine. Its established development pattern points to continued internal technology, while the available technical reporting supplies the direct GTA VI description.
What “updated” can involve
An engine update can replace or redesign individual systems without changing the engine’s family name. A studio might revise world streaming, animation, lighting, physics, audio tools, asset pipelines, memory management and platform abstractions while retaining shared technology and development workflows. From the outside, a heavily modified branch can look like a new engine, but only the developer can define where a version boundary lies.
That distinction matters for GTA VI. The game targets newer console hardware than the original releases in the RAGE lineage, and it presents a larger and more detailed version of the series’ open-world formula. Those facts make substantial engineering work reasonable to expect, but they do not establish a formal rewrite or a public version number.
Is GTA VI using “RAGE 9”?
There is no official confirmation of a RAGE 9 designation. Rockstar’s game pages and Newswire material reviewed for GTA VI do not use that label. It may be an informal shorthand used by fans or commentators to describe a newer internal generation, but it should not be presented as Rockstar’s confirmed product name.
Former Rockstar audio designer Rob Carr said he would be amazed if Rockstar had not rebuilt most of RAGE because technology architecture had advanced considerably since GTA V. Carr’s background makes the observation informed, yet he was not presented as a current GTA VI engineer. His comment can explain why a major modernization is plausible; it cannot prove a complete rewrite, a specific version number or the implementation of any particular feature.
Rebuild, rewrite and evolution are not interchangeable
- Evolution: existing systems are extended and replaced over time while the engine lineage remains recognizable.
- Major rebuild: many core systems are redesigned, but the studio may still call the result RAGE.
- Complete rewrite: most foundational code is replaced and the studio could choose a new name, although it might retain the RAGE branding.
Only Rockstar can say which description applies internally. Until it publishes that explanation, “updated RAGE” is precise enough to be useful without pretending to know the company’s private versioning.

Does GTA VI use Unreal Engine 5?
Nothing in Rockstar’s official GTA VI announcements identifies Unreal Engine 5. The documented continuity of RAGE and the available GTA VI technical reference point in the opposite direction: an updated proprietary Rockstar engine. That is not the same as a formal statement that Unreal technology is absent from every tool or middleware package, but there is no evidence that Unreal Engine 5 is the game’s primary engine.
| Comparison point | RAGE in Rockstar’s open-world games | Unreal Engine 5 in general |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership and licensing | Rockstar’s proprietary technology family, developed for its own productions. | A general-purpose engine licensed and used by many studios. |
| Documented Rockstar history | Traced through Table Tennis, Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2. | Not identified by Rockstar as GTA VI’s engine. |
| GTA VI confirmation | Current technical reporting describes an updated RAGE version. | No official GTA VI announcement names it. |
| Public documentation for this title | Rockstar confirms in-game PlayStation 5 footage and platforms, but not a numbered build or detailed specification. | No GTA VI-specific technical documentation is supplied by Rockstar. |
This comparison does not establish that one engine is universally better. Engine quality depends on a studio’s tools, staff, content pipeline, target hardware and ability to tune the technology for a particular game.
Is GTA VI built on the Red Dead Redemption 2 engine?
Red Dead Redemption 2 is part of the RAGE lineage, so it is reasonable to expect GTA VI engineers to have reused knowledge, tools or selected technology from that project. It is not accurate to say that GTA VI simply runs on the unchanged Red Dead Redemption 2 engine. GTA VI is a new production targeting current-generation consoles, and Rockstar has not published a component-by-component relationship between the two games.

The official showcase being captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5 gives the footage technical relevance. It demonstrates the visual result Rockstar was willing to show from the target hardware. Viewers can reasonably discuss visible world density, lighting, character detail, animation and the apparent scale of the environments.
Visual footage cannot, by itself, establish a final resolution, frame rate, ray-tracing mode, graphics preset or memory budget. A captured sequence may use development settings, a particular performance mode or a fixed cinematic camera. Compression and video encoding also change what viewers perceive. Treat visual analysis as evidence of presentation goals, not as a substitute for a published specification.
Will GTA VI run at 60 frames per second?
Rockstar has not announced a frame-rate target for GTA VI. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platform listing confirms the hardware families, not whether the game will offer 30-fps, 60-fps or multiple modes. It also does not establish the resolution or ray-tracing trade-offs attached to any mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUntil Rockstar publishes performance details or the final game ships with documented settings, any exact frame-rate claim is speculation. Console model names alone cannot determine the result because engine workload, visual settings and the developer’s priorities all affect performance.
How to evaluate future engine claims
As more information appears, classify statements by their evidence rather than by how confidently they are repeated.
- Confirmed: Rockstar or Take-Two explicitly names the engine, version or setting in an official document.
- Well-supported: multiple credible technical references agree, while clearly identifying their information as reporting or analysis rather than a vendor specification.
- Inferred: a conclusion drawn from RAGE’s documented history, visible footage or similarities to earlier games.
- Unresolved: claims about a numbered build, total rewrite, exact graphics modes, resolution, frame rate or internal subsystem that Rockstar has not documented.
This framework prevents a fan label such as “RAGE 9” from becoming a false official fact and keeps observations about trailers separate from specifications that require developer confirmation.
What the engine choice means for players
Using an in-house engine gives Rockstar control over the technology stack and lets its teams tune systems for the company’s own open-world design. The long RAGE lineage also means experience from earlier games can inform tools and production practices. Those are organizational and technical advantages, not guarantees of a particular visual feature or performance level.

For buyers, the practical facts currently established are simpler: GTA VI is officially listed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar has shown footage captured on PlayStation 5. Choose the console edition that matches your hardware; do not choose based on an unverified RAGE version or an assumed 60-fps mode.
The bottom line on GTA VI’s engine
Call GTA VI an updated RAGE game. That wording matches Rockstar’s documented engine history and the clearest current technical description without inventing a version number. “RAGE 9,” “a total rebuild” and guaranteed resolution, ray-tracing or frame-rate specifications remain unconfirmed. Rockstar’s official pages establish the platforms, setting and in-game nature of its footage; they do not publish the deeper engine specification many readers are looking for.
