Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a data-center room containing lithium-ion UPS batteries, an automatic sprinkler system is the most defensible baseline to investigate first. A clean-agent or other gaseous system may be added for equipment protection or accepted as an alternative when the adopted code, the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), and project-specific test evidence support it. Gas alone should not be assumed to stop cell thermal runaway, continued gas generation, or re-ignition.
The correct specification depends on battery chemistry, stored energy, cabinet and rack arrangement, room construction, ventilation, applicable code edition, and evidence for the exact installation. Treat the room as an energy-storage hazard integrated with the data center—not simply as another IT space.

Start with the adopted code and room classification
No single suppression agent is suitable for every battery room. The enforceable answer comes from the code adopted in the project jurisdiction, any local amendments, the room’s classification, and AHJ approval. Before selecting equipment, ask the AHJ which editions and sections govern the installation.

NFPA 855: stationary energy-storage installations
NFPA identifies NFPA 855 as its Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems and listed the 2026 edition as current at the time of the cited material. Its scope is deliberately technology- and installation-specific: requirements vary with battery technology, setting, system size, separation, and installed controls. The standard addresses fire detection and suppression alongside explosion control, exhaust ventilation, gas detection, and thermal-runaway hazards. A suppression choice made without those associated controls is incomplete.

NFPA 75: information-technology equipment areas
NFPA listed the 2024 edition of NFPA 75, the Standard for the Fire Protection of Information Technology Equipment, as current in the reviewed material. NFPA 75 addresses protection of IT equipment and areas from fire and from related smoke, corrosive products, heat, and water effects. It may apply to the data-center environment, but it does not by itself answer every question about an energy-storage room. Determine how the battery installation is classified and which provisions apply together.
International Fire Code pathway
The 2024 International Fire Code (IFC) section for electrochemical energy-storage systems references NFPA 855. The IFC also contains indoor lithium-ion and lithium-metal battery-storage provisions that allow automatic sprinklers or an approved alternative suppression system. For those covered storage areas, the design basis must be documented in an approved technical opinion and report addressing fire and explosion risks. The documentation can rely on relevant full-scale testing or another method accepted by the approving authority.
That indoor-storage provision should not automatically be treated as the rule for every UPS room. Confirm the use classification, quantity and arrangement of batteries, and the exact sections adopted by the jurisdiction.

How the principal suppression options compare
| Option | What it contributes | Important limitations | When it can be considered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic water sprinklers | Provides sustained cooling and can control fire spread when the system is designed for the actual room and storage arrangement. | Water may affect energized equipment; cabinet geometry can obstruct water from reaching the cell where failure began; hydraulic and drainage design must be coordinated with the data-center layout. | Strong baseline for lithium-ion UPS rooms, subject to the adopted code, listing or engineering criteria, and AHJ approval. |
| Clean-agent or other gaseous suppression | Can suppress visible flames quickly and may reduce direct water exposure to sensitive equipment in a suitably enclosed room. | Does not provide water’s cooling capacity and may not stop thermal runaway or ongoing flammable-gas production. It requires concentration hold time, ventilation and damper control, and safe re-entry procedures. | Supplementary protection or an approved alternative where the enclosure, agent, code pathway, and test evidence match the battery hazard. |
| Other approved alternative suppression | May be acceptable when a listed system or engineered design addresses the specific battery installation and its surrounding hazards. | “Alternative” does not mean automatically equivalent. The responsible engineer must document performance, limitations, and approval basis. | Only where the adopted code permits it and the AHJ accepts the supporting technical opinion, testing, or other approved substantiation. |
NFPA guidance reproduced in committee material states: “Water is considered the preferred agent for suppressing lithium-ion battery fires.” That sentence is guidance in the cited NFPA material, not a universal design approval. It reflects water’s cooling capability; it does not remove the need to verify cabinet access, drainage, electrical safety, and the complete protection scheme.
Why lithium-ion UPS rooms need more than flame extinguishment
A lithium-ion cell in thermal runaway can continue heating and generate flammable gases even after visible flames disappear. Dry chemicals, carbon dioxide, and inert gases can extinguish flame without removing enough heat to stop the underlying process. If cells remain hot, gases can continue to accumulate and another ignition can occur.
For that reason, a gaseous system must be evaluated as part of a controlled enclosure. The design needs a way to detect the event, stop or control ventilation as required, close dampers, maintain agent concentration for the specified hold period, and prevent unsafe re-entry. The room’s pressure-relief, exhaust, and gas-management strategy must be compatible with both normal operation and an emergency discharge.

