Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the third and final game in Square Enix’s remake trilogy, but the publisher has not confirmed eight specific ways it changes the 1997 PS1 story. What it has announced is a larger-scale finale built around Highwind airship travel, world exploration and evolved battles. Several often-cited changes—such as reordered locations and new synergy combat—belong to Rebirth, the second game, not Revelation.
What has Square Enix confirmed about Revelation?
Square Enix describes Final Fantasy VII Revelation as the third and final entry in the remake series, with a scheduled release date of April 8, 2027. Its official announcement names PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC, including Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC. The publisher’s high-level description points to three changes in how the finale is presented and played: a large-scale adventure, travel aboard the Highwind airship, and a vast world to explore alongside evolved battles. Those are broad design promises, not a detailed checklist of alterations to particular PS1 scenes, characters or plot events. The announcement does not enumerate eight distinct changes. Square Enix’s Revelation announcement is the primary source for those stated features.

Many concrete examples in coverage of the remake trilogy come from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second entry. A 2023 PlayStation interview with producer Yoshinori Kitase, creative director Tetsuya Nomura and director Naoki Hamaguchi discusses that game specifically. It says Rebirth adds synergy commands and abilities, skill trees, expanded exploration and more mini-games. It also changes the order of some locations and reaches the Forgotten Capital.

The interview gives additional Rebirth-only examples: Cloud leads and customizes a parade unit rather than sneaking into one, and Hamaguchi describes its world-map side content as nearly double the main-quest content. These details help explain how the trilogy is reimagining the original, but they are not confirmed features or statistics for Revelation.
PlayStation’s guide to the remake project describes it as a three-game reimagining of the 1997 classic by original creators. It notes that the narrative does not directly mirror the original and that key events have diverged in Remake and Rebirth. That establishes the project’s broad approach; it does not disclose the finale’s exact plot changes.

What does “changing from the original” mean for the story?
The confirmed framing is reimagining rather than scene-for-scene reproduction. That leaves room for changes to structure, presentation and events across the trilogy, but the available official material does not identify a complete set of Revelation story deviations from the PS1 game. In particular, the finale’s announcement is not enough to establish which original locations it visits, the order of events, or how individual character arcs resolve.
Hamaguchi’s comments offer a useful distinction between the overarching story and the way a scene is staged. In an interview reported by GamesRadar, the director said, “When it comes to the overarching story, I place my trust in what Kazushige Nojima writes and have no intention of altering that based on my judgment,” while noting that visual fidelity can make the original timing or passage of time feel implausible. He said the team may adjust event arrangement and pacing in response. These remarks describe his adaptation approach; they do not provide a list of Revelation plot changes.

What is known about editions and additional story content?
PlayStation’s announcement lists a Premium Edition with the game, a Story Expansion Pass and 24-hour early access. The pass is described as including two story-focused DLC packages, with further details to come. This is an announced edition configuration, not confirmation of the DLC stories’ content or a universal offer in every region. At this stage, the announced features establish the finale’s broad direction, not eight independently verified differences from the 1997 game. Square Enix has not used the cited material to specify Revelation’s detailed location sequence, combat mechanics, side-activity lineup or exact departures from the original’s plot. Treat future trailers as previews of what is shown, not proof of every feature or event in the full game.
