What Filament Is Safest for 3D-Printed Parts Inside a PC?

There is no single safest filament for every part inside a personal computer. For a functional part near electronics, start with a product that has a documented flame rating—such as a PC-FR grade—then verify its heat-deflection data, mechanical performance, printer requirements and the temperature measured at the actual mounting point. UL-certified PETG V0 and PC-ABS FR are documented alternatives. Ordinary PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA or polycarbonate should not be treated as flame-retardant merely because of the polymer name.

This article assumes “PC” means a desktop computer and that you are printing a component installed inside its case, not a complete computer enclosure. The reviewed sources do not test a printed part inside an operating computer, so no product below is a blanket guarantee for every geometry or installation.

What “safe” has to mean inside a computer

A part in a computer case can fail in several different ways. A material may resist ignition yet soften under a sustained temperature, or remain rigid while burning readily. A strong bracket can still short a contact if its fit is poor. Printing can expose you to particles and volatile compounds even when the finished part is inert. Treat safety as a set of separate checks rather than a single filament label.

  • Flame behavior: Look for a named test and rating, such as UL 94 V-0, and read whether it applies to the exact product and specimen thickness.
  • Thermal stability: Compare heat-deflection temperature (HDT) and its test load with the temperature measured where the part will sit. Flame rating does not tell you how much a part will sag.
  • Mechanical function: A cable comb, fan duct, sensor mount and load-bearing bracket have different strength, impact and creep requirements.
  • Electrical clearance: Keep the part away from exposed contacts and connectors unless its dimensions and insulating properties have been reviewed. Do not assume a filled material is electrically insulating.
  • Airflow and installation: A part must not touch a fan, block a vent or trap heat around a component.
  • Print-process exposure: Follow the filament’s safety data sheet (SDS), drying instructions and ventilation guidance. These controls concern printing, not a claim that the finished part is toxic.

A rating on a filament specimen also does not certify every printed wall thickness, orientation, infill pattern or finished assembly. Certification scope is part of the selection.

Best starting point: a specifically documented flame-retardant grade

If a part is close to a power supply, voltage-regulation components, connectors or other heat sources, begin with a product whose manufacturer publishes a flame rating for that named material. A PC-FR formulation is one example. “FR” is not enough by itself: obtain the current product data and certificate, confirm the test standard, and check whether the rating covers the thickness and color you intend to print.

The following products have product-specific evidence in the reviewed material. They are examples for comparison, not universal endorsements.

Product Documented evidence Limitations and checks
ELEGOO PC-FR Manufacturer states certification to UL 94-2023 V-0 and describes the material for electronics and mechanical applications. The manufacturer calls for an enclosed printer, recommends drying and specifies a hardened-steel nozzle of 0.4 mm or larger. Verify the exact certificate and datasheet scope. The reviewed page does not establish an HDT value.
Prusament PETG V0 Prusa says both colors achieved UL 94 V0 in testing under IEC 60695-11-10 and describes the product for electronic housings and insulation parts. PETG is hygroscopic. Prusa recommends drying for six hours at 55°C when the spool cannot be kept dry. Confirm the current print profile and certification scope.
UltiMaker Method PC-ABS FR UltiMaker identifies a UL-94 V0 rating and reports heat deflection of 104°C. This is a Method-series material. Check printer compatibility and the test conditions behind the 104°C figure before applying it to your part.
FormFutura Premium PETG Flame Retardant The technical data sheet issued January 15, 2025 reports UL 94 V0-equivalent testing and HDT B of 63°C at 0.45 MPa. The manufacturer explicitly says it is not certified by Underwriters Laboratories and has no UL number. Describe it as equivalent laboratory testing, not UL certification.

The numbers in this table are product- and test-specific. They are not a universal temperature limit for a computer or a prediction of failure in a particular case.

How to choose between the documented options

1. Measure the actual installation temperature

Identify the exact mounting point, install the computer as it is normally used, and measure that location during realistic sustained workloads. Short idle readings are not enough. Record the highest sustained temperature and consider heat from nearby components, restricted airflow and long-term creep. No reviewed source publishes a universal “safe PC temperature” for a printed part, so the measurement must be compared with the exact filament’s datasheet rather than a generic polymer chart.

2. Match the thermal data to the load

HDT is measured under a specified mechanical load. FormFutura’s 63°C value is HDT B at 0.45 MPa; it should not be read as “the part is safe to 63°C” under every load. UltiMaker’s 104°C figure likewise depends on its stated test method and specimen. If your part is lightly loaded and well supported, the result may be useful as a screening value; a cantilevered bracket under constant force needs a larger margin and a design review.

3. Confirm the mechanical job

Use a material with adequate toughness for clips and mounts that are assembled repeatedly. Check layer adhesion and orientation for brackets: a flame rating does not prevent splitting along layer lines. For a fan duct, preserve smooth airflow and clearance from moving blades. For a cable comb, avoid sharp edges that can cut insulation. For a sensor mount, prevent vibration from loosening the fastener. These design decisions can matter as much as the resin family.

SUNLU PETG Filament 1.75mm,1kg,Black
  • ①【PETG Filament 1.75mm】SUNLU PETG 3D Printer Filament combines the advantages of both PLA and ABS 3D printer filament, making 3D printing more convenient and easy.
  • ②【Excellent Layer Adhesion】PETG filament offers excellent layer adhesion, reducing the risks of warping and ensuring smooth, strong prints with great structural integrity.

