Check the marking on your watch and its exact manual: the guidance for unmarked, 5BAR, 10BAR and 20BAR watches differs. A 20-bar rating is commonly expressed as approximately 200 meters, but it does not mean you can take any such watch to that depth.
What do G-SHOCK water-resistance ratings mean?
Casio says “water resistant” is more accurate than “waterproof”: watches are rated for resistance to different pressures. The marking tells you about the watch’s tested pressure rating; the model manual explains which activities Casio lists for that watch. Start with the case marking and manual rather than assuming all G-SHOCK watches have the same protection.

Casio’s module 5719 manual distinguishes watches with no BAR marking from 5BAR, 10BAR and 20BAR models. Its activity table is guidance for watches covered by that manual, not a universal rule for every G-SHOCK.

| Marking | Guidance in Casio module 5719 | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| No BAR mark | Hand washing and rain are listed; water-related work, swimming, windsurfing and skin diving are not. | Applies to watches covered by module 5719. Check your own model’s manual. |
| 5BAR | Water-related work and swimming are listed; windsurfing and skin diving are not. | Check your own model’s manual before water use. |
| 10BAR or 20BAR | Swimming, windsurfing and skin diving are listed. | The manual says covered watches are not for scuba diving that requires air tanks. |
Is 20-bar water resistance the same as 200-meter water resistance?
Casio says 20-bar water resistance is commonly associated with 200-meter resistance: “20 bar” describes pressure, while “200m” is an approximate water-depth equivalent. The number is not a promise that the watch is suitable for use at 200 meters underwater. Pressure ratings do not, by themselves, establish a safe usable depth for a wearer or certify a watch for scuba diving.

Casio describes standard G-SHOCK 20-bar models as suitable for active water use such as swimming, surfing and jet skiing. For scuba diving, it says a professional diving watch must be designed and tested specifically for diving; Casio identifies FROGMAN as having ISO-standard 200m diving water resistance. Even then, confirm the exact model’s current documentation and limits.
Can you swim with a G-SHOCK watch?
It depends on the watch’s marking and manual. In the module 5719 table, swimming is listed for 5BAR, 10BAR and 20BAR watches, but not for an unmarked watch. Casio’s G-SHOCK guidance also describes 20-bar models as appropriate for swimming and other active water use. Do not infer permission for swimming from the brand name alone; verify the instructions for your exact model.

Are G-SHOCK watches waterproof?
No watch should be treated as permanently waterproof. Casio uses the term “water resistant” because protection is rated for particular pressures and can be affected by use, heat, residue or the condition of seals. A rating is not a lifetime guarantee, and a general G-SHOCK rating is not the same as an explicit diving designation.

How to use a G-SHOCK safely around water
- Check the exact marking and manual. Match the watch’s case marking to its own instructions and the activity you plan to do; do not rely on a different G-SHOCK’s rating.
- Keep buttons and the crown untouched when wet or submerged. Casio warns that operating them in those conditions can compromise water resistance.
- Avoid heat, humidity and cleaning products. The module 5719 manual warns against baths, heated swimming pools, saunas and other high-temperature or high-humidity settings, as well as soaps and detergents. These conditions can reduce resistance or cause the glass to fog.
- Rinse away residue. After exposure to seawater, chlorine, dirt or other residue, rinse with fresh water and dry with a soft cloth, as Casio recommends.
- Do not treat a pressure rating as scuba approval. Use a watch for scuba only when its specific documentation supports that activity and any applicable diving designation.
How often should a G-SHOCK’s water resistance be checked?
Water resistance depends on seals that can age or deteriorate, so servicing matters. For the diver’s watch covered by Casio module 3521, Casio recommends replacing the gasket once every two years and inspecting water resistance whenever the battery is replaced. That interval is specific to the watch covered by that manual; it should not be applied automatically to every G-SHOCK. Follow your model’s manual and service advice, particularly before relying on the watch for water activities.
