What Formal Proof Assistants Are and How They Check Mathematical Proofs

A formal proof assistant is software that lets you state a mathematical claim in a precise formal language, construct a proof for that statement, and have a trusted checking mechanism verify the result. It does not read ordinary mathematical prose and automatically decide whether every argument is correct. The human must formalize the claim, choose definitions and assumptions, and make sure the formal version expresses the intended theorem.

In Lean, a proposition is represented as a type and a proof is a term with that type. Tactics help construct the term; Lean’s kernel checks the finished term. Acceptance therefore means that the derivation follows from the formal system, imported declarations and selected axioms—not that the software has independently confirmed the author’s informal interpretation.

What a formal proof assistant actually is

A proof assistant, also called an interactive theorem prover, is a programming environment for writing mathematical definitions, propositions and proofs in a formal language. The system stores those declarations and applies precise inference rules to determine whether a proposed proof is valid.

This is different from a spell-checker for mathematical prose. A conventional proof may leave definitions implicit, rely on a familiar convention or omit routine steps. A proof assistant requires those choices to be represented in its formal language. The result is a machine-checkable object whose validity can be tested repeatedly by the system.

The central division of labour is important:

  • The human decides what theorem to formalize, chooses definitions, supplies assumptions and guides the proof.
  • The assistant checks that the resulting formal proof obeys the rules of its logic and that all referenced declarations are available and well formed.

Some assistants can search for routine proof steps, but their automation operates inside this formal framework. They are not general-purpose mathematicians that discover and validate every theorem without guidance.

How checking works in a propositions-as-types system

Lean illustrates the propositions-as-types approach. In this setting, a proposition is treated as a type, and a proof of that proposition is a term inhabiting the type. If the proposition is written as p, a term t is a proof when the type checker can establish that t has type p.

This correspondence gives the checker a concrete object to inspect. A tactic script is not itself the final mathematical authority. Tactics construct, transform or search for a term; the kernel then checks the term against the proposition.

Step 1: State the claim formally

The author first writes a proposition using the assistant’s language. Definitions that would normally be explained in surrounding prose—such as what counts as a number, function or equality—must be available as formal declarations. The statement must be precise enough that the checker can assign it a meaning.

That precision does not remove the need for mathematical judgment. A statement can be perfectly well formed yet fail to express the informal claim the author had in mind. An accidental extra assumption, an overly narrow definition or a quantifier in the wrong position can change the theorem while leaving the syntax valid.

Step 2: Construct a proof term

The author supplies a term that should have the proposition as its type. Writing such terms directly can be cumbersome, so assistants provide tactics and proof languages. A tactic can introduce hypotheses, split a goal into cases, apply a known theorem or invoke a decision procedure. Each successful tactic changes the proof state or fills part of it, with the aim of producing a complete term.

For a tiny example, Lean’s official proof text uses the proposition that one plus one equals two:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
example : 1 + 1 = 2 := by
  rfl

example : 1 + 1 = 2 := by
  decide

These examples show that a small proposition can have more than one proof route. They should not be mistaken for a measure of the work required to formalize substantial mathematics, where definitions, lemmas and dependencies can be extensive.

Step 3: Let the kernel check the result

When the script succeeds, the assistant has a completed proof term. The kernel checks that the term is well formed and that its type is the theorem statement. If either condition fails, the theorem is rejected. A tactic can contain a bug without making an invalid proof acceptable, provided the kernel checks the term independently.

The Lean Language Reference states: “Each tactic produces a term in the core type theory that is checked by the kernel, so bugs in tactics do not threaten the soundness of Lean as a whole.” The sentence describes the role of the kernel, not a promise that every formal statement is an adequate translation of an informal one.

Step 4: Interpret acceptance within the trust boundary

Kernel acceptance establishes a conditional result: the proof follows from the formal declarations, imported results and axioms that the system is using. It does not establish that:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the formal statement captures the author’s intended informal theorem;
  • an imported theorem was formalized with the right hypotheses;
  • a definition models the intended mathematical object;
  • an added axiom is appropriate for the application; or
  • an external computation or data source used to create the declarations was itself correct.

Those are modeling and foundation questions for mathematicians to review. Mechanical checking makes the formal derivation auditable; it does not replace interpretation.

Does a proof assistant prove the theorem automatically?

Usually, no. The user normally supplies the statement, relevant definitions and enough proof guidance for the assistant to construct a term. Tactics can automate repetitive reasoning and discharge routine subgoals, but their search is constrained by the formal environment and the procedures implemented by the system.

For a simple decidable proposition, a tactic such as decide may close the goal. For a larger theorem, the author may combine many lemmas and tactics, inspect intermediate goals and revise definitions. Even when a tactic appears to solve a goal in one line, the kernel still checks the resulting term.

This distinction explains why a short script is not necessarily a short proof in the mathematical sense. A compact command may call substantial libraries or automation. Conversely, a long script may be needed to expose every definition and intermediate argument that informal mathematics leaves implicit.