  • ⑤【Robust Durability】PETG prints are robust and maintain their properties over time, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications where weather resistance is a necessity.

4. Verify printer and post-processing requirements

High-temperature or filled formulations may require an enclosure, a heated bed, a hardened nozzle and a drybox or dryer. ELEGOO’s PC-FR guidance specifically calls for an enclosed printer, drying and a hardened-steel nozzle at least 0.4 mm. Prusament PETG V0 requires moisture control; Prusa’s guidance is six hours at 55°C when the spool cannot remain dry. Follow the current instructions for your printer, because an under-heated chamber or wet filament can produce weak layers even when the raw material is rated.

5. Read the SDS before printing

UL 200B, dated May 8, 2023, discusses particle and VOC emissions from material-extrusion printing and directs users to the particular material’s SDS. Flame-retardant additives vary, and some may present health hazards. Use the ventilation, temperature and personal-protection measures specified by the manufacturer. Do not infer that a flame-retardant label eliminates emissions during printing.

What the flame ratings actually tell you

UL 94 V-0 is a flammability classification obtained under a defined test procedure. Prusa reports that PETG V0 achieved V0 for both colors after testing under IEC 60695-11-10. ELEGOO states a UL 94-2023 V-0 certification claim for its PC-FR. FormFutura reports a V0-equivalent result but explicitly distinguishes that laboratory test from certification by Underwriters Laboratories. Those descriptions are not interchangeable.

Ask the seller or manufacturer for four details:

  1. The exact product name, formulation and color covered by the report.
  2. The standard and edition used for the test.
  3. The specimen thickness and whether the rating applies to molded material, printed specimens or both.
  4. Any conditions, limitations or certificate number that define the rating’s scope.

A V-0 result does not mean a part cannot ignite, melt or transfer heat. It describes behavior in the specified test. Geometry, wall thickness, print orientation, infill and contamination can change the behavior of a finished part.

Why ordinary PLA and PETG are not automatic answers

PLA and ordinary PETG are often easier to print than engineering-grade FR materials, but printability is not evidence of suitability inside a computer. Prusa’s general filament guide provides family-level printing conditions; it does not give every commercial spool the same flame or heat performance. A product-specific datasheet can differ substantially from a family assumption.

FormFutura’s PETG Flame Retardant sheet illustrates the point: it reports HDT B of 63°C at 0.45 MPa and an equivalent V0 test, while another PETG product may have different thermal and flame data. Likewise, do not assume ordinary ABS, ASA or polycarbonate has a particular fire rating without documentation for the exact spool. If the part is only a cool, lightly loaded cable organizer, a conventional material may be adequate after a temperature and clearance review; that is a design decision, not proof that the material is intrinsically safe.

Installation checks before powering the computer

  1. Dry-fit the printed part with the computer off and unplugged. Confirm that it cannot fall into a fan or contact a circuit board if a fastener loosens.
  2. Check clearances. Keep insulating parts from exposed contacts, solder joints and connector openings unless the design specifically requires proximity and has been reviewed.
  3. Preserve airflow. Do not narrow fan inlets, outlets or heatsink channels. Watch for cable routing that could pull the part into a blade.
  4. Inspect the print. Reject pieces with delamination, voids at screw bosses, crushed layers or sharp burrs that could damage wires.
  5. Secure without over-stressing the plastic. Use appropriate washers or inserts where needed; excessive screw torque can crack even a strong filament.
  6. Recheck after a heat cycle. After sustained operation, power down and inspect for softening, warping, discoloration, odor or movement. If any appears, remove the part and reassess the material, geometry and temperature margin.

Special cases and materials to treat cautiously

Parts near a power supply or hot VRM

Use the most thoroughly documented FR option your printer can process, measure the local temperature and provide generous thermal and electrical clearance. Do not rely on a generic “high-temperature” claim without an HDT test load.

Electrical insulation or ESD-sensitive locations

Obtain material-specific electrical data and involve a qualified design review when insulation, creepage, clearance or ESD behavior matters. The reviewed sources do not establish that carbon-fiber-filled filament is electrically insulating, so do not assume it is suitable near exposed contacts.

Light-duty cable management

For a low-temperature cable comb or tie mount, mechanical fit and abrasion control may dominate. Even then, verify temperature, keep the part away from fans and avoid blocking ventilation. A flame rating remains useful when the part is close to a heat source.

A practical decision checklist

  • Have you confirmed that “PC” means a personal-computer case and identified the exact location?
  • Have you measured the location during realistic sustained use?
  • Does the exact product datasheet state a flame test or certification, with scope and thickness?
  • Do the HDT value and test load leave a margin above the measured temperature and sustained mechanical load?
  • Can your printer meet the enclosure, nozzle, bed and drying requirements?
  • Have you read the SDS and arranged suitable ventilation?
  • Will the geometry preserve fan clearance, electrical spacing and cable insulation?
  • Have you inspected the printed part and rechecked it after a heat cycle?

Bottom line: select the documented product, not the polymer name

For a functional part inside a desktop computer, a specifically documented flame-retardant filament is the most defensible starting point. PC-FR, Prusament PETG V0 and Method PC-ABS FR provide different combinations of flame and thermal evidence; FormFutura’s PETG Flame Retardant adds a V0-equivalent result but is not UL-certified. Choose only after matching the exact datasheet to the measured temperature, mechanical duty, printer capability and installation clearances. No filament label alone certifies a printed part in every PC.