A project method that produces an approvable design
- Identify the governing authority. Record the jurisdiction, adopted IFC edition, adopted NFPA editions, amendments, and any insurer or owner criteria. Obtain the AHJ’s interpretation before selecting an alternative to sprinklers.
- Inventory the battery hazard. Document chemistry, module and cabinet construction, manufacturer limits, nominal and maximum stored energy, number of cabinets, spacing, state-of-charge assumptions, and whether batteries are in racks, cabinets, or a separate enclosure. The label “battery room” is not enough information.
- Map the physical arrangement. Show room dimensions, ceiling height, obstructions, aisle widths, cabinet clearances, cable penetrations, doors, fire barriers, adjacent IT areas, and drainage routes. For water systems, verify that discharge can reach the relevant surfaces despite cabinet geometry.
- Classify the installation. Establish whether the space is an UPS room, an electrochemical ESS installation, an indoor battery-storage area, or another category under the adopted code. Do not apply an indoor-storage rule to a UPS room without confirming that the classifications match.
- Develop the suppression design basis. For sprinklers, document the applicable installation standard, hazard classification, discharge arrangement, water supply, and interaction with energized equipment. For gas, document enclosure integrity, agent concentration, hold time, ventilation shutdown, damper closure, pressure relief, discharge warning, and re-entry controls. For any alternative, identify the listing, engineering method, or test evidence that demonstrates suitability.
- Match evidence to the actual system. Use test results or technical reports that reflect the battery chemistry, cabinet geometry, energy, spacing, and room or enclosure being protected. A test on a different battery type or rack arrangement is not automatically transferable.
- Integrate detection and control logic. Coordinate early fire or thermal-event detection, alarms, battery-management signals where available, suppression release, equipment shutdown, ventilation commands, damper operation, and signals to the fire alarm system. Define which functions are automatic and which require trained operator action.
- Submit the complete package. Give the AHJ plans, calculations, equipment listings, technical opinion and report where required, test documentation, sequence of operations, emergency procedures, and maintenance plan. Approval should cover the room as a system rather than a suppression cylinder or sprinkler layout in isolation.
- Commission under realistic conditions. Verify alarm transmission, interlocks, shutdowns, damper positions, agent hold time or water-flow supervision, emergency power behavior, and operator notifications. Record deficiencies and obtain formal acceptance before placing the room in service.
Designing sprinkler protection for a data-center battery room
Sprinklers are attractive as a baseline because they continue to deliver cooling rather than merely removing visible flame. The design still has to account for the way batteries are installed. A cabinet, busway, or tightly packed rack can shield the cell that initiated the event. The engineer should therefore examine discharge coverage at cabinet faces, tops, aisles, and any areas where heat or burning material can spread.

The room may contain energized equipment, but concern about water damage does not by itself justify removing required fire protection. The accepted design should address both life safety and consequential damage, including how power is isolated and how responders manage a wet electrical environment.
When a clean-agent system is appropriate—and when it is not
A clean agent can be useful where preserving nearby electronics is important and the room can maintain the required concentration. It is most credible when the agent system is listed or engineered for the enclosure, the battery hazard has supporting test evidence, and the code expressly permits the approach.

- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
Do not specify a clean agent solely because a room is called a “battery room” or because the agent is marketed as residue-free. Confirm that the enclosure is tight enough for the hold period, that doors and penetrations are controlled, and that ventilation and dampers respond correctly. Establish a safe sequence for alarm, discharge, isolation, atmospheric testing, and re-entry. Personnel must not enter on the assumption that extinguished flames mean the batteries are cool or stable.
A gaseous system may be paired with sprinklers or another cooling strategy when the engineering analysis shows that flame control and thermal management require both. The combination must be designed as one coordinated system, with clear release logic and no conflicting shutdown commands.

Ventilation and gas management
Thermal runaway can produce flammable gases. Ventilation must therefore be analyzed for normal heat removal, emergency exhaust, gas accumulation, and interaction with a gaseous agent. A design that exhausts agent immediately may fail to achieve concentration; a design that traps gases without explosion controls may create a different hazard. NFPA 855’s scope specifically brings exhaust ventilation, gas detection, and explosion control into the same planning process.
Shutdown and isolation
Document how battery strings, chargers, UPS outputs, room HVAC, supply and return fans, dampers, and adjacent equipment respond to an alarm. Include manual isolation points for responders and define what remains energized to support life-safety systems.
Responder procedures
Provide the fire service with room plans, battery chemistry and energy information, disconnect locations, suppression type, ventilation controls, and re-entry restrictions. After a discharge, residual heat or gas can remain even when no flame is visible. Re-entry should follow the approved atmospheric, thermal, and electrical-safety procedure.
Common specification mistakes and corrections
- Treating a committee proposal as current code. A public NFPA committee report reproduces proposed text saying rooms containing lithium-ion battery UPS systems shall have automatic sprinklers installed in accordance with NFPA 1. That is committee material, not proof of the exact requirement in the currently issued NFPA 75 edition. Check the published standard and adopted local code.
- Using a model code as universal law. The 2024 IFC applies only where that edition or equivalent provisions have been adopted. Local amendments can change the result.
- Choosing an agent from the room name. Chemistry, energy, cabinet layout, separation, and enclosure conditions determine the hazard. Require a documented design basis.
- Assuming flame suppression equals thermal-runaway control. Require evidence that the design addresses cooling, propagation, gas generation, and re-ignition—not only flame disappearance.
- Copying density or settings from another project. Numerical criteria and system settings must come from the adopted standard, listed equipment, and project-specific documentation. There is no universal density or hold time that can be safely imported from an unrelated installation.
- Ignoring water consequences or drainage. Coordinate electrical isolation, drainage, cleanup, and business-continuity procedures while retaining the fire-protection performance required by the approved design.
- Leaving operations out of commissioning. A system that works on paper but sends no alarm, fails to close a damper, or cannot be safely reset is not ready for service.
Inspection, testing, and change control
Maintain the suppression, detection, ventilation, gas-management, and control equipment under the intervals and procedures required by the adopted standards and the equipment manufacturer. Keep records of water-flow or agent-system tests, alarm and interlock tests, enclosure integrity checks where applicable, battery-cabinet changes, software or control-logic changes, and corrective actions.
Reassess the design whenever battery chemistry, cabinet model, quantity, stored energy, room boundaries, ventilation, or UPS configuration changes. A room that was approved for one arrangement may no longer have the same hazard after a capacity expansion or cabinet replacement. Submit material changes to the AHJ before installation when the jurisdiction requires review.
Practical decision rule
For most lithium-ion UPS-room projects, begin by engineering an automatic sprinkler solution under the adopted code, then test whether a clean agent or another approved alternative can meet the same fire-control and thermal-management objectives without weakening code compliance. Accept an alternative only when its enclosure, controls, test evidence, and emergency procedures are demonstrably suited to the exact installation. Keep detection, ventilation, gas management, shutdown, and responder access in the same approval package.
