What Fuel Does a Fusion Reactor Use? Deuterium, Tritium, and Alternatives Explained

Most fusion-reactor designs use a 50:50 mixture of deuterium and tritium (D-T), two heavy isotopes of hydrogen. D-T is the leading fuel because it fuses at lower temperatures and at a higher reaction rate than other practical candidates. Deuterium is plentiful and stable; tritium is radioactive, scarce, and must eventually be bred inside the reactor from lithium. That tritium supply—and the machinery needed to recover, purify, store, and reinject it—is the central fuel challenge for commercial fusion.

The short answer: deuterium and tritium

A fusion reactor does not burn a chemical fuel. It heats hydrogen isotopes until their nuclei can overcome electrical repulsion and fuse. For the leading design, one deuterium nucleus fuses with one tritium nucleus. The reaction produces a helium-4 nucleus and an energetic neutron. The helium remains in the hot plasma long enough to help sustain it, while the neutron escapes the magnetic field and deposits its energy in the surrounding blanket and structures.

Deuterium is hydrogen with one proton and one neutron. Tritium is hydrogen with one proton and two neutrons. Both are forms of hydrogen, but their availability is very different:

  • Deuterium: stable, non-radioactive, and naturally present in water. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that about one in every 6,500 hydrogen atoms in seawater is deuterium.
  • Tritium: radioactive, with a half-life of about 12 years; the International Atomic Energy Agency gives 12.3 years. Tritium is not naturally available in the quantities a power plant would need.

A D-T reactor therefore needs two capabilities at once: an initial inventory of tritium and a breeding system that makes replacement tritium during operation.

Why D-T is the leading fusion fuel

It reaches useful reaction rates at the least demanding conditions

All fusion plasmas must be extremely hot and sufficiently dense for long enough that nuclei collide and fuse. Candidate fuels do not perform equally at the same temperature. Among practical light-element combinations, D-T has the highest reaction rate at the lowest useful temperature. That makes it the most realistic starting point for a power-producing device, even though the reaction creates a difficult neutron and tritium-management problem.

Other fuels can reduce particular drawbacks—especially tritium handling or neutron production—but they require hotter and denser plasmas. Higher temperature increases the demands on plasma heating, confinement, materials, control systems, and the reactor’s ability to remove impurities. A fuel that looks cleaner on paper can therefore be harder to ignite and sustain in an actual machine.

Deuterium is an abundant feedstock

Deuterium can be separated from ordinary water. Because seawater contains a large total amount of hydrogen, the deuterium fraction identified by the Department of Energy is enough to make deuterium a plentiful resource for fusion fuel. It is stable, so it does not decay while being transported or stored. Deuterium availability is not expected to be the resource bottleneck for D-T power.

Tritium is the limiting isotope

Tritium is scarce because it is radioactive and decays continuously. A reactor cannot simply order an unlimited supply of it. Existing tritium inventories are limited, and a commercial plant must recycle nearly all of the isotope that does not fuse and produce more from lithium in its breeding blanket. This is why discussions of “fusion fuel” quickly become discussions of tritium accounting, containment, and breeding performance.

A small mass contains a large amount of fusion energy

The Department of Energy says that 1 gram of D-T fuel has fusion energy comparable to about 2,400 gallons of oil. That comparison describes the energy available from the nuclear reaction, not the electricity delivered to the grid: a real plant loses energy in the plasma, blanket, heat-conversion system, exhaust equipment, and other components.

ITER’s fuelling explanation estimates that a 1,000-megawatt-equivalent fusion plant would require about 250 kilograms of D-T fuel per year. This is an estimate for the plant scale and fuelling concept described by ITER, not a demonstrated commercial operating result. The amount that must be processed through the plant is larger than the amount that actually fuses, because unburned isotopes are recovered and recirculated.

How the D-T reaction produces power

What happens to the nuclei

In a D-T reaction, the deuterium and tritium nuclei combine briefly in a high-temperature plasma. The fused products are helium-4 and a neutron. The helium nucleus is charged, so magnetic fields can keep it in the plasma. As it slows, it transfers energy to the surrounding plasma and helps maintain the temperature needed for further reactions.

The neutron has no electric charge. It passes through the magnetic-confinement field and enters the first wall, blanket, shielding, and other reactor structures. Its kinetic energy becomes heat. A power-conversion system would carry that heat to a working fluid and then to a turbine or another generator system.

Why the neutron changes the reactor design

The neutron is both the reason D-T can produce useful heat outside the plasma and a major engineering burden. Neutrons damage and activate materials, impose shielding requirements, and determine how the blanket is designed. They also provide the nuclear input needed to breed tritium from lithium-6.

