Fossil bite marks are direct evidence that teeth contacted bone. When their shape, position and geological context fit a feeding explanation, they can show which parts of a carcass were attacked, whether bone was gnawed or punctured, and how much feeding pressure an assemblage experienced. They usually cannot identify the biter automatically, and they do not by themselves prove that the animal was killed during the encounter rather than scavenged after death.
The most reliable reading separates the trace—what is physically preserved—from the behavioral interpretation scientists build from it. That distinction is essential because several carnivores can make similar marks, carcasses can be visited repeatedly, and preservation and collecting practices can change which traces researchers see.

What can fossil bite marks tell us about dinosaur behavior?
A tooth mark records a feeding interaction that would otherwise be invisible in a skeleton. A bone may preserve punctures, grooves, striations, drag marks or areas where tooth edges scraped across its surface. The marks’ location on a bone or skeleton adds another layer of evidence: a concentration on a particular element can indicate which portion of a carcass was accessible or repeatedly targeted.

A single groove could have several explanations, while repeated, similarly oriented traces in a plausible feeding location provide a stronger case for tooth contact. Researchers also examine whether damage is healed or unhealed and whether the bone was altered around the time of death or long afterward. These observations can support interpretations such as feeding, carcass scavenging, prey selection or intense competition over a carcass, but they rarely preserve an entire feeding scene.

Fossilized feeding traces can also reveal interactions involving animals other than dinosaurs. A 2020 study from the Junggar Basin reported mammalian feeding traces on dinosaur bone and presented them as the oldest direct evidence of mammalian feeding behavior in the fossil record. The traces were interpreted as gnawing on soft tissue that remained attached to carcasses, showing that a dinosaur bone with tooth damage does not automatically record a dinosaur bite.
How scientists move from a mark to a behavioral interpretation
Paleontologists first describe the physical evidence and only then propose what happened. The same mark can support different explanations if its context is unknown, so conclusions are normally expressed with varying degrees of confidence.
| Observed feature | What it may indicate | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Punctures or pits | A tooth pressed into bone, potentially during biting or gnawing | Shape can overlap among different tooth types and non-feeding damage; one pit rarely identifies a species |
| Linear grooves or striations | A tooth edge dragged or scraped across the surface | Direction and repeated pattern strengthen the case, but the trace maker may remain uncertain |
| Drag marks and clustered scratches | Movement of a tooth or jaw across bone during feeding | Must be assessed with bone position, surface preservation and other traces |
| Tooth wear associated with traces | Repeated contact with bone and clues about how a feeder used its teeth | Wear can be difficult to assign when several carnivores were present |
| Healed damage | An injury that occurred while the animal was alive and survived long enough to repair it | Its absence does not prove the animal was killed by a biter |
| Unhealed or perimortem damage | Damage inflicted around the time of death, potentially during an attack or early carcass access | It still does not, by itself, establish which animal caused death |
| Marks concentrated on particular bones | Access to preferred carcass regions or repeated targeting of available tissue | Burial, weathering and collection can remove or overrepresent certain bones |
This approach keeps an observation from being overstated. “A striated trace crosses the bone” is an observation. “A large theropod scavenged the carcass” is an interpretation that requires the trace, its location, associated damage and the wider fossil context to agree.

Can scientists tell which dinosaur made a bite mark?
Sometimes they can narrow the possibilities, but a precise identification is often impossible. Several carnivores may have lived in the same ecosystem, and tooth marks can converge in appearance. The most diagnostic traces may also represent only a small fraction of all modifications on a quarry’s bones.

Researchers compare the mark’s dimensions and geometry with known teeth, consider the animal’s body size and feeding mechanics, and ask whether the proposed biter was present in the same deposit. Even then, attribution is usually probabilistic rather than certain.
The Morrison Formation sauropod survey
A 2023 PeerJ survey cataloged 68 Morrison Formation sauropod bones with documented theropod bite traces. The study supports theropod feeding on juvenile sauropods and argues that the overall pattern is consistent with scavenging of large sauropod carcasses. Individual traces, however, can be difficult to assign when multiple credible biters were present. The total of 68 is a count of bones documented in that survey, not a prevalence estimate for all Morrison sauropods.
The juvenile Centrosaurus frill
A 2018 PLOS ONE study described feeding traces on a juvenile Centrosaurus frill. A small-bodied theropod was considered the strongest candidate, but the trace-maker identity remained uncertain. The case illustrates how a distinctive location—in this instance, the frill—can make a feeding interpretation useful even when species-level attribution is not secure.

A defensible report should therefore distinguish three claims: that a tooth contacted the bone, that the contact occurred during feeding, and that a named animal made it. Evidence may be strong for the first claim, moderate for the second and weak for the third.

Do bite marks prove a dinosaur was hunted?
No. A bite trace proves contact with bone, not the circumstances that led to that contact. A predator could have attacked live prey, but a scavenger could have arrived after the animal died. A carcass could also have been visited by multiple feeders over days or weeks.
The Morrison Formation survey is a clear example. Its catalog of sauropod traces found no evidence of perimortem bites or healed wounds in the material discussed and interpreted the pattern as consistent with scavenging of large carcasses. That conclusion supports feeding, but it does not identify a killing event.
Conversely, damage inflicted around death may indicate an encounter close to the time of death without proving that the biter caused it. Healing is evidence that an animal survived an injury, yet an absence of healing can reflect rapid death, later carcass access or limited preservation. Predation and scavenging are therefore separate hypotheses that must be tested against the whole skeleton, the sediment and the trace pattern.
What major studies show about dinosaur feeding traces
Mygatt-Moore Quarry: unusually frequent marks
A 2020 PLOS ONE analysis reported that 28.927% of observed bones in the Mygatt-Moore Quarry assemblage had at least one bite mark. This percentage applies to that sampled assemblage, not to dinosaurs in general. It is unusually high compared with other dinosaur-dominated assemblages examined by the authors.

