Short answer: Ventoy can boot ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD/VHDX and EFI image files from a USB drive whose main data partition uses FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, UDF, XFS, ext2/ext3/ext4 or, according to its current homepage, Btrfs. Ventoy defaults to exFAT. The Btrfs entry needs verification because Ventoy’s homepage and detailed layout and FAQ pages do not list exactly the same filesystems. XFS and ext2/ext3/ext4 are poor choices when the drive must work in Windows or install Windows.

Filesystem and image format are different things

Ventoy’s filesystem choice describes how files are stored on the USB drive’s large, user-data partition. An ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD/VHDX or EFI file is an image that Ventoy can load at boot. Changing the partition filesystem does not change the image format, and choosing an image extension does not determine the filesystem.

After Ventoy is installed, you normally copy image files to the drive rather than reformatting it for every new operating system. Ventoy presents a boot menu, searches the data partition for supported images and starts the selected one.

Main-partition filesystems Ventoy lists

Filesystem What the documentation establishes Best fit and cautions
exFAT Ventoy’s documented default for the main partition. General-purpose choice for USB use across Windows, Linux and macOS, according to Ventoy’s layout guidance.
FAT32 Listed as supported for the main partition. Useful for broad firmware and operating-system compatibility. Ventoy states that ISO files larger than 4 GB are supported; FAT32 should not be portrayed as preventing Ventoy from handling such ISOs.
NTFS Listed as supported. Practical when the drive is primarily handled by Windows.
UDF Listed as supported. An available alternative when a particular workflow or host system requires UDF.
XFS Listed in Ventoy’s detailed filesystem documentation. Ventoy warns that the USB becomes unavailable in Windows and is unsuitable for installing Windows from the drive.
ext2, ext3, ext4 Listed in the detailed documentation and FAQ. Useful mainly in Linux-oriented workflows; Ventoy gives the same Windows-availability and Windows-installation warning as for XFS.
Btrfs Included on the current Ventoy homepage, but absent from the retrieved detailed disk-layout and FAQ lists. Treat this as a documentation discrepancy. Confirm the current Ventoy documentation or installer options before relying on Btrfs.

exFAT: the normal starting point

Ventoy chooses exFAT by default and describes it as suitable for USB drives with compatibility across Windows, Linux and Mac. For a drive shared between several computers, this is the least surprising option unless a specific firmware, operating-system or administrative policy requires another filesystem.

FAT32 and the 4-GB misconception

Ventoy’s homepage explicitly says ISO files larger than 4 GB are supported. That statement means you should not claim that selecting FAT32 automatically prevents Ventoy from booting a large ISO. The available documentation does not state a maximum ISO size, so do not substitute an invented ceiling or imply that every large image is guaranteed to boot on every machine.

NTFS and UDF

NTFS and UDF are both listed as main-partition choices. NTFS is a natural fit when Windows is the principal host environment. UDF can be selected when a particular media workflow calls for it, but the documentation supplied here provides no performance comparison between filesystems. Choose for interoperability and operational requirements rather than an unsupported speed claim.

XFS and ext filesystems

Ventoy’s disk-layout guidance is explicit: XFS and ext2/ext3/ext4 make the USB unavailable in Windows and unsuitable for installing Windows from that drive. They can therefore make sense only when the drive will remain in a Linux-focused environment and will not be used for a Windows installation workflow.

The Btrfs documentation mismatch

The current homepage lists Btrfs, while the detailed disk-layout and FAQ pages retrieved for Ventoy list exFAT, FAT32, NTFS, UDF, XFS and ext2/ext3/ext4 without mentioning Btrfs. The omission does not prove that Btrfs is unsupported, but it does mean the pages are not internally consistent. If Btrfs is essential, check the current Ventoy documentation and the filesystem choices exposed by the version of the installer you are using.

How Ventoy partitions the USB drive

A standard Ventoy installation creates two partitions:

  • First, larger partition: the user-data area where you store ISO and other image files. Its filesystem is the choice discussed above.
  • Second partition: a FAT-based EFI System Partition containing Ventoy’s EFI boot files. This partition is separate from the data filesystem and is not where you normally place your images.

Installing Ventoy formats the USB drive and erases existing data. Back up anything important before installation. Once Ventoy is installed, later Ventoy updates are documented as preserving files on the first partition, and adding another operating-system image consists of copying the file to the drive.

Image formats Ventoy can boot

Image type How to use it Important qualification
ISO Copy the operating-system or utility ISO to the first partition and select it from Ventoy’s menu. Ventoy states that ISO files larger than 4 GB are supported. No maximum ISO size is stated in the supplied documentation.
WIM Copy a supported Windows Imaging Format file to the data partition. Boot behavior still depends on the image and computer firmware.
IMG Copy a disk or system image file and launch it from the menu. The extension alone does not guarantee that a particular image is bootable.
VHD/VHDX Copy a virtual hard-disk image and select it in Ventoy. Support covers the image type; the guest system and hardware still determine whether it starts successfully.
EFI Place an EFI executable where Ventoy can find it and select it. The EFI program must itself be appropriate for the target firmware and task.

Ventoy identifies operating-system families including Windows and WinPE, Linux, ChromeOS, Unix, VMware and Xen. The project’s vlnk documentation also gives examples involving .vhd, .vhdx, .vtoy Linux virtual disks, .efi files and .dat persistence files.