Consequently, a D-T reactor is not just a plasma vessel. It is a coupled system consisting of a confinement chamber, a neutron-facing first wall, a breeding or non-breeding blanket, heat-removal circuits, shielding, tritium-processing equipment, and monitoring systems. Fuel performance cannot be separated from these surrounding systems.

How a reactor makes its own tritium

Lithium-6 is the breeding material

Fusion neutrons can react with lithium-6 in a blanket to create replacement tritium. The blanket must capture enough of the escaping neutrons, provide lithium in the right form and location, and allow the newly made tritium to be extracted before it diffuses into unwanted materials or leaves the controlled fuel system.

Breeding is not the same as having an unlimited fuel supply. A plant must compensate for tritium that fuses, decays during its 12-year-scale half-life, remains trapped in components, is lost during processing, or is held in reserve for maintenance and start-up. The blanket therefore has to produce a surplus after all of those losses, with enough margin to support the next operating cycle.

The bred isotope must still be processed

Freshly bred tritium is mixed with other hydrogen isotopes and chemical forms. It must be recovered from the blanket, purified, measured, stored, and delivered back to the plasma as a controlled mixture. Breeding does not remove the need for an industrial tritium plant; it creates the feedstock for that plant.

ITER’s description of the tritium fuel cycle identifies six linked fuelling functions:

  1. Tokamak exhaust processing: remove deuterium, tritium, helium ash, and impurities from exhaust streams.
  2. Isotope separation: separate hydrogen isotopes and return the required composition to the fuel system.
  3. Storage and delivery: hold fuel in controlled forms and inject measured quantities into the plasma.
  4. Atmospheric detritiation: remove tritium from air in areas where it could otherwise spread.
  5. Water detritiation: recover tritium that exchanges into water or moisture.
  6. Analytics: measure isotope concentrations, inventories, losses, and contamination throughout the cycle.

These functions operate continuously or repeatedly. A reactor therefore consumes and recovers hydrogen isotopes in a loop rather than emptying a tank of fuel once.

Why tritium containment is a central safety task

Tritium can exchange with hydrogen-containing compounds and water. The EPRI/Department of Energy fuel-cycle assessment identifies this exchange as a reason that containment and recovery must be designed into every part of the plant. A leak is not limited to a visible gas line: tritium can move through moisture, surfaces, ventilation systems, process water, and waste streams.

Designers consequently need multiple barriers, continuous inventory measurements, controlled ventilation, atmospheric detritiation, water detritiation, and procedures for recovering tritium from maintenance areas. The objective is to keep the isotope inside the defined fuel cycle and to prevent routine operations from spreading it through the plant or environment.

Radioactivity also affects logistics. Tritium inventories must be tracked as they move between storage, processing, injection, exhaust treatment, and waste management. The isotope’s 12-to-12.3-year half-life means that stored quantities decline over time, while newly bred quantities must be integrated into the same accounting system.

Fuel Plasma conditions and reaction rate Availability Neutron and radioactivity profile Breeding or supply burden Fuel-cycle complexity
Deuterium–tritium (D-T) Highest practical reaction rate at the lowest useful temperature among the leading candidates. Deuterium is plentiful in water; tritium is scarce. Produces helium and an energetic neutron; tritium itself is radioactive. Requires an initial tritium inventory and lithium-based breeding for long-term operation. Requires isotope separation, tritium recovery, storage, delivery, detritiation, and detailed inventory control.
Deuterium–deuterium (D-D) Requires hotter and generally more demanding plasma conditions than D-T. Uses the abundant deuterium isotope for both reactants. Research discussions identify neutron-producing branches; the reviewed official sources provide less deployment guidance than for D-T. Does not depend on a tritium starting inventory in the same way, but still creates difficult neutron and materials issues. Still requires isotope handling, exhaust processing, and neutron-resistant reactor systems.
Deuterium–helium-3 (D–³He) Requires hotter, denser plasmas than D-T. Requires a dependable helium-3 supply in addition to deuterium; supply and engineering pathways remain constraints. Can reduce highly energetic neutron production compared with D-T, but does not make all neutron-related engineering disappear. Can reduce the need for tritium breeding, while shifting the burden to helium-3 sourcing and more extreme plasma performance. Would need a fuel cycle for helium-3 and deuterium plus systems for managing reaction products and residual neutrons.
Proton–boron-11 (p–¹¹B) Requires substantially hotter and denser plasma conditions than D-T. Uses hydrogen and boron-11 feedstocks, but practical reactor fuel systems are not demonstrated. Attractive because it can reduce tritium requirements and highly energetic neutron production; secondary neutron and materials questions still have to be addressed. Avoids D-T tritium breeding, but demands much more challenging plasma performance and fuel control. Would require a different exhaust, impurity, heat-management, and fuel-injection system from a D-T plant.