What the checker does—and what it does not do

Checks performed by the formal system

  • It verifies that declarations and proof terms are syntactically and type-theoretically well formed.
  • It checks that a proof term has the exact proposition declared as the theorem’s type.
  • It checks references to definitions, lemmas and imported declarations under the available environment.
  • It rejects a proof when a required obligation remains unsolved or a term has the wrong type.

Questions left to the author and reviewers

  • Does the formal proposition say what the informal theorem was supposed to say?
  • Are the definitions faithful to the mathematical objects under discussion?
  • Are hypotheses missing, unnecessarily strong or inconsistent with the intended use?
  • Should the development rely on the listed axioms, and are those axioms documented?
  • Have imported results been reviewed for their statements and dependencies?

A checked theorem is therefore best read as “this formal proposition has a derivation in this formal environment,” not as an unconditional certification of every interpretation surrounding it.

Why imported theorems and axioms matter

Large formal developments are built in layers. A new theorem may depend on definitions in one module and lemmas imported from several others. The kernel checks the current proof term against those declarations, but it does not redo the human work of deciding whether every earlier statement was modeled correctly.

Axioms make this boundary especially visible. An axiom is accepted as a starting assumption rather than proved inside the development. A theorem that uses it can still be mechanically checked, yet its ultimate justification includes that assumption. Readers should inspect the environment and dependency list when the distinction matters.

The same caution applies to notation. A familiar symbol such as equality, addition or implication has a precise formal meaning determined by the system’s definitions and type rules. Two statements that look similar in informal notation can have different formal types and therefore different proof obligations.

How a typical formalization workflow unfolds

  1. Clarify the informal theorem. Write down the objects, quantifiers, hypotheses and conclusion without relying on unstated conventions.
  2. Choose or define the formal objects. Select the relevant number systems, structures, functions and relations, or define them when the library does not already provide the intended versions.
  3. Enter the proposition. Check that the statement elaborates and that its variables and assumptions have the intended scope and types.
  4. Plan dependencies. Identify previously proved lemmas and decide which imported modules and, if any, axioms the development will use.
  5. Break the goal into obligations. Use tactics to introduce assumptions, apply lemmas, split cases or reduce computations.
  6. Inspect failures rather than bypassing them. A type error or unsolved goal often indicates a missing hypothesis, a mismatched definition or an incorrect tactic choice.
  7. Run the kernel check. The completed term must type-check in the final environment, not merely appear plausible in the script.
  8. Review the model. Compare the formal statement and dependencies with the original mathematical intention before treating the result as the desired theorem.

How Lean, Isabelle/HOL and Rocq/Coq differ

Proof assistants share the goal of mechanically checking formal derivations, but their foundations and checking architectures are not identical. The following comparison stays limited to distinctions documented for these systems; it is not a ranking of features or performance.

System Logical foundation What is checked Documented checking model
Lean Dependent type theory An explicit proof term whose type is the proposition Tactics produce terms in the core type theory; a small trusted kernel checks them.
Isabelle/HOL Higher-order logic Derivations represented through the system’s inference framework Its implementation documentation describes an LCF approach in which an inference kernel records implicit proof terms; a checker reconstructs full terms and replays primitive inferences.
Rocq/Coq Type-theoretic foundations A completed proof term against the theorem statement The version 8.16.1 manual describes a kernel that checks the term is well typed and that its type matches the theorem statement.

These descriptions are system-specific. They do not imply that every assistant stores or validates proofs in exactly the same way. When comparing tools, ask which logic they implement, what proof object or derivation they record, which component is trusted to validate it and what kind of mathematical work their libraries and interfaces support.

How to read a checked theorem responsibly

When you encounter a formal theorem, use a short audit checklist:

  • Read the exact statement. Check every quantifier, type, equality and hypothesis.
  • Inspect definitions. Confirm that names and notation refer to the objects you expect.
  • Trace imports. Determine which earlier theorems and libraries are part of the environment.
  • List axioms. Separate proved results from assumptions introduced as axioms.
  • Distinguish script from term. A tactic script is a construction method; the kernel-checked term is the object that receives formal acceptance.
  • Compare with the informal goal. Ask whether the formal theorem is equivalent to, stronger than or weaker than the statement people intended to discuss.

This process prevents a common misunderstanding: treating a successful compilation as evidence that the software understood an informal proof. The software checked the formal artifact supplied to it.

Why formal checking is valuable despite these limits

Formalization forces hidden assumptions and definitions into the open. Once encoded, they can be checked consistently, reused by later proofs and examined by other readers without relying solely on an author’s informal judgment. A kernel can also catch many local errors—such as a term with the wrong type or a missing proof obligation—that are easy to overlook in handwritten work.

The value is therefore not that a computer replaces mathematical insight. It is that insight can be recorded in a precise language and subjected to a repeatable mechanical check. The resulting confidence is always relative to the formal statement, logical foundations, imported declarations and axioms that make up the development.