What vlnk and .dat mean

A vlnk file is a link that lets Ventoy boot an image stored on another disk. It is not a replacement for the image itself; it points Ventoy to that external location. The documentation also mentions .dat files for Linux persistence. A persistence .dat file is associated with its Linux ISO and must be on the same side as that ISO. Do not treat .dat as a general-purpose bootable image format.

Where to put images

Ventoy’s getting-started guidance allows image files anywhere on the first partition. It searches directories and subdirectories recursively, so you can organize files into folders such as Windows, Linux or Utilities without moving them to the root.

To prevent a folder and everything below it from appearing in Ventoy’s search, place a file named .ventoyignore in that directory. This is useful for archives, duplicate images or other material that should remain on the USB but should not clutter the boot menu.

Extension support is not a boot guarantee

Recognizing an extension means Ventoy knows how to present that type of file to its boot process. It does not guarantee that every image will boot on every computer. Firmware mode, Secure Boot configuration, the image’s bootloader, hardware drivers and image-specific assumptions can all affect the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ventoy says it has tested more than 1,400 image files and claims support for more than 90% of distributions listed by DistroWatch. Those are Ventoy project figures, not independent success rates and not promises for a particular ISO. The official site also maintains a tested-image list; consult it when a specific distribution or utility is important to your deployment.

Image-level compatibility markers

Ventoy documents a special way for an operating-system distribution to identify an ISO as Ventoy-compatible. The marker can be a ventoy.dat or VENTOY.DAT file in the ISO root, or the exact string VENTOY COMPATIBLE in the Primary Volume Descriptor’s Publisher, Preparer or Application field. These markers communicate compatibility information from the image creator; they do not override firmware limitations or guarantee successful booting in every environment.

Choosing a filesystem for your workflow

Choose exFAT for a mixed-computer USB

Use the default exFAT layout when the drive will move among Windows, Linux and macOS systems and you want a straightforward place to store multiple images.

Choose FAT32 when firmware interoperability is the priority

FAT32 is a listed option and can be appropriate for systems with conservative firmware or operating-system expectations. Ventoy’s explicit support for ISO files larger than 4 GB means you should evaluate the actual image and target hardware rather than rejecting FAT32 solely because of the ISO’s size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose NTFS for a Windows-centered environment

NTFS is sensible when Windows is the main system that will read and maintain the Ventoy drive. Confirm that the target firmware and deployment process accept the resulting boot path.

Choose XFS or ext only for a Linux-focused drive

These filesystems are listed, but Ventoy’s warning about Windows access and Windows installation is decisive. Do not select them for a USB that must be readable in Windows or used to install Windows.

Verify Btrfs before committing

Because the homepage and detailed pages disagree, verify Btrfs support for your Ventoy release before formatting a drive that depends on it. If you need predictable cross-platform behavior and have no Btrfs-specific requirement, exFAT avoids this documentation ambiguity.

Installation and first-use checklist

  1. Back up the USB drive; Ventoy installation erases its existing contents.
  2. Install the current Ventoy release and select the desired main-partition filesystem. The homepage showed Ventoy 1.1.17, dated July 24, 2026, at the time represented by the supplied material.
  3. Allow the installer to create the large data partition and the separate FAT-based EFI System Partition.
  4. Copy ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD/VHDX or EFI files to the first partition, in any folder structure you prefer.
  5. Safely eject the drive, boot the target computer from USB and choose an image from Ventoy’s menu.
  6. If an image is not listed, check its extension, location and whether a parent directory contains .ventoyignore.

Ventoy’s FAQ also states that when reformatting the first partition, the cluster-size value should be at least 2048. The supplied documentation does not define the unit for that value, so retain the installer’s stated value rather than converting it or adding an unsupported unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The image does not appear in the menu

  • Confirm that the file is on the first, larger partition rather than the EFI partition.
  • Check that the extension is one Ventoy documents: ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD/VHDX or EFI.
  • Look for a .ventoyignore file in the image’s directory or an ancestor directory.
  • Reconnect the drive and allow Ventoy to rescan after copying.

The image appears but will not boot

  • Try the image on the target computer in the firmware mode it expects, such as UEFI or legacy mode.
  • Check the tested-image information and the image publisher’s requirements.
  • Consider whether Secure Boot, unusual hardware, persistence configuration or an image-specific bootloader is involved.
  • Do not infer that changing from exFAT to another filesystem will fix an image whose bootloader or firmware is incompatible.

Windows cannot read the USB

If the main partition uses XFS or ext2/ext3/ext4, this is consistent with Ventoy’s documented warning. Reinstall or reformat with exFAT, FAT32 or NTFS after backing up the drive, depending on the interoperability you need.

Release context and limits of the claims

The homepage state represented here identifies Ventoy 1.1.17 as released July 24, 2026. Filesystem lists and compatibility behavior can change between releases, so use the documentation and installer for the version you actually deploy. The figures of 1,400-plus tested images and more than 90% of DistroWatch distributions are project statements, not independently audited measurements. Ventoy supports many image types and filesystems, but no extension list can promise universal boot success across all firmware, hardware and image builds.

The Bottom Line

For most users, leave Ventoy’s main partition at exFAT and copy ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD/VHDX or EFI files to it. Use FAT32 or NTFS when your host or firmware requires them, reserve XFS and ext2/ext3/ext4 for Linux-only workflows, and verify Btrfs support against the current documentation because Ventoy’s published lists differ.