The table describes the trade-offs identified by the Department of Energy, ITER, and the IAEA. D-T leads on the physics of ignition and reaction rate; the alternatives potentially improve fuel-supply or neutron characteristics at the cost of more severe plasma and engineering requirements.

Deuterium: the plentiful half of D-T fuel

Where it comes from

Deuterium occurs naturally in water. Industrial systems can extract and concentrate it from ordinary water supplies, after which it can be purified for the reactor’s isotope-handling equipment. Because deuterium is stable, the material can be stored without the decay losses that affect tritium.

Why abundance does not remove the need for processing

A reactor needs an accurately controlled deuterium-to-tritium mixture, not untreated water. Deuterium must be separated from protium—the common hydrogen isotope—and kept within the fuel-cycle inventory. Exhaust streams also contain mixtures of deuterium, tritium, helium, and impurities, so the deuterium that leaves the plasma must be recovered before it can be reused.

Tritium: the scarce half of D-T fuel

Natural scarcity and decay

The Department of Energy summarizes the supply problem plainly: “Tritium is not common.” Its radioactive half-life is about 12 years, or 12.3 years in the IAEA’s 2023 account. Any stockpile loses roughly half of its tritium over that timescale, so a future reactor fleet cannot rely indefinitely on one-time inventories.

What a plant must do with tritium

Tritium must be measured and controlled from receipt or breeding through injection, exhaust recovery, temporary storage, maintenance, and waste treatment. It can be present as an isotope in hydrogen gas, incorporated into water, or associated with materials that absorb hydrogen. The fuel plant must be able to find those forms and return usable tritium to the reactor.

This is why “the reactor makes its own fuel” is an incomplete description. Breeding supplies new tritium atoms, but the plant still needs separation, purification, storage, delivery, detritiation, and analytics. A failure in any one of those functions can reduce the plasma’s available fuel even if the blanket’s theoretical breeding rate is adequate.

What fuelling a D-T reactor looks like in practice

A simplified operating sequence is:

  1. Prepare the isotope mix. Deuterium and tritium are purified and combined in the proportions required by the plasma-control system.
  2. Inject measured fuel. The plant delivers a controlled amount of the mixture to the vacuum vessel rather than opening a continuous bulk flow.
  3. Confine and heat the plasma. Magnetic fields and heating systems bring the fuel to fusion conditions.
  4. Capture reaction heat. Neutrons transfer energy to the blanket and structures, while charged helium remains in the plasma long enough to contribute heating.
  5. Process the exhaust. Unfused deuterium and tritium, helium ash, and impurities are removed from the exhaust stream.
  6. Separate and store isotopes. Hydrogen isotopes are separated, measured, and placed in controlled storage or sent back for injection.
  7. Recover bred tritium. Lithium-bearing blanket systems extract newly produced tritium and send it through purification and storage.
  8. Monitor losses and detritiate. Air, water, equipment, and maintenance areas are checked and treated so tritium remains within the managed inventory.

Only a fraction of the fuel entering the plasma fuses during any one pass. Recycling is therefore essential to both economics and tritium availability.

What current fusion experiments demonstrate—and what they do not

ITER is testing the technologies needed for a D-T fuel cycle, including exhaust processing, isotope separation, storage and delivery, detritiation, and analytical systems. Those demonstrations are important because a power plant will need all of them to operate together.

Testing fuel-cycle components is not the same as demonstrating a commercially self-sufficient reactor. Large-scale tritium production, reliable lithium breeding, recovery from a working blanket, and continuous plant-wide recycling still require further engineering and operational validation. A future commercial design must show that it can breed more tritium than it loses while maintaining safe inventories and acceptable component lifetimes.

Could a reactor use a fuel other than D-T?

Yes. Deuterium–deuterium, deuterium–helium-3, and proton–boron-11 are proposed alternatives. Their appeal is clear: they can reduce dependence on tritium breeding and may reduce highly energetic neutron production. Their disadvantage is equally clear: they need hotter and denser plasmas, which makes ignition, confinement, heat removal, materials, and control more difficult.

That trade-off explains why alternatives remain research options while D-T is the reference fuel for the leading experimental path. A different fuel would not simply require replacing one gas bottle with another; it would change the plasma operating point, heating system, confinement requirements, blanket role, exhaust treatment, and overall plant design.

The Bottom Line

D-T is the practical front-runner because it fuses more readily than other candidate fuels. Deuterium supplies the abundant, stable half of the mixture; tritium supplies the scarce, radioactive half. A viable power plant must breed tritium from lithium, recover nearly all unused isotopes, contain exchanges with air and water, and prove that this complete fuel cycle can sustain long-term operation.