The quarry’s frequency was discussed in relation to feeding and scavenging, including a possible interpretation that Allosaurus engaged in cannibalism. Cannibalism is a study interpretation, not an established universal behavior of Allosaurus or theropods. The authors also stressed that assigning traces to particular actors is difficult and that sampling and collection protocols can bias the observed frequency.
Morrison Formation: sauropod carcass use
The 2023 survey’s 68 documented sauropod bones with theropod traces provide a record of repeated theropod access to sauropod remains. The distribution supports feeding on juvenile sauropods and likely scavenging of large carcasses. Associated theropod tooth wear contributes information about bone contact and feeding mechanics, while the presence of multiple plausible carnivores limits confidence in assigning every mark to one genus.
Junggar Basin: mammal feeding on dinosaur remains
The 2020 Junggar Basin study is important because it broadens the set of possible trace makers. Mammalian gnawing on soft tissue still attached to dinosaur carcasses was interpreted as the oldest direct fossil evidence of mammalian feeding behavior. A mark on dinosaur bone therefore records an interaction with a dinosaur carcass, not necessarily a dinosaur-on-dinosaur attack.

The juvenile frill example shows why anatomical position matters. Feeding traces on a conspicuous defensive structure may indicate access to a particular carcass region, but the strongest candidate for the maker remained a small-bodied theropod rather than a definitive identification. The case supports cautious behavioral inference without pretending that every trace has a known author.

How paleontologists distinguish bite traces from other damage
There is no single visual test that identifies every bite mark. Scientists combine several observations:
- Document the mark’s shape. Record whether it is a pit, groove, striation, drag trace or a combination, along with dimensions and orientation.
- Check its position. Note the exact bone, surface and anatomical region. A trace on a normally exposed carcass area has a different context from one deep inside a protected joint.
- Assess patterning. Repeated marks with consistent spacing or direction are more informative than an isolated scratch.
- Inspect the bone response. Look for healing, fresh-looking fracture surfaces, crushing and other evidence of when the damage occurred relative to death and burial.
- Compare plausible makers. Test the trace against teeth and feeding mechanics of animals known from the same ecosystem, while allowing for non-dinosaur feeders such as mammals.
- Evaluate the deposit. Sediment, weathering, transport and burial can create or modify grooves and can determine which surfaces remain visible.
These steps narrow explanations; they do not guarantee a species-level answer. The research on individual examples supports a feeding interpretation when multiple lines of evidence converge, while acknowledging uncertainty where they do not.
What quarry-wide frequencies can—and cannot—show
A frequency such as 28.927% can help researchers compare feeding pressure among assemblages and investigate ecosystem interactions. It is meaningful only with the sampling frame attached: which bones were observed, how they were collected, and whether damaged or visually striking specimens were more likely to be retained.
Collection can bias the pattern in opposite directions. A survey that favors complete, attractive bones may undercount heavily modified specimens. A project focused on damaged material may overcount traces relative to the original death assemblage. Preservation, weathering and which skeletal elements survive also affect the denominator.
For the same reason, the Morrison total of 68 bones should not be converted into a percentage without knowing the full population sampled. Counts document known examples; they do not automatically estimate how common the behavior was across all sauropods or all Morrison localities.
A practical framework for reading a fossil-bite claim
When evaluating a paper, museum label or news report, ask these questions in order:
- What is physically preserved? Identify the mark type, dimensions, pattern, bone and surface.
- Is tooth contact the best explanation? Consider weathering, trampling, transport and other damage before accepting a bite interpretation.
- What behavior is actually supported? Feeding contact is a narrower claim than predation, and scavenging is different from a killing event.
- How secure is the trace-maker assignment? Look for comparisons with teeth and for discussion of other animals present in the deposit.
- How representative is the sample? Check whether the study reports a systematic survey or a selected collection of notable bones.
- What remains uncertain? A strong study states whether its conclusion concerns contact, feeding, carcass use, prey choice or a named species—and where the evidence stops.
Common misreadings to avoid
- “A bite mark identifies the dinosaur.” Similar teeth can make similar traces, and multiple carnivores may be plausible.
- “A bite proves predation.” Feeding on a carcass can leave the same kind of evidence without a recorded kill.
- “One quarry percentage is a dinosaur-wide rate.” Frequencies belong to their sampled assemblages and methods.
- “No healed wound means the biter killed the animal.” Healing, death timing and preservation are separate questions.
- “Damage on dinosaur bone must come from another dinosaur.” Mammalian feeding traces demonstrate otherwise.
- “A trace preserves the whole event.” It usually records one interaction or stage of carcass use, not every participant or the exact sequence.
Used carefully, fossil bite marks provide one of the few direct windows into dinosaur feeding. They can reveal contact with bone, carcass access, possible prey selection and the intensity of interactions at a site. Their greatest value comes from combining trace form and anatomical location with taphonomic context, while keeping the distinction between evidence and inference visible at every step.
